In the above case, you should see a message saying that its re-starting the engine for "climate control". 

Good point, I did have the a/c on. I didn't see a message but it could be that I missed seeing it.

I did not have a test drive. I know more experienced people would have. The fact was that I had not driven a car for over 4 years and before that always a manual gear change car. I wanted and did take it slow and easy for the first day or two. Also the car I would test drive would not be the actual car I would buy.

I am now happy with the car, they did find me a spare wheel and charged a reasonable 2,500 baht. They wanted too much for a scissor jack and wheel nut spanner but I have these now, including a tube that fits over the wheel spanner to give extra leverage.

I am not sure that they would have explained the auto stop start satisfactorily, also not many here in Isaan speak good English, and I cannot understand Thai language.

I think you are right.

Today I did a few tests. When I stopped with my foot on the brake pedal the engine stopped. I keep my foot pushing down on the brake pedal and the engine remained off, at this time the brake lights are on. When I applied the hand brake as well as the foot brake the engine remained off. Doing almost anything else e.g. shifting the gear lever to Neutral, lifting my foot off the brake pedal, even undoing my drivers seat belt or opening the drivers door causes the engine to start.

I fail to understand why it is programmed to restart the engine if I move the gear lever to Neutral, undoing my seat belt or opening my drivers door?

I did stop at red lights that were counting down from 120, I kept my foot on the brake but when the count was down to about 70 the engine started, maybe I was not pressing hard enough down on the brake, I need to test it again.

When I stopped at a small T junction, only a very short stop, the engine stopped, then almost immediately started again as I applied the accelerator …….. that to me was definitely wrong but the car had no way of knowing.

I do admit that being 68 years old and until now only owning old cars in the UK that I tend to want to preserve the older battery and starter motor, thus I only turned the engine off I knew I had to wait at traffic lights a long time.

I need to test more but at the moment it is looking like I would prefer the auto stop start to be off as I can decide better than the car. A shame that you need to turn it off every time you switch the engine off and on again.

On a different subject the sales lady today dropped off the Owners Manual in English which is great. I did ask if I could have it as a computer PDF file but was told they do not have a PDF file. It is difficult for me to understand why many places in Thailand prefer to have manuals and documents printed out on paper. Thai Immigration must have about 50 copies of the same pages of my passport even though the same details are saved digitally on their database, I can’t even imagine where they all are?  

I will contact Toyota head office later to try to obtain the PDF file.

I also have a Honda Scoopy and also keep the idle stop off but it remains off without having to turn it off every time. I then switch off if I stop at traffic lights with more than about 35 seconds to wait.

I’m not sure yet what type of battery is in the Yaris. As you need to turn the idle stop off every time you start the Yaris I thought I would see if I could use it in a good way with it on.

Concerning the Owner’s Manual. When looking for information I usually find the internet very good but occasionally not. I have had a look and actually downloaded a 2020 Yaris Owners Manual as a PDF file but it is not the actual correct manual.

I registered at the Toyota Yaris Owners club, it prompted for me to enter the VIN number which I did several times but always had a message that it is an invalid number. I entered the 17 digit VIN number by copy and paste and also manually, I think it is a known fault. Going to the download section it states no Owner’s Manual.

It's a good suggestion to telephone the head office but at the moment I will see if the sales lady obtains it for me when I go for the free 1000 km service.

For many years in the UK Manuals have been provided as PDF files which I think is ideal for everyone including the Planet.

I will also ask at that time about the metal cylinder.

The automatic engine stop start , you should be able to leave the car in Drive , and the engine will stop when the car comes to rest.  It will start again (automatically) as soon as you press the accelerator/throttle/gofast pedal.  Putting the hand brake on means you don't have to keep your foot on the brake pedal. When you are set to go, just take off handbrake, press the pedal to the metal, and you are winning the green light speedway!

Thank you G Rex. After posting I then thought a bit and decided that to keep the engine off I would keep my foot on the break pedal even if the rear brake lights are on but I still need to check this.

But after reading your helpful comments it would be better to just put the handbrake on and release my foot off the brake pedal.

My memory is now not good, I think after putting the handbrake on the engine started when I removed my foot from the brake pedal ........... but I need to check again.

11 days ago I bought a new Toyota Yaris and am happy enough with it. It does not come with a spare, instead it has the electric pump and glue, so before buying I did specify that I wanted a spare tire and they did provide me with a full size spare tire. I bought a jack and wheel nut spanner so I am happy.

The Owners manual is in English but I have been assured that I will receive an manual in English 30 days after purchase. Thailand seems to like a lot of paper, I would much prefer a PDF computer file which must exist.

I do have 2 questions

1. Originally in the foam that fits in the spare wheel compartment was the glue and pump + the photo attached. Does anyone know what it is used for?  

2. The auto turning off of the engine. I have not tried but I think you can turn it off but you would have to turn it off every time you start the engine.

For instance I approach a traffic light on red, as I slow and lightly touch the break I hear the engine turn off. So far so good, the lights were going to stay on red for a long time as the count down was 120. If I keep my foot pushing down on the brake the engine keeps off but I suspect that the bright rear brake lights will be on (I need my gf to leap out and to check sometime).  So I put the hand brake on, engine still off but as soon as I move the gear stick from drive into neutral the engine starts up? Why?

Ideally I would want the engine to stay off but then come on when I put the gear stick back into Drive.  Any way to accomplish this without turning this “auto turn off” off every time?

Any help appreciated.

I am still in Khon Kaen as I decided to stay because of much more covid in PKK. I have had my two jabs, first Sinovac,  then Astra Zenica.  My gf Pet has had Sinovac, Astra Zenica on the 27th of this month. 

