I have never read any of the DTA's with any of the countries except that of the USA since that is the one affecting me but I clearly understand where my government stands of govt pensions, social security as it is clearly spelled out in the the DTA. From listening to others on this forum, I don't think that their country's DTA has been as specifically spelled out as that of the US. Hopefully we will all learn in the near future just how few of us will be affected (if at all) with the new interfpretation. Good luck to all!

While I agree that some ex-pats may be affected in some ways, this article seems to have been prepared by the tax agents. I also agree that expats must be aware of their own tax situation in regards to the DTA with Thailand and their home country if there is one. But this article seems to me that this new interpretation is aimed at the expats when in effect, it is most likely too, to affect Thais that have avoided paying taxes on current year earnings as previously they were following tax law that they could hold those funds until the following year without having to pay taxes. I also think that if one does have convoluted income(s) that a tax agent may well be needed. Fortunately we have had several dedicated forum members that have done a tremendous amount of searches on this issue and have shared their findings, theories, and recommended that expats not worry until the final information from the Thai government is published. Have you googled the Board of Investment Long Term Visa? there are 4 categories - I retired here 20 years ago on a Retirement O and did the yearly extension of stay, 90-day reports etc...but then I read about the LTR, I qualified for the wealthy pensioner and the qualifications and benefits seem to fit me perfectly. It is much cheaper than the elite visa, it exempts monies earned overseas and remitted to Thailand. If one still wants to work the BOI will help one get a work visa and the taxes earned in Thailand will be lower than normal. Check out this visa - I did mine in 3 weeks.

I too did my new one in November last year but I did the transfers myself, IO also wanted a "new" tm.30 and did the 90-day report on that date too, besides the transfers (1hour) the TM.30 and 90-day at CM took less than 10 minutes. never have used an agent, I retired 20 years ago and never had any problems though it used to take a long time but now things are much better in CM than they used to be in my opinion.

Well, not to beat a dead horse so to speak, but even "reputable" tax agents do not have the ENTIRE story yet as the Thai RD still has not gotten all the approvals that they must need so there is no one unless someone believes in an omnicient diety that can provide definitive what will or will not occur once the RD does put out "official" guidance. From this forum we see regularly that even the local RD officials do not have any clues nor have all of them been schooled on what will be the final package. I for one will not be affected by whatever they do as far as taxes are concerned but everyone needs to relax unless something does come out that affectsl everyone or just 1 or 2 or none of us. take care all and good luck

folks still don't understand the LTR visa - re-qualify after 5 years...1-year just you or your agent can report your current address (that is if you spent the year in Thailand) each exit out of Thailand does like the 90-day report for the yearly report - that is, it resets your yearly report to 365 days in the future. amazing that so many still pass on erroneous info re the LTR - obviously some kind of regret that they don't have one or can't get one. The requirements and benefits are open-sourced so just some lazy folks.

I did a quick google on international school fees in CM - those schools that did not provide their fees there were ones I am already familiar with as my daughter recently completed shools Chiang Mai International. Her local college fees are cheaper. Prem is very much more expensive and if one reads about a particular school, then they can contact that school for the fee. CMIS bought an online teaching program several years ago so that when the pollution is too bad and the schools are ordered closed, their students don't miss any academics. They also have renovated the school facilities recently and included among benefits - two air purifiers in all classrooms. Even if other schools remain open during extremely high pollution reports, CMIS will do online teaching so that their students can remain in class but in their own home. There are several great international schools in CM, some are geared towards EU standards and others US standards - be sure to check that a school does have international standards approved to insure students can easily go to college overseas. Both of my daughters have done highschool in International schools and both are either doing great in college or one is done with that and is working in a very successful job in the US. The older one went to international schools in Thailand, the PI and graduated in Rome. They also get a great culture awareness benefit and learn to better accept those that are from different races and nationalities and thus they themselves are better accepted by others. Not all, as in many IS the local rich also go in preparation for overseas colleges - some are great, others just don't outgrow some bad characteristics. If one choses to go to a CM school, housing for transportation to the school is a definite investigation too. Good Luck wherever you choose to send your child/children.

previously here, "kids" went their way, had babies and then left them to be raised more or less by grandparents. Now grandparents are too old or refusing to do the daily care as they can't afford it either so those that get married get a cat or dog, keep puting the "having babies" down the road so to spead as the cost of their own selves is just about beyond them. Then they read how useless much of the schooling is and see from their own experience that no change has come about so they delay having any kids too. The costs of raising children in many countries, especially some developed countries too and their birth rates are also falling. In many countries, immigrants will probably outnumber locally-born citizens. this has always been the case for the US as their immigration laws have always been to allow higher numbers of legal immigrants than most countries and at the same time the US is "swamped" by millions of illegal immigrants so the workforce continues to grow instead of decreasing as in other countries that are now being forced to ask retirees to return to work or raising retirement ages of workers. One Thailand forecast (not sure how valid of course) was that at the current birthrate, within 30 years the population may be cut in half. Latest census reports for some countries also show a remarkable decline in populations.

Except when Hinduism came about, the country wasn't called India plus the areas where Hinduism spread were called many different names and many different Gods worshiped throughout their history, but I am definitely not any kind of expert on religions of any type.

One fact for sure in all this - Israel is the only nation on earth that inhabits the same land, bears the same name, speaks the same language and worships the same GOD that it did 3000 years ago.

