E20 is staying that's why wondered how or if my Versys could be modified to run on it.

You would need to increase fuel delivery to give equal power, as E20 has lower calories than straight Gasoline or E10. And would need a ECM able to adjust to the increased fuel load to the injectors, as well as moniter timing and temperature. For sure it is doable. Drag cars in some classes  have run on straight mehanol for years. Question is - is it economically feasible ?

  2. "Lifestyle" has nothing to do with it. Had cars start to turn into my lane until they heard the pipes, then stayed put. What I ride, what I wear, has sweet FA to do with it. Look at Me ? Damn Right ! Look at me and don't run me over. I have 6 bikes in LOS. Only the HD has loud pipes. Can I see a difference ? Yes. And when I ride my Dyna I do not wear a leather vest, wife beater, and jeans. I wear a mesh, armoured jacket, armoured pants, AStar boots and gloves. So do not make assumptions based on what a person rides as to what their "Lifestyle is" If you saw me at a PTT station you would have no clue what type of bike I ride as I wear the same gear to ride them all. Blanket statements ar always wrong.

  3. An article concerning whether automobile and truck drivers can hear quiet motorcycles under various circumstances, including when the bike is right next to the car (spoiler: they can't) -- http://www.bikernet.com/pages/Bikernet_Independent_Motorcycle_Noise_Study.aspx

An article discussing how the Oakland CA police department retrofitted loud exhaust to all their motorcycles, in clear violation of the law, owing to safety concerns. "Kozinski cited an accident three months ago in which an Oakland officer riding a toned-down cycle was struck by a motorist who said he hadn't heard the officer approaching." http://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Oakland-PD-s-Harleys-have-a-new-roar-3281220.php

It has been said many times, first heard it in my late teens "Loud Pipes Save Lives" Nice to see some documented backup. Us HD riders have known this for years. It has saved by behind more than once. But even being heard is no excuse for not using your mirrors, and a shoulder check into your blind spot, before executing a turn.Bigger problem is people do not know how to drive, or ride. This is at the heart of the matter.

  4. I doubt that any oil is leaking up thru the injector. Probably just a little bit of spill when changing oil. As a plastic cover hides it all, a small bit got under the cover, and the oil attracted the dirt. If clean now, keep an eye on it, but if I had to predict I would say no.

  5. In your pic - the steel line contains the diesel fuel. The electric wire opens the fuel injector, on signal from the ECU, pulse width depending on signals received from the various sensors. Both connected to the fuel injector.

Black smoke is caused by unburnt fuel. Causes can be a dirty air filter, dirty injectors, defective MAF sensor, or others.

Always a good idea to use diesel fuel conditioner from new. Keeps injectors, intake valves, manifolds clean. Same applies to FI gasoline engines.

  6. Gotta laugh at some of the opinions here. As if Ducati are some sort of mythical motorcycle brand. Styling - to each their own. But at the end of the day - it is nothing more than a machine. And if the machine does not work - what use is it ? A bike you have to always wait to have repaired is not a bike, it is a pile of plastic, steel and rubber. Go to any landfill and see the same thing.

  7. In most Canadian provinces and Territories it is called the Distracted Driving Law. Covers cell fone use, and anything which draws your attention away from safely driving the car falls under this broad law. Can cover eating, applying makeup, texting, whatever. Many US states also have similar laws on the books.

  8. Only way self driving cars will ever work is to adopt the same tech used in aircraft. A transponder to ID each and every vehicle on the road, its position and its relative position to every other vehicle on the road. This exempts pedestrians, who whould not be on the same road as vehicles anyway. Or people on bicycles. And - the complex interactive technology to track all those vehicles. Doable - yes. But who would want to pay for it ? Anything else is a pipe dream. Cars been on the road for over 100 years and some people still can not drive. How long do you think a new tech will take people to understand ? Not in my lifetime.

  9. If you have a carb bike, and it is hard to start, the fault is not just because it has a carb. Maybe it is dirty. Spark plug bad. Timing off. Owned many, many carb bikes. My HD sat in a steel crate for almost 7 years, drained the fuel, poured in fresh, installed a new battery, and it fired right up. That being said FI will use less fuel, compensate (within limits) for temp and altitude changes, and may give better throttle response. Learn how to set up a carb, and points for that matter, and starting cold is a 2 kick event, hot one kick.

  10. Whatever is destroying your seat, for whatever reason they are attracted to it. Smell ? Salt from Sweat ? Try mothballs - place in a bag, lay on seat. Many animals do not like the scent, and will quickly vacate the premesis. Works under hood, under dash, under seats in cars too.

  11. Is the bike still on warranty ? If not, any independant dealer worth anything would set you up with any spares you need. With air freight the most remote places are only a couple of days away. Don't know how Laos customs works for duty, but the problem is not insurmountable, Find a dealer, order the parts, on the bird, zoom, VTE soon. 2 months is horse manure. Lived in many remote places, a good dealer is worth their weight in gold. No matter where he is located.

  12. Todays helmets are miles ahead of the ones in years gone by. I rode over a 40 foot cliff, broke left leg in three places, and split my fibreglass helmet right down the middle, from brow to neck. Only the liner kept it on my head. No injury, no bruise, nada. So a discussion about todays helmets, all well and good, but you can not go wrong with any mid priced model. Get the features you want, at a realistic price. No need for a 800 buck helmet when a 200 buck one is just as good.

  13. Had a Class One license since 1974. Bigest problem I have seen on tractor trailers here in LOS is the lack of a Jake Brake. Go down any steep hill and you travel over washboard road caused by trucks applying the brakes, which reduces wheel speed, and causes the hot asphalt to be pushed forward in front of the tire, making a little bump. Repeat. The large trucking outfits I have encountered in 15 years driving here are professional, courteous, and considerate. At least you know what they will do. Look at the condition of the rig, and you can pretty much tell what shape the truck is in. If they will not fix the little things, no hope for them having any sort of preventive maintenance schedule. But it all comes down to how you drive. And if your actions are not enough, bad luck. Stuff Happens.

  14. A new cap would not hurt, but judging by the symptoms I think the rad is just undersized. Altho if the water pump impeller is old, and the vanes are not close to the pump body, it will turn alright, but will not pump much water. Me, I would look at a larger rad, and when it is changed also change the pump. New cap for a new rad is a given. Along with all the hoses and thermostat
