Officials at Thailand’s Marine Department have put forward a proposal to develop dedicated cruise ship terminals in Phuket, Pattaya and on Koh Samui. The Bangkok Post reports that the department says the terminals would enable these key destinations to tap into a fast-growing tourism market. Department figures show that in pre-pandemic times, Thailand was one of the most popular stops on cruise liner routes through the region. Figures from 2018 show that 219 cruise ships stopped in Phuket, 149 in Bangkok’s Port and Laem Chabang in Chon Buri, and 89 at Koh Samui. Officials believe that having dedicated cruise terminals in each of these areas would attract yet more ships, generating more revenue for local economies. The data shows that the average cruise ship passenger spends more than passengers arriving by air or overland. Cruise ship passengers spend an average of 7,000 baht a day in Bangkok and Pattaya, 6,400 baht a day in Phuket, and 4,200 baht a day on Koh Samui. Bangkok Airways has resumed its direct service between Hong Kong and Koh Samui, following a 3 year hiatus during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Phuket Express reports that tourism officials welcomed the return of the first direct flight after the suspension was lifted. Bangkok Airways are the sole owners of the Samui Airport and routinely price their direct flights into the island at a premium, sometimes up to 5 times what would expect from similar length domestic flights around Thailand. Representatives of the Tourism Authority of Thailand were at Koh Samui International Airport to greet passengers arriving from Hong Kong. According to the report, a total of 113 passengers were on board the flight. The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a major blow to the global economy in 2021 but Thai listed companies delivered record foreign income in the year, suggesting that their foreign direct investment provides a buffer against the economic headwinds and could give a significant boost to income in the time of the burgeoning economy. In 2021, listed companies reached a record high of USD 136.88 billion (THB 4.38 trillion) in foreign-sourced revenue, attributable to overseas businesses and exports. The foreign revenue accounted for 32 percent of their total revenue and soared by USD 43.44 billion (THB 1.39 trillion) or 46.35 percent from the previous year, bolstered by a 48-percent jump in overseas business income and a 22-percent surge in export income. Though companies in the resources industry attributed the largest year-on-year increase of USD 49.38 billion (THB 1.58 trillion) among its peers in other industry groups following an increase in output and oil prices, the agriculture and food industry trailed behind with a hefty increase of USD 33.13 billion (THB 1.06 trillion). Thanks to the foreign-sourced revenue, listed companies’ combined revenue was as high as USD 427.50 billion (THB 13.68 trillion) in 2021, a 23.1 percent increase from the previous year, even when Thailand faced rounds of serious infections and economic activities came to a halt. The combined net profits of USD 32.50 billion (THB 1.04 trillion) was even above the 2019 level, when the world was free from COVID-19. Despite emerging uncertainties from the COVID-19 outbreak in 2021, a number of domestic listed companies in the year maintained the overseas investment spree. In the year, 278 Thai listed companies or 36 percent of the total number of companies listed on both The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) and Market for Alternative Investment (mai) made net foreign direct investment worth totally USD 3.44 billion (THB 110 billion). The sum was below USD 4.45 billion (THB 139.4 billion) in 2020 and the record USD 9.51 billion (THB 295.3 billion) amount in 2019, but it reflected Thai companies’ enthusiasm to grow international exposure and diversify business risks in light of uncertainties. The outbound direct investments in 2021 were made mostly by large size companies and those with international exposure had a combined market capitalization of 77 percent of total. The lower foreign direct investment was consistent with the results of the Stock Exchange of Thailand’s CEO Survey in 2020 that showed the companies’ plan to invest more domestically and less overseas, with focus on the efficiency in supply chain management. To these companies, ASEAN was the most popular destination, attracting the investments of 217 companies. Vietnam was the most attractive destination, receiving the investments from 84 Thai listed companies, followed by Singapore and Myanmar. The investments also went to North Asia, South Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the U.S., Australia and Africa. Remarkably, North Asia and South Asia witnessed an increase, compared to 2020. By industry group, the Services was the most active in growing overseas exposure with 65 companies or 38 percent investing abroad in 2021, followed by the Industrials and Property & Construction at 47 and 42 companies, respectively. It will not be surprising if these companies invest more overseas, as long as there is a window of opportunity. #news Source: https://www.thailandnow.in.th/business-investment/thai-listed-companies-post-record-foreign-revenue/ -- © Copyright THAILAND NOW 2023-07-05 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. BANGKOK (NNT) - The World Bank’s Thailand Economic Monitor for June 2023 indicates the Thai economic recovery is projected to accelerate. The World Bank’s forecast for 2023 Thai GDP growth has also been revised upward to 3.9 percent due to stronger than expected external demand. Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri made known that in acknowledgment of this development, Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his thanks to the work of all relevant parties that enabled the economic recovery. He added the premier was confident in his administration’s economic stimulus policies which were the results of continuous assessments of the economic condition. The policies were meant to deliver the highest gains in the aspect of strengthening the Thai economy, and the World Bank’s revised projections reflect the successes of said policies. The World Bank deemed Thailand’s economic growth rebounded by 4.5% in the first quarter of 2023 due to domestic demand and tourism. The World Bank report said the current account balance is expected to reverse from the deficit in the past two years and return to positive territory in 2023 at 2.5% of GDP, due to trade in both goods and services. Meanwhile, it said labor market conditions have improved due to the recovery of sectors related to tourism, trade, and hospitality. The report noted the unemployment rate stood at 1.1%, down from 1.5% in the same quarter last year. Anucha noted that according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, more than 12.4 million foreign tourists have visited Thailand since the beginning of the year, generating about 500 billion baht of income for the country. The spokesman added the World Bank report projected the Thai economy will expand by 3.6 percent and 3.4 percent in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Nonetheless, it noted there were still risks that must be navigated, such as a weaker-than-expected growth of the global economy and various other challenges such as climate change. It also mentioned Thailand frequently suffers from droughts and floods, although it noted that progress has been made to better cope with floods and droughts. Pheu Thai MP Pichet Chuamuangphan, who became the second deputy House speaker-elect uncontested on Tuesday, is known for his “gesture” politics. When his name is mentioned, people remember his strong criticism of political opponents when he spoke during parliamentary sessions. On several occasions Pichet, 60, cursed and damned those and their families who he claimed had corrupted the country. Sometimes he used such expletives, which he was asked to withdraw. Trang province boasts a brilliant new tourist attraction that has already grabbed the attention of foreign visitors. Named Nang Fa Waterfall, also known as the slider, offers shimmering water amid a backdrop of stunning nature and enthralling activities. The local community plays a part in preserving and promoting this tourist spot. Residents of Tambon Chong in Trang’s Na Yong district today journeyed to visit this growing eco-tourism destination. Located in the Bantad Mountain Range, the Nang Fa Waterfall presents a rather challenging route for explorers. Travellers must make a left turn at Huai Wua junction, drive for approximately 2 kilometres along a narrow dirt road from the sixth-kilometre marker on the Ka Chong-Laem Had Road, before embarking on a 2-kilometre walk through rubber and palm oil plantations, as well as dense forests. Sections of the journey also involve wading through small streams. The full journey, which takes nearly 45 minutes, is well worth the effort after viewing the captivating beauty of the waterfall. The waterfall has been in existence for over 30 years, but it was initially narrow and overgrown. However, since residents discovered and began to develop the waterfall as a source of drinking water and leisure within the village, the once-narrow and ragged landscape is now transformed into a magnificent sight. The waterfall’s basin is a huge pool with a depth of 4 metres during the monsoon season. It is complemented by a waterfall flowing from the cliff with an approximate width of 25 metres and height of 50 metres. Beyond this, the upper regions of the waterfall are adorned with small and large rocks, forming various layers along a 6 to 7-kilometre stretch, creating a splendid view against the backdrop of diverse flora and fauna such as ta-khian trees, teak, elephant foot yam, and wildlife such as gibbons, squirrels, deer, monkeys, wild boars, beautiful butterflies, and indigenous fish. Thanks to communal efforts, there have been no reports of illicit logging or any detrimental activities in years, KhaoSod reported. Highway Police officers arrested a Chinese man on a highway in Chon Buri province for using a fake registration plate on his luxury Bentley sedan. Highway police officers in Chon Buri province made a surprising discovery on a routine patrol resulting in the arrest of a 34 year old Chinese man, Chaing Meng, for using a fake registration plate on his luxury Bentley sedan. The incident took place on Highway number 344 near the Khaosok district when officers noticed the suspicious vehicle being driven erratically. Following the Bentley, the officers promptly pulled over Chaing and requested the necessary car documents. However, the Chinese driver was unable to produce any, raising further suspicion. A closer inspection revealed that the car lacked an annual tax sticker and was registered under different numbers, indicating the use of a counterfeit plate. The registration plate’s irregularities, including the absence of a watermark and officially issued 10-digit numbers, confirmed its fraudulent nature. Meng claimed ignorance, stating that he had purchased the Bentley from a car showroom on Vipawadee Road in Bangkok. A dramatic incident unfolded at around noon yesterday when a 16 year old girl attempted to commit suicide by leaping from a three-storey school building in Non Din Daeng, Buriram province. Luckily, a male student, also in Year 9, who was nearby playing games, rushed to catch her. They both fell from the third floor of the four-storey structure. As the shocking episode unfolded, the girl, not a student at the school, had gone to visit a friend at the school. For reasons as yet undisclosed, she cried, called for her mother, who works in another province, to bid farewell, and then told her friend goodbye before attempting to jump off the third-floor building in a suspected suicide bid. The quick-thinking male student who saw the event unfold then tried to catch the girl, causing both of them to fall from the building amidst the stunned teachers and students who witnessed the incident. Teachers rushed to the aid of the injured female teenager, identified to have minor injuries to her legs and mouth. The male student who attempted to help, despite sustaining an injury on his hand, didn’t suffer any severe injuries. Emergency services were quickly called, with paramedics responding, and both teenagers were taken to the Non Din Daeng Hospital, Sanook reported. The young rescuer, 14 year old Ice, was unaware of the girl’s suicide intention. He explained that he saw the girl visit her friend during the school lunch break and suddenly burst out crying. Despite attempts by her friend to console her, the teenager didn’t stop.
