  1. I would say its worth it, I have a little girl, who has two passports Thai and British and a British birth cert my reasons for doing this were.(1) If no birth lines then she cannot get a passport so by law she is not British. So when we go and visit family and friends back home we have to go through the visa process for her which as you know can be quite costly. (Correct me if my thinking is wrong) (2) Also information received is that you have to register the birth within a year.(3) My long term plans were never to remain in Thailand so my Daughter gets free education when we go back home. So I think it better to do than not to do, gives her more choices.

By law your child will be British by birth right. That is if you are British (with British birth certificate) then your child will acquire British nationality as soon as they are born. This is why the British Embassy does not insist that you register the birth in order for your child to obtain a British passport or British citizenship.I am not sure what you mean by" birth lines" but anyone who is British can obtain a British passport for their child without that child having a British birth certificate. What is important is that you prove you are British showing the original long version of your British birth certificate together with your babies’ Thai birth certificate and an official translated copy. As far as I am aware at present there is no time limit on registering a birth and I can do this at a later date. In fact this is what I intend doing if someone can convince me it is a worth while thing to do. I certainly do not intend to part with my hard earned cash without good reason...even the British embassy couldn’t come up with a convincing argument when I questioned them about this personally at the embassy. The reason given on their web site is also very generalized and without much substance or detail.

    Here it is:-

Birth registration is not compulsory, but we recommend it. The advantages are that

    • A British style birth certificate is available as proof of identity and proof of nationality.

    • A record of the birth will afterwards be held at the General Register Office in the United Kingdom. In the future, copies can be obtained from the General Register Office.

Well we can see that they recommend it (well who wouldn’t at nearly 15,000 THB) and it is proof of identity (as is a Thai birth certificate) and Nationality (as is a British passport which your baby can attain anyway) and you can obtain a copy in the future if you lose it….but the important thing is why and when will my daughter require it? The only time I recall being asked for my birth certificate was for my very first passport (which my daughter has used her Thai birth certificate for) and right now to prove that I am British in order that my daughter can obtain her British citizenship and passport.

It's nice to know that someone else has looked at this and come to the same conclusion as myself. However maybe we are wrong and there are some compelling reasons to register the birth....any more input anyone?

To support your wifes' application for UK visa?

  2. Okay, last year went down to Singapore with the copy of the marriage certificate and a statement showing 400,000 in the bank and got the one-year multiple entry 'O' no problem.

    Visa finishes end of April.

As it seems the regulations are the same, the question is:

Is there any issues with getting a second one-year multiple 'O' from this embassy (or any for that matter)?

Maybe I'm missing something here but why not get a one year extension to your visa at Suan Phlu? no need to go out of country, save money!

  3. I think that we all are feeling the pinch from both sides, local inflation and the too strong baht [especially the $].

I've implimented some changes in my lifestyle to compensate for the lower value of my $$'s.

Like, only going into the superstores once a week instead of 2x or 3x a week. I've taught my [amazing Thai] wife to actually make lists to make sure we stock up on essentials for a week and and an added bonus is that we do less impulse spending [which is a big bite out of the budget].

We also shop more in the local markets for fresher vegetables and meats and support local merchants.

Skipping an upgrade for my pc, drinking cheaper wine, no vacation this year...maybe some day trips near by.

But, so far still living a good life!!

    What compensations are others making???

Get the TW to work harder?

  4. This post about mobiles on planes

4 quotes of the same thing for no reason in the first few replies,

no highlighting nothing other than taking up bandwidth :o

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...=175863&hl=

    Many others.

Can/has there been a notice to all to use that feature for a specific reason?

    Rant rant ting away :D

    yep Tottally agree!! :D

I don't. But it will be interesting to see how long multiple quotes will go for on this thread. For me its not a good multiple quoting thread if you don't hold the down scroll key for less than 7 secs

Yep, it bugs me too. :D

because it makes other people so happy!

    This is getting silly now

    What is?

I am unsure, but happy to add some pleasure to the OP's life!

Ah, I get it, you mean quoting lengthy posts for no reason. Yes, agreed, ridiculous behaviour. I'd never do a thing like that...

Waay too much time on our hands!! but keep going this could end up like the three word story.

  5. I have been offered a cheap "barn"/house in rural Khon Khaen, about a 40 min drive to a village, large piece of land with 1 small village type house and a derelict village house.

    Land is very large.

I can buy the "barn" for 20,000 baht from my BF.

Catch is that there is a squatter inside he cant get out.

He left the "barn/house and a neighbour moved in and apparently wont leave so he said he will have to pay him to leave of 100,000 baht,i said i will give him a lessser amount thinking i have a bargain then tell the guy living there to Poq.

However is there any benefit to me owning just the small barn.

Its not like i want to live there.

Its not a good investment is it?

Should i take a lease on the land too?

How do I get rid of the squatter?

    GTF Away

  6. My baby daughter was playing with the Santa clauses on the front window today which made me think, "my God, I've turned Thai!". We still have the gold-coloured Happy New Year across the top of the door too. Obviously it doesn't bother the wife(being Thai), and it doesn't bother me - leave it there til next year.

Also, when going to wok the other day, I felt nothing wrong with stopping at a motorbike and looking at myself in the wing mirror and even though I have short hair, patting it all down :o

Have you turned Thai - how?

