Hundreds of Thai netizens have heaped praise on the Sithat kindergarten in Udon Thani province for their inclusive approach to children who will not be with their mothers on Saturday, the national Mother’s day. School activities on Mother’s Day usually involve students bringing their mothers to school. The mums then line up on stage for their children to pay their respects. In past years this has, however, drawn some criticism from those concerned for children who have no mother to come to school on the occasion. Thailand is seeking help from the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to get China and Laos to manage the discharge of water downstream from their dams properly, as the rising level of the Mekong River is threatening to flood Thailand’s eight riparian provinces. Surasee Kittimongkol, secretary-general of Thailand’s National Water Resources Office, said today (Friday) that the water level in the Mekong is rising due to accumulated water from heavy rain in the lower Mekong and northern Laos. Compounded by heavy rain in Thailand’s north and northeast, due to the influence of a low pressure cell prevailing over northern Vietnam and southern China, he said that the level of water in lower Mekong River will increase steadily. Pheu Thai party deputy leader Phumtham Wechayachai admitted today (Friday) that how the party proceeds in the formation of the new government will be dictated by “political mathematics”. He expressed his appreciation to about 40 Palang Pracharath MPs, led by Pai Leeke, who have offered unconditionally to vote in support of the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Srettha Thavisin. He said that Pheu Thai has made clear that it wants to form a “special” government, which does not side with any political faction, in order to resolve the crises confronted by the country, adding that, after the selection of the prime minister, the party will start the process of forming the administration. A sombre chapter was added to the tragic toll of Thailand’s perilous roads today, as a 48 year old Scottish man became yet another victim. The unfortunate incident unfolded when Robert Griffin, a shipping officer from Fife, lost control of his white Honda Click motorbike, resulting in a head-on collision with another motorcyclist in Krabi, a province in southern Thailand. The fateful collision occurred as the Scottish man was on his way to local shops in Krabi’s Ao Nang district. His motorbike veered into the opposite lane, leading to a head-on crash with a motorcycle-and-sidecar vehicle. The impact caused Griffin’s motorbike to spin off the road. Police officers discovered him unconscious and severely injured at the roadside around 10am. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Griffin’s severe head injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Griffin, who had been visiting Thailand for a holiday, had only arrived in the country the day before the tragic incident. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the crash site, cooperating with police officers and paramedics. The Scottish man’s unnamed Thai wife expressed shock over the incident. She told the Thai media that he had flown in from Scotland for one of his regular holidays in Thailand, arriving just a day before the accident. She recounted her disbelief, admitting she had always urged him to exercise caution while riding the motorbike. Does Pheu Thai want to have its cake and eat it too? Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidate Paetongtarn Shinawatra leads a march by the party’s top executives to the Move Forward party HQ on Wednesday. It could be seen as one of Pheu Thai’s most humiliating moments, a political party that prides itself on its pro-democracy stance. Its top brass, including one of its prime ministerial candidates, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, literally walked to the headquarters of the Move Forward party on Wednesday to beg for support for its ongoing attempts to form a coalition government. Its top brass, including one of its prime ministerial candidates, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, literally walked to the headquarters of the Move Forward party on Wednesday to beg for support for its ongoing attempts to form a coalition government. It’s only a short walk between the offices of the two parties, making the march a perfect political stunt, which resounded loudly on social media. On one hand, it served Pheu Thai’s purpose of publicly demonstrating how serious it is in enlisting Move Party’s support to end the current political impasse. The party, which has Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan as its leader, has not yet been approached by Pheu Thai to join the coalition, according to Pai. Police arrested a former Royal Thai Navy (RTN) officer who shot one woman and sexually harassed another woman at a local grocery in the northern province of Chiang Rai. The suspect shocked the community after saying he could kill anybody because he was a former RTN officer. Chaing Khong Police officers rushed to the incident scene at the grocery store in the Chaing Khong district after a resident tipped off the police yesterday evening. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, 48 year old Nongnuch Saenboonma, with a severe gunshot wound to her stomach, and rushed her to a hospital. The gunman, 69 year old Thana Hinsuwan, had been caught by the victim’s friends at the scene. The weapon used in the incident, a .38 pistol, was confiscated by the police. Thana’s inebriated state hindered any meaningful communication with officers on the scene. The victim’s-friend, Thaworn Klatham, told reporters that the former RTN officer drank four bottles of beer at the grocery store and later asked if he could sit with them and their five friends. He then ordered a bottle of alcohol to share with the group. As the effects of alcohol took hold, Thana’s behaviour grew increasingly inappropriate. The former RTN officer sexually harassed a woman sitting near him by touching her breasts. Everybody at the table advised him to return home for his safety but Thana insisted on staying.
