At Laem Chabang port in Thailand‘s Chon Buri province, the Customs Department confiscated a total of 161 containers filled with frozen pork carcasses that had been illegally imported from various countries. The illegally imported pork shipments were found to lack proper documentation and certification, raising concerns about the potential spread of disease among both consumers and local livestock farmers. As a result of these risks, the Customs Department has taken extensive measures to address this issue. Following the conclusion of legal proceedings, 159 of the seized containers were transferred to the Animal Quarantine Station in Chon Buri, overseen by the Department of Livestock Development. The illegally imported pork shipments will be disposed of in accordance with the Animal Epidemic Act. Meanwhile, the remaining two containers are still being processed by the Laem Chabang Port Customs Office and cannot yet be released for disposal. In light of these events, the Central Investigation Bureau has been brought in to handle the prosecution of those involved in illegally imported pork shipments. Both corporate and individual entities, including customs officials, government agencies, and other related parties, are implicated in the unauthorized importation of animal carcasses and will be held accountable under the law. To mitigate future risks associated with smuggled live pigs, pork, and pig organs, the Customs Department has implemented stringent preventative measures. Additionally, a dedicated working group has been established to coordinate efforts in addressing issues related to the illegal importation of pork products and the management of confiscated items, reported The Pattaya News. The Rassamee Maneerat Rescue Team in Chon Buri arranged a trip to the beach for a six year old boy who is bravely fighting sarcoma cancer. The boy is under palliative care but dreams to enjoy beach vibes at least once in his lifetime. A Facebook account, Village Headman Montri Trirak, posted pictures capturing the heartwarming moment of the boy, his family members, and rescuers on Bang Saen Beach on Friday, June 16. Montri informed his followers in the caption… “This might be the last opportunity for this six year old boy to see and touch the sea and sand. This beach trip is the first time for him and maybe the last time for him. The boy is in the advanced stages of sarcoma cancer. What he wants is so simple. He just wants to go to the beach once in his lifetime.” Montri explained the more the family sought help from him and the rescue team. So, the relevant departments coordinated and prepared the emergency vans along with the necessary equipment to ensure a safe and comfortable journey to Bang Saen Beach. According to Montri, both the boy and his family were overwhelmed with happiness. Throughout the trip, the boy remained in his father’s embrace. The father immersed his son’s feet and legs in the sea to feel the seawater and the sand. The father kept kissing his cheek and cried. A 54 year old man, Nakorn Mhodcrue, accidentally shot himself while examining his homemade gun in Ratchaburi province, Thailand. Family members rushed him to a hospital, but he died en route, collapsing on the road 100 metres from where the incident took place. At the scene of the accident, on a road near the family home, investigators found a substantial amount of blood along with a blue shirt and a homemade long-barrelled Thai gun. The weapon appeared to have been damaged; the barrel had been broken due to a misfire. Nakorn’s relatives revealed that he was a construction contractor and a gun aficionado. In his free time, he enjoyed adjusting and test-firing his firearms, mainly for hunting and fishing purposes, reported Khaosod. On the day of the incident, Nakorn attempted to test-fire his homemade gun, but it failed to discharge. In an effort to fix the issue, he used a metal object to strike the barrel against the ground, which caused the gun to misfire and the bullet to penetrate his left chest area. Desperate for help, Nakorn asked his family to take him to the hospital. They attempted to transport him by motorbike, but he lost consciousness and collapsed on the road, where he passed away shortly after. Commercial Buildings to Pay Wastewater Treatment Fees BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced its intention to introduce wastewater treatment fees for commercial buildings in the capital, tentatively starting from the end of this year. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1298390-commercial-buildings-to-pay-wastewater-treatment-fees/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced its intention to introduce wastewater treatment fees for commercial buildings in the capital, tentatively starting from the end of this year. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt revealed that the city currently incurs an annual cost of approximately 600 million baht to operate its eight wastewater treatment facilities, yet no charges have been imposed on households or commercial establishments for this service. Under the proposed rates, Category 2 commercial buildings will be charged 4 baht per cubic meter of wastewater discharged into the drainage system, while Category 3 commercial buildings, including hotels and large commercial structures, will face a fee of 8 baht per cubic meter. These fees are calculated based on the assumption that 80% of tap water utilized by commercial buildings eventually finds its way into the drainage system as wastewater. Chadchart noted that commercial buildings equipped with their own treatment facilities will no longer be required to operate these systems, as it will be more cost-effective for them to switch to utilizing the BMA’s wastewater treatment facilities. By imposing fees based on the volume of wastewater discharged, the BMA aims to incentivize commercial buildings to utilize the city’s treatment infrastructure and contribute to the overall sustainability of Bangkok’s wastewater management. Bangkok to Use AI Cams to Curb Traffic Violations BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has unveiled plans to install artificial intelligence-assisted traffic cameras at more than 200 intersections throughout the capital as part of efforts to curb traffic violations. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1298389-bangkok-to-use-ai-cams-to-curb-traffic-violations/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has unveiled plans to install artificial intelligence-assisted traffic cameras at more than 200 intersections throughout the capital as part of efforts to curb traffic violations. According to Bangkok Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon, a trial phase will begin this month, with AI-assisted cameras being deployed at 20 major intersections. Cameras at Arun Amarin and Wong Sawang intersections have already been active since the beginning of June, while the remaining cameras are scheduled to be operational by the end of the month. Provided by the Traffic and Transport Department, these advanced cameras are capable of capturing images of offending vehicles, including their number plates and drivers. Wisanu noted that the cameras will be strategically positioned to effectively detect traffic violations. Offenders will face fines ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 baht, with the corresponding tickets sent to the registered addresses of the vehicle owners. In addition to monitoring violations on the roads, the AI-assisted cameras will also extend their surveillance to nearby footpaths in order to enhance pedestrian safety and ensure compliance with traffic regulations. A recent study conducted by the BMA indicated that only a small percentage of traffic offenders who received tickets actually paid the corresponding fines. By deploying AI-assisted cameras and leveraging technology to improve enforcement capabilities, the BMA now seeks to increase compliance with traffic regulations and ensure a safer and more efficient transportation system in the capital. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Move Forward Party (MFP) has announced its intention to disband the Anti-Fake News Center and initiate a comprehensive restructuring of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society if it forms the next government. In a recent online post, MFP outlined its proposed changes, emphasizing the importance of upholding rights, freedoms and open access to information. The party also reaffirmed its belief that it is not the role of the state to dictate the truth but rather to facilitate a society where diverse perspectives can be examined, debated and presented. Under the party’s proposed government, the ministry would no longer be tasked with blocking websites, instead focusing on safeguarding rights and freedoms. The party has stated its intention to introduce a computer bill aimed at removing state powers that suppress freedom of expression. In addition, MFP pledged to advocate for a single digital identity policy that would enable the integration of databases from various state agencies. This policy aims to streamline access to public services, ensuring ease of use and convenience for citizens. To support economic growth, the party stressed the need for developing the nation’s information technology infrastructure. As part of this plan, a comprehensive database would be established, combining information from state agencies and the private sector. The database would adhere to robust safety standards to protect individuals’ private information while allowing public access for economic and social benefits. The MFP also affirmed its commitment to promoting transparency in government operations. It pledged to create an open system for disclosing information about state procurement projects, making the details easily accessible and subject to scrutiny. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand is embarking on a campaign to promote premium silk products to attract young buyers in Japan, South Korea and Italy, enhancing the kingdom’s soft power and strengthening its position in the global textile market. According to Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri, the initiative, led by the Thailand Textile Institute’s Premium Thai Silk project, aims to introduce newly designed silk products to international markets. Since 2019, the Thai government has been actively promoting Thai silk with innovative designs to domestic consumers, resulting in the creation of 112 new Ikat silk patterns and over 108 new products, including clothing, bags, shoes and accessories. These campaigns have yielded positive results, generating 6.6 million baht in revenue for 1,618 silk entrepreneurs in the Northeast region alone. By targeting young buyers in Japan, South Korea and Italy, Thailand hopes to tap into rising demand for high-quality silk products in these fashion-forward countries. The Thai silk industry is renowned for its craftsmanship and distinctive patterns, which have garnered international recognition over the years. The promotion of Thai silk not only offers economic benefits but also helps preserve the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Silk weaving has deep historical roots in Thailand, and by supporting local silk entrepreneurs, the government seeks to sustain this traditional art and empower communities involved in the industry. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand was placed in Tier 2 in the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report by the United States, reflecting the kingdom’s strong commitment in combating human trafficking. The U.S. State Department released the 2023 Trafficking in Persons Report (2023 TIP Report), which assesses the human trafficking situation in 188 countries or territories around the world. The 2023 TIP Report placed Thailand in Tier 2 for two consecutive years, emphasizing the government’s progress in preventing and fighting human trafficking. Officials have stepped up activities in areas such as trafficking investigations, prosecutions, convictions, and victim identification. The government has meanwhile implemented the National Referral Mechanism (NRM), a framework for identifying victims of human trafficking and ensuring they receive appropriate support. Corrupt officials linked to human trafficking were also prosecuted without leniency. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that combating human trafficking has long been one of Thailand’s top national agendas. It added the government is fully committed and will continue to improve relevant laws and regulations while enhancing operational efficiency. The statement stressed that the government will strengthen partnership with all sides to work towards the ultimate goal, which is to eradicate all forms of human trafficking. It also aims to protect Thai citizens and foreign nationals in the country by preventing them from falling victims to human trafficking, in line with the principles of human rights and humanitarianism to which Thailand has always adhered.