To complicate things a bit, but I think for the best I bought a car a week ago, a new Toyota Yaris. so now not need to hire a car and can be very flexible on travels. Some might think I am a bit sad but I like to think very organised ...... basically 4 large white plastic storage boxes just fit into the back of the car with the rear seats down. In these boxes + a few bits like a couple of floor fans and a cooking table that comes apart very flat, will be all we need to live well ......... very flexible to move around. The only possible delay will be that I need the car to have the red plates removed and the white plates fitted. 

So it now looks like we will be in Hua Hin at the end of November ...... that's OK in that there is a lot of rain now.

I am really looking forward to moving to Hua Hin, I have read so much on the internet.

Just to try and help.

I have just done my 90 day report online with no problems. Just after I submitted it showed as pending. Two hours later I looked and it was approved.

When online reporting first started I took a long filling in the fields and it failed. I experimented a bit as there was mention that in didn't work with some browsers. I didn't have a problem after I had all information to copy and paste, except for 3 fields in the address where you have to start typing then pick from a drop down list, but I had the exact information ready. 

I was convinced that the Browser used did not matter. Also that there is some kind of time out, basically if you take too long you will get an error. I cannot be 100% sure but that is what I think.

Two months ago we nearly handed notice to leave our rented apartment in Khon Kaen and to relocate to Hua Hin.  Khon Kaen has been fine but thinking Hua Hin may be better, plus a good base to visit more of Thailand. At that time there was near zero Covid-19 cases in Khon Kaen so we decided to delay, now a lot more cases in KK but now waiting to be vaccinated. I have had my first jab and just today my gf heard that she has an appointment for her first jab.  So it looks like we will be in Hua Hin by November and then will look to buy a car.

I have learnt a lot.  The 70Mai seems to have many good reviews. As I want a rear camera I think it will be the Pro+ or the A800, I will make sure at the time.

@G Rex  You are right, I think it is because my career was in electronics and in that (as some other jobs also) things have to be exact or mistakes would be made.  Also I have never before taken an interest in cars. 

There does seem to be some confusion especially the VIN indicating the Model Year which in this case is 2022, I do find it strange that the Model is introduced in 2022 but being sold now! 

But hey I have been living in Thailand for 4 years so things like that do not bother me much.

Now off to play some Petanque in the nearby park.

@thailand49 I'm not sure I know what you mean by window guards. Awnings were mentioned and when I asked what they were I was told they fit just above the windows to stop rain coming in. I guess that they also help block the sun. Is that what you were referring too? I have attached a photo

It was my first time ever visiting a car showroom, I have learnt a lot mainly from people on this forum after the visit. I did take the  attached photos which didn't indicate the date of manufacture. 

Next time I will know more, and be more prepared and focused.

I could have just agreed to the tint and I know I would be very disappointed if it makes visibility worse. I feel that safety is so much more important than increased privacy.

The car sales ladies were not good.

I am 68 years old, healthy and eyesight good, but I do not like riding or driving at night.

So after reading all your helpful posts I would definitely have a very minimum tint on the windscreen, and probably minimum tint on all other windows as well. 

I think Safety before any unnecessary privacy (in my case).

I am a bit confused?

Bbko post states 70% is not dark tint   5% is very dark

G Rex post states 60% is dark tint 20% not so dark.

I did understand what they were saying and both very helpful but they cannot both be correct?

Two days ago I visited two main car dealers in Khon Kaen, Honda and Toyota.

I looked at the new Honda Hatchback and the Toyota Yaris.

Both places offered me free tinted windows.

I am starting from scratch, I do not understand at all what the free tint will give me.

I have read that good tint protects against the harmful UV rays of the sun without being too dark which to me sounds very good.

I have always had an old car in the UK and so never visited a car showroom before and never thought about tinted windows because it is not necessary in the UK.

At the Honda showroom.

The car windows looked clearer than most cars you see driving about on Thailand roads but I thought they did look a bit tinted but I was not sure.

I asked the question “If I do not want the tint added do the windows come as this showroom car?” 

The answer was “Yes”.

I asked “So do these windows give protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun?”

The answer was “Yes they give protection against the sun”

I asked “So would tinted windows give more protection against the sun?”

The answer was “Yes”

At the Toyota showroom.

I thought the showroom car windows were very clear, no tint.

I asked the same questions and was told that the showroom car windows would give no UV protection against the sun.

Basically I have no experience concerning tinted windows.   Can I please ask:-

1. Does a basic car in Thailand without the free tint windows give any protection against the sun?

2. Should I say Yes to the free tinted windows?

3. What would be done? Do they stick dark plastic sheet on the windows?

The link you gave is good but even that leads me to be confused. It states:-

Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS)

Letters and numbers 10 through 17 is the Vehicle Descriptor Section. This gives you information such as when it was produced, what options it comes with and so on.

As you can see, each letter or number has been assigned to two different years. To find out which one applies to your VIN, you must look at the 7th letter or number in your VIN. If the 7th VIN position is a letter, then your vehicle is made in 2010 through 2039. If the 7th VIN is a number, then your vehicle is made prior to 2010.

The VIN it seems doesn’t give information when it was produced, only the Model Year.

Also the 7^th character for the car I looked at is a number, hence it was made prior to 2010! But it obviously wasn’t!

Sorry if I am wrong but it does seem that some web sites are misleading or the other possibility is that Honda put the wrong VIN number on the car and the 7^th digit should have been a letter?  This is also why my intial result stated the car model year as 1992.
