Can someone tell me the common word for neighborhood mom & pop shops that sell beer, snacks, etc.? I have usually called them ร้านชำ (ran cham) but I think that may be incorrect. Is it ร้านค้า (ran ka)?? I always think of ร้านค้า as being bigger stores.

    Thanks!

ร้านชำ is correct short from ร้านขายของชำ grocery store

another widely understood loneword from Taechew Chinese is โชห่วย sometimes misspelled as โชว์ห่วย

    ร้านค้า is just unspecified shops

it's possible that the problem with finding the right adjective is because there would be a different set of adjectives for people vs. cities.  In English of course sleazy can be used for both.

I have no idea what the word is, but I think it is pretty common in Thai to refer to 'sleazy' places as having "พวกมาเฟีย".    At least that is how I would approach the conversation.

I think the meaning is pretty clear that you think Pattaya is a sleazy place if it is full of  a 'bunch of gangs.'  The sleazyness comes from the gangs, who prey, con, rip off, pimp, etc.

เถื่อน literally wild is used in this context

    พัทยาเป็นเมืองเถื่อน

    here's a scene from a Thai movie that's become a meme

I avoid it so much I don't even know how nasty it is.

Isn't that the stuff they use at those banana roti stands and to slop on perfectly good fresh corn kernels?

The stuff on roti stands are supposed to be Indian Ghee, but most of the vendors are burmese/rohingyas and not indians

I've been told some advanced safety gear has not been included to keep the price down. They are taking orders at the show, but I'd like to see some test drives and reviews first. It uses expensive suspension - and I'd imagine costly to replace when out of warranty. The thing is 150mm wider than a stock ranger which would make it a bugger to drive in small sois.

I've seen some on test out here in Rayong with rear drum brakes, hopefully that's not for Thai market. The only thing that's missing compared to the 3.2 Wildtracks seems to be radar cruise control and lane departure

  5. 1.7M, the only thing missing is radar cruise control and lane departure warning that's been in both Ranger Wildtrack and top end Everest, not a deal breaker but hopefully that'll be in the revision to soften the eventual price increase.

Also good to see the locking tailgate that has disappeared from the Wildtrack in the model change

Considering that this'll be a 'toy' for the well off, the alternatives are Fortuners and Everest that's already around this price point anyway

  6. another word that's a bit more emotional is จัญไร

literally it's the opposite of auspicious

but when used to describe people it takes on the meaning more of an '<deleted>'

there'll probably never be a 1:1 translation that fits perfectly, the point of having a broad vocabulary is that you can select what's appropriate according to context

  7. another good word to describe 'improper' place is อโคจร

โคจร is orbit, with อ as *anti- * infront

used in the monkhood to describe places that monks shouldn't visit, bars, womens, entertainment etc.

    พัทยาเป็นเมืองอโคจร

  8. Eastern Bicycle (Ch. Numchai) On Sukhumvit in Naklua (North of Bangkok Hospital) is good, the have stock of 'cheap' old bicycle as well as expensive new ones in air conditioned room

SV Bike is not bad, only that the lady owner has resting b*tch face, otherwise quite cordial

If you don't need relationship with the local bike shop, service or return visit for things, Decathlon in Tesco North Pattaya has some good bikes, way better than LA or Thai brand in Supermarkets

  9. It used to be that local governments handled the vaccinations with free vaccinations, but a couple of years back the anti corruption commission ruled that purchasing of vaccines and giving them out is not the job of local governments, and although the case was overruled local governments are still afraid of touching anything vaccines should there be legal repercussion, so now the disease spreads

  10. They're legit, the nice, auspicious numbers are reserved and sold at Land Transport office's auction, There are re sellers that sell them

Each province gets their own pretty picture too

how much do you think typical one cost and how much are you willing to pay for one?

  11. The guy with the radar gun could have turn their neck to read you numberplate, but more likely they'd only need to radio in to the checkpoint that the guy on a 'big bike' and then you were pulled over.

That spot in Sriracha is fixed, there's couple of guys in the middle of the road under some umbrella less than a Km before the checkpoint

There's no traffic court in Thailand so good luck trying to dispute that it's your words against the policeman's

  12. Just went to Central Festival after a couple months away...

The San Dominico Italian Restaurant (Pan Pan) is now gone, both the restaurant and the gelato/cake stall out near the escalator

The hoarding now say Pepper Lunch is coming in March

Pepper lunch is a chain restaurant that has meal coming on a hot plate, usually a steak or meat and some rice. They were in Central Festival when the mall first opened all those years ago and left within months of opening due to lack of customers. The first couple of years at Central see many Japanese chains pack up: There's Mos Burger and Japanese Curry only restaurant the comes to mind.

will the independent non-chain/non tourist trap restaurant struggle to survive in Central?
