Whilst the full economic and environmental damage to Phuket and local Andaman coastlines is yet to be realised, the evidence of the catastrophe keeps rolling up along the shores of the island. Two more sea turtles have been rescued from Phuket’s northern beaches after being found covered in oil. Officials are investigating the source of oil slicks that have appeared several beaches along the island’s west coast. It’s understood that police reports have been filed against a number of unnamed vessels, which marine officials believe may have dumped engine oil or bunker oil into the waters off the coastline of Phuket. The oil slick has also landed on beaches north and south of the island as well, as far north as Thai Muang Beach in Phang Nga. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet has given the green light to a draft royal decree that permits the cultivation of opium and magic mushrooms for medicinal use on a trial basis. The proposal, presented by the Justice Ministry, received unanimous support from key government bodies including the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry, Interior Ministry, Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council, and the Royal Thai Police. The draft decree, upon announcement in the Royal Gazette, will mark the commencement of this ambitious project. Carefully reviewed by the Council of State, an advisory body on legal matters, the decree has been designed to foster innovation and reduce the nation’s dependence on imported morphine and anti-depressants. Under the new regulation, the International Narcotics Control College, situated within Chiang Rai’s Chiang Saen district, will be authorized to cultivate opium for medicinal purposes. This college, overseen by the Office of Narcotics Control Board, will facilitate the extraction of morphine by the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation in their laboratories located in Bangkok and Pathum Thani. The decree also aims to enable the growth of magic mushrooms in designated universities and educational institutions across four regions of Thailand. Institutions approved for the project will be those deemed ready to embark on experimental projects to create anti-depressants from the extracts of magic mushrooms. Magic mushrooms contain essential compounds, psilocybin, and psilocin, which possess promising potential for developing anti-depressant drugs. Thailand has witnessed a significant rise in the number of depression diagnoses, with approximately 1.76 million cases recorded between 2015 and 2020. Experts said the initiative is expected to pave the way for cost-effective domestic production of these crucial drugs, thereby saving the country a substantial amount of money. Besides the findings, the court also ordered the NACC to release its summary report on the scandal and the four statements given to the watchdog by General Prawit by Friday August 11th. NACC secretary-general Niwatchai Kasemmongkol said that they cannot reveal publish all the investigative reports about the case to protect the safety of the witnesses otherwise, in the future, witnesses would not dare to come forward to the NACC to testify. NACC’s investigative reports are equivalent to police investigative reports on criminal cases, which are considered confidential and cannot be disclosed to the public, said Niwatchai. He also said that he has an appointment with self-made graft-busting crusader Veera Somkwamkid to explain why the NACC has not disclosed the findings in the wristwatch investigation after the Administrative Court ordered it to do so. The political party registrar has rejected three petitions demanding the dissolutions of the Pheu Thai, Move Forward and Palang Pracharath parties. The first petition was submitted by Sonthiya Sawasdee, a former member of the House Committee on Justice and Human Rights Affairs, demanding the dissolution of the Pheu Thai party, claiming that it allows an outsider to dominate the party, in violation of the Political Parties Act. The second, also submitted by Sonthiya, demands the dissolution of the Move Forward party, claiming that the political rallies it organised in several provinces, as well as the rally in front of parliament on July 13th, constitute a violation of the Political Parties Act. The former national police chief said that the election campaign is over and what the Pheu Thai party pledged then was intended to encourage people to vote “for the now”. He added, however, that it is now the time for the selection of the prime minister and the formation of a new government and, therefore, people should be more open minded and forget the promises made regarding the two military-linked parties. Conservative parties in pole position as Pheu Thai struggles to form coalition govt. Almost three months after the May 14 general election, Pheu Thai officially formed a new alliance with Bhumjaithai on Monday (August 7), and announced they are open to more political parties joining to form Thailand’s next government. The new coalition emerged just days after Pheu Thai’s political divorce from the Move Forward Party, which won the largest number of seats in the election but failed to secure majority support from Parliament for its prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat. A naked thief with the gift of invisibility was caught on CCTV stealing money from a charity box at Lhem Tai Temple in the central province of Chachoengsao in the early hours of yesterday morning. The abbot of the temple, 62 year old Jamlong, revealed to Channel 3 that a fellow monk, 52 year old Chantapon, woke up at about 3am for his morning devotions and saw a naked man taking a walk inside the temple. Chantapon did not dare to approach the man because he noticed the man holding a knife. According to Chantapon, the thief stole something before rushing out of the temple, putting on his clothes and fleeing the scene. Chantapon then informed the abbot and fellow monks. The abbot later filed a complaint with the police. The abbot, Jamlong, added that the criminal activities were captured on CCTV. Jamlong handed the footage to the police and several news agencies in a bid to arrest the thief as fast as possible. In the footage, the man is seen standing still and praying outside the temple. Then, he takes off his clothes and strolls into the temple. The abbot believes that the naked thief did not try to hide from cameras or eyewitnesses because he reckoned he had the mystical ability to turn invisible.
