The Swedish ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Jon Åström Gröndahl, said that although Thailand have the best LGBTQI+ anti-discrimination and harassment laws, that’s just written on a piece of paper. What really needs to be changed in order to tackle the problem is the behavior of people in society and in the workplace. 9. Officials promise to address staff shortages at Thai government hospitals There’s been a lot of discussion in Thai social media about the country’s shortage of doctors and medical staff, in reaction to various political promises before the election. Now, Thailand’s health ministry has set out an agreement with the Civil Service Commission, aimed at addressing a shortage of doctors and nurses in state-run hospitals. Under the agreement, more positions will be opened up, and measures will be put in place to reduce the number of medical personnel leaving to join private hospitals. Thailand has a public health system guaranteeing every Thai person, even legally working expats, with free (or almost free) public health care. 13. An engineer alerted the local police to apprehend a man who was cutting power cables in the middle of a Nonthaburi highway, casting parts of it into darkness over a distance of more than 2 kilometres. At around 3.45pm yesterday, the young man, identified as 30 year old Chotipong, was caught red-handed along with the snipped aluminium power cables stretching 50 metres, cable-cutting equipment, and the vehicle he used in the operation. Arthaporn Prakot, an engineer who works for Nonthaburi’s highway department, stated that frequent power outages had been occurring on several roads. Upon investigation, it was found that the theft and sale of power cables were causing these issues, creating inconvenience and raising the chances of accidents. The light outage spanned approximately 2 kilometres along the highway due to this incident. The thief managed to avoid being electrocuted during the act because the lighting system is automated centithief – meaning power is dispersed along the cables as the system determines it is growing dark. During midday, electricity is not released, which is when Chotipong chose to cut the cables, reported KhaoSod. The Royal Thai Highway Department calculated that for the year 2023, public property theft including power cables, electricity transformers, and other traffic signal equipment, amounted to a staggering loss of more than 30 million baht (US$852,043). 15. A drug addict murdered a 71 year old Buddhist monk at a temple in the Isaan province of Udon Thani. The murderer allegedly said he felt no remorse for his actions because he acted in self-defence. Officers from Kumphawapi Police Station arrested the murderer, 34 year old Wuttichai Mongkhonsaen, for the murder of the 71 year old monk named Dao Kotewongthong. According to the police, Wuttichai beat the monk with a wooden stick at Si Tart Temple on Wednesday, June 21. The monk sustained a broken left arm and suffered a severe head wound. The monk was rushed to a hospital and later succumbed to his injuries that night. Wuttichai was arrested yesterday at his house and tested positive for drugs. Wuttichai allegedly admitted to his criminal action but said that he did not feel sorry for the death of the monk. He said the attack was self-defence because the monk attempted to harm him. According to Wuttichai’s confession, he went to the temple to steal the bamboo shoots which were grown by the dead monk. He went to pick four bamboo shoots to sell to his neighbours for 30 baht so he could buy some Yaba (methamphetamine) pills but the monk stopped him. This made him angry so hit the monk with a wooden stick twice, once to the arm and head. Wuttichai expressed his anger that the monk let other locals take the bamboo but stopped him. 19. Residents in the southern province of Krabi condemned two foreign men for their unruly behaviour after they put their lives in danger to climb a 16-metre tsunami warning tower on Ao Nang Beach. Witnesses speculated that the duo was under the influence of alcohol. A 25 year old Thai woman shared a video of the two foreigners with the Thai news agency. The footage taken at 11pm on Wednesday, June 21, depicted the two foreign men climbing the warning tower and screaming out loud in exhilaration at their audacity. The Thai woman, Ameeroon Luebasani, a staff member of a nearby shopping mall says that she saw two foreign women and two foreign men walking out of an entertainment venue in an intoxicated state. According to Ameeroon, as police officers approached the scene on their motorcycles the foreign women demanded the two men come down. The men rushed down and quickly left the scene. Luckily, no one sustained any injuries during this incident and no damage was done to the tower. Ameeroon stated that she did not get angry at the foreigners, but she was concerned about the image of Krabi province if an accident occurred. She speculated that people would blame the local community for failing to ensure the safety of their foreign visitors. The group is accused of soliciting people to participate in a bogus gold investment scheme, alleging its connection with Thailand’s Crown Property Bureau. The illicit operation, which duped victims of around 500 million baht (US$14,213,630) in total, was run primarily from the notorious Kings Romans casino in the Golden Triangle, Laos, the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) stressed. The alleged linchpin of the operation, identified as 32 year old Teng June, was apprehended in Bangkok’s Bang Khunthian district. In the following days, nine other Thai nationals and one stateless woman involved in the operation were seized in Chiang Rai and Chanthaburi provinces, TCSD commander Athip Pongsiwapai articulated yesterday. At the point of arrest, the police confiscated a comprehensive array of possessions from the criminals, including three luxury vehicles, cash tallying over 5 million baht, 30 gold trinkets, high-range watches, designer bags, computer systems, mobile signals, SIM cards, bank account books, gold certificates, and other mementoes. All the accused were charged with participating in fraudulent activities, inputting inaccurate information into a computer system, and money laundering offences, and are currently being held in police custody awaiting legal proceedings. In the preceding days, the Crown Property Bureau lodged police complaints regarding a group of swindlers who were using the bureau’s name to commence a website coined Royal Gold, aiming to allure people into deceptive gold investment opportunities. The wife, 36 year old Treeraka, told Channel 3 that she married her husband, a 49 year old Thai man named Nikorn, on May 8 in 2017. 25. Officers from Investigation Division Metropolitan Police Bureau (IDMB) arrested a Thai transwoman who lured men into sharing explicit images of their penis and blackmailed them for money. According to the IDMB, the arrest was made on the back of another transwoman’s arrest in the central province of Nakhon Pathom in 2021. The initial case involved Piyachat, who enticed men through provocative photos on Twitter, engaging them in conversation. Piyachat would feign curiosity about the size of their genitals and coax them into sending explicit pictures. Once in possession of the images, she would then threaten to expose them on social media or send them to their partners unless they paid her. Investigating officers uncovered that victims had been coerced into transferring sums ranging from 500 to 1,000 baht per instance. Shockingly, some individuals fell victim to this extortion scheme four to five times a day, resulting in losses exceeding 40,000 baht. Disturbingly, one victim even confessed to contemplating suicide to escape the distress caused by the ordeal.