    I pick my nose....anyware.

  7. Guys: As posted today all the ADSL speed tests are dated from year 2006!! I'm looking for year 2008 tests for ISPs' in Bangkapi and Khlong Tan. Can anyone advise the current best value broadband ISPs' for these areas?

    Cheers

  8. Is there any good diner in Bangkok?

Ole American style, breakfast and burgers?

    I hope there is.

I am moving to Bangkok in July and I am gonna miss Sunday brunch.

And really thick juicy cheese burger.

The Madrid on Patpong Road, opens 0600-0200

Country sausage, homefries, SOS they do it all.

  9. I would be grateful if anyone could recommend a good hair salon in Bangkok for highlights on blonde hair and a cut. I have had many bad experiences here where the stylists think that putting big chunks of bleach on hair and leaving it all on for the same time is a good idea! There must be one place in Thailand that knows how to do it properly!

    Thanks. :o

Magnolia Spa, Sukhumvit 71 corner of Sub Soi (Pridi Banomyong) 33. Full salon and Spa services.

  10. I know there's a couple of threads running in the General Section about rats - but they deal with extermination. I was forwarded this email by a friend of mine which I will share. I am just wondering how true it is (urban myth or otherwise) as I have seen lots of rats in Thailand, many in convenience stores in Bangkok and along the riverfront.

A stock clerk was sent to clean up a storeroom in Maui, Hawaii.

When he got back, he was complaining that the storeroom was really filthy and that he had noticed dried mouse/rat droppings in some areas. A couple of days later, he started to feel like he was coming down with a stomach flu, complained of sore joints and headaches, and began to vomit.

He went to bed and never really got up again. Within two days he was severely ill and weak. His blood sugar count was down to 66, and his face and eyeballs were yellow. He was rushed to the emergency at Pali-Momi, where he was diagnosed to be suffering from massive organ failure. He died shortly before midnight.

No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat/mouse droppings at anytime. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus) that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings.

Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly .

An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the doctor's suspicions...

This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on.

Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents.

Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans.

The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, super store has rats and mice. And their warehouse most assuredly does!

Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw.

The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned.

  11. I've been a customer of CAT Telecom (Chiang Mai) for about 1 year and a half. Always had good connections, now it's been a week and I'm experiencing about 7-15% packet loss when I reach a certain hop in Bangkok and I use to regularly ping one of my server in Las Vegas at about 230ms, not it's occiliating between 500ms to 800ms.

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing such problems and/or might have a clue to what's going on. By the way, I live just next to the ADSL exchange point, and I have 4mbps/1mbps (CAT HiNet) connection.

Could it be the sub-sea fiber cable damage off India and in the Mediterranean Sea?

  12. Buttons. :D

    Yes, Buttons. :D

Does anyone know where I can buy buttons in Pattaya?

My wife and I have looked, but can't find any.

She says she will buy some next time she goes to Sa Kaeo - but that's ridiclous! There must be buttons for sale in Pattaya.

    Surely? :o

    Check with a tailor shop

  13. I can probably communicate my needs in Thai at least basically, I can have a friend stick close to the phone in case further elaboration is needed :o . Makes sense about the delivery guys at the malls, there's a Carrefour and HomePro near here, I could check there for willing parties.

    What's a "baht bus"?

    Thanks for your thoughts!

A baht bus is a passenger pickup running Moobaans and Sois

Try to get to Carrefour or Homepro etc.

  14. Hey, if anybody's got any suggestions on how to find this particular service It'd be a HUGE help.

    I need to move:

    1 suitcase

    1 box

    1 bicycle

    2 small tables

    4 chairs

From Pak Kret (20 minutes north of Chatuchak) to a storage facility in Khet Suan Luang (not so far from Khlong Toey BTS station).

Ideally if I could hire a guy with a pick up truck for say an hour and a half at the MOST I'd be good to go. Even an SUV or a Van, I don't really care, but I'm trying to keep the cost below 2000THB. I can load and unload the stuff myself it's just a matter of getting it from A to B. I got a quote from a moving company and it was 4500, which seems like a lot considering the small amount of goods and the small amount of time required.

Anybody got any ideas? I suppose I could start randomly making offers to sawng tao drivers.... :o Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

    Cheers

Unless you speak Thai I think you need a Thai friend to help with this, there are loads of pickups parked on roadsides near malls/stores with a board showing for hire with phone number to call. I think you can do this for a few hundred baht not thousands.

  15. I need to find a decent Dentist in the Silom/Sathorn area for a reasonable amount of work (need my fang's cleaning and sharpening)

I need someone who speaks reasonable English, as my Thai isn't good enough to explain what i want/need doing. Also someone who's reasonably priced, whilst i don't mind paying good money for good work, i don't want to be given a silly bill at the end of it all. Preferably someone who will accept appointments out of hours (around 6pm onwards) - I think I'm going to need a root canal and a crown (but i will let the dentist advise me on that), and I'm a big baby when it comes to dentists and needles, so also someone with a good 'bedside' manner

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks in Advance

    The toothless one

Panthip Dental Clinic 02-236-5002 on Patpong Rd. Khun Panthip is a world class dentist. You will need to schedule an appointment as she is very popular, fluent English speaking and reasonably priced.

The root canal and crown she did for me was 11,000Baht