I only have a US govt pension which according to the DTA is not assessible in Thailand plus I obtained the BOI LTR so am exempt on any foreign remittances so I will do nothing different unless they do add that even with nothing assessible, one who stays more than 180 MUST get a tax ID and in that case I will get an ID number IAW the new law which would have to be amended since it now states that one must get a tax ID number within 60 days after remitting assessible funds into Thailand. I really do not believe they will be able to even begin processing all of the input from ex-pats and it will be interesting to hear how many Thais are actually affected if any.

that is why we must wait until the Thai revenue department comes out with the final paper explaining how THEY are going to interpret our incomes if at all. They might realize at some point that with all the different incomes reported from around the world and the 61 DTA's that it is too complicated and they take the easy way out...possibly why they are saying "voluntary" filing of tax forms to see what drops out.

I don't have a persecution complez, I am an American and basically could care less what you think ...I have my opinions based on my upbringing, education, career, living in many different countries and cultures. You on the other hand definitely seem to have a complex. Sorry for you. Anyway, bye bye end of my comments on this situation.

well you could always go to the middle east area and join some radical Muslim jihad against the west. They have enough problems of their own trying to come to some agreement since the mid 600's after Mohammed passed away and trying to decide who is the real leader...they gladly bomb and kill each other while keeping a foot on all female education. I am an American and proud of it...I do not have to agree with what the Israeli's are doing in the Gaza strip but if I was an Israeli and Hamas attacked my country and killed innocent folks in October, I definitely would want to destroy Hamas and feel thatis that Israel wants to get rid of Hamas which the Palestinians have allowed Hamas sanctuary to carry out reglar attacks on Israel.

you need to do some reading about Iraq...that actually began in the early '90's as Sadam invaded Kuwait...then he did created other anti-western activities, leading the US and other EU countries to smack him. An ugly situation for sure as the west drew the borders of today too long ago and never really thought about the resulting problems. This has been going on for centuries as too western countries took over and stole from countries around the world. The US only ruled countries that had been ceded to them by other nations and the US has given or offered total freedom for those countries. Some still refuse to become free states as they get too many benefits from remaining within the periferals of the US. Some are still waiting for statehood although free nations.

query the military which can't fulfill their voluteer quotas anymore although salaries and retirement for the military have increase quite a bit and they can retire at a much younger age with enough money and health care for them to do well. Most private retirement funds have dried up and folks just don't make enough to save what they really need in retirement. Folks too are tired of spending so much money overseas for those that really don't support the US anymore. Yeah some folks make a lot of money off of war but those started rich anyway and just get richer. Too many folks dislike the US because they are jealous of the opportunities that do exist and many younger Americans just don't seem to see the same opportunities. What I guess bothers too many foreigners is that success was born due to immigrants as they are the ones that built the US and instilled the spirit which seems to be fading among my countrymen. But, I love it here in Thailand and plan to be put to rest here too. I spent a couple of years at war and became a believer in no-war but if push came to shove - even at a ripe old age I would willingly go to help. Yes, a lot of folks continue to ask questions of all kinds based on their individual situation and yes, many others may be in the same type situation but since readers of this forum come from a variety of countries, many with DTA's and totally different tax situations in other countries and several generous individuals have given freely of their time to try to answer as many as they can but in a majority of the cases over the last few weeks, I fail to see WHY folks don't seem to understand that Mike and the other generous folks can not predict the future nor can they be all-kowing in many tax situations - many haveadvised everyone using this forum or listening to tax agents, seminars etc, they are only guessing at what the final interpretation by the Thai Revenue Department/govt that might or might not affect all or none of us so we need to give these generous guys a hearty thanks and a break from the oft repeated and possibly off the wall tax questions. Again, from the beginning I was totally ignorant of all the local tax laws...fortunately, I didn't break any Thai tax law as my pension is a government pension. I didn't know that about the remitting funds, etc, gifts any of that stuff nor about the DTA but, shortly after this forum let us know about the new interpretation, I read what Mike and others put together for general reading and always the advice that has been passed on - NOTHING that anyone tells you is definite about the new interpretation until the final comes out...I researched the documentation of the Thai's, the DTA so that I learned entirely about my particular situation. I know for sure I will not be affected unless everybody is affected and laws/treaties are changed so although I read this subjecet regularly, I am amazed that Mike and others have as much patience as they do, repeating over and over the same stuff. Hey, how about the latest where Putin put out a paper saying that he plans to draw the Baltic Sea coasts anew, taking property away from several NATO countries...shown on some media of Russian troop landings and other military activities. At the same time a 3rd senior defense official has been replaced by Putin recently. A lot of activity just after his visit with his Chinese buddy.

Most people just bury their heads in the sand so to speak and then there are others that are buried totally. My opinion but obviously in a different world.

Yeah, and if folks think that many senior military like those in Russia will maybe take a stand against Putin...has anyone noticed that 3 of the top Russian military have been removed due to "corruption" recently? On top of this many have died in the Ukraine plus Putin has a habit of losing some former supporters due to high balconeys and "natural" causes or plane crashes. Little Rocket Man may be the spark so the Chinese and Russians keep him up with the latest in war machines. Scary for sure. Japan and Taiwan folks must sleep lightly if at all. Hope is about all that is left.
