A Thai temple in Chiang Mai has revealed lottery numbers after a candlelit blessing ceremony. The numbers in the temple’s sacred water were previously linked to a million-baht winning ticket. The temple continues to host such ceremonies and supports around 30 monks. On May 28, a candlelit blessing ceremony was held at the San Ma Kiang Temple, Chiang Mai Province, by the head monk, Sakchai Wongla, which usually occurs on the last Sunday of every month. During the ceremony, the sacred “Ai Khai” statue was worshipped, and candles were lit on the temple’s enchanted water. This time, the enchanted water revealed several distinct numbers: 6, 9, 5, 4, and 1. Before this event, one student of the temple had already won the first prize lottery back on April 1, 2022, taking home 6 million baht. Moreover, a local vendor who sells lottery tickets at the sample temple, San Ma Kiang Temple, has won several consecutive prizes. The temple is home to approximately 30 monks who are provided with education and involved in projects such as vegetable farming, and raising ducks and hens for food. As the temple experiences high monthly electricity and water costs, individuals are encouraged to share the merit of donating according to their faith. A group of audacious Chiang Mai teenagers, all under the age of 16, astounded onlookers with their outrageous behavior near the historic city moat in Chiang Mai. Their exploits included frolicking in the water, engaging in provocative dance moves, and using electronic cigarettes and inhalants, all while blatantly ignoring the stares and concerns of passersby who observed them. Four males and two females were having fun in the city’s moat near the Thammapakorn nursing home in Chiang Mai. After playing in the water, they gathered near an old guard post, smoked electronic cigarettes, and danced provocatively. These actions occurred during the daytime in the presence of locals and foreign tourists who witnessed the group with suspicion. Despite multiple occasions of these public gatherings, the teens fled when they noticed people taking photos of them. Upon investigation at the scene today, the group of teens was not found; it is possible that they have returned to school. However, alcohol bottles and cans, cigarette packets, and plastic bags with adhesive still remained on the ground. A Chinese tourist was found dead in the early hours of this morning in his rented apartment in Pattaya. Pattaya Police and rescuers from the Sawang Boriboon Thamasathan Foundation were called to the scene in the early hours of today, in Soi Chaloem Phra Kiat 21, Nongprue sub-district of Banglamung district, Chon Buri province. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a Chinese man hanging in a room on the second floor of the building, with a rope tied around his neck and attached to a doorknob in the bathroom. A strong, unpleasant smell filled the room. The Chinese tourist’s identity has been withheld, as per standard editorial policy, until his family and embassy are notified. The authorities restricted access to the room for those not involved in the investigation. A medical team from Banglamung Hospital examined the body and found no signs of physical assault or property disturbance, only an empty alcohol bottle. The property owner, 31 year old Kruawan, told Pattaya News that the Chinese tourist had been renting the room alone since April. He would usually come downstairs to drink beer every day but had not been seen for two days, causing her concern. A camel at a zoo inside Bang Kung Temple in Samut Songkram province in central Thailand bit a Thai man’s ear while he was turning his back to it to feed a buffalo in a nearby cage. The victim, 32 year old Worachat Borriboon, recounted his experience at the temple on May 25 to the media. Worachat explained that he suddenly felt an intense pain in his right ear while he was carrying his child and feeding a buffalo. He touched his ear and found that it was covered with blood. Worachat rushed to clean the wound and discovered that a part of his ear had been torn away. He said he realised immediately that the camel bit him because he was aware of past incidents of camels biting people. Despite being cautious, he still could not avoid the bite. Worachat explained that he often visited the temple with his children as it is close to their home but did not expect to experience this shocking incident. He warned others who loved to visit the temple to beware of the incident and also urged the temple to enhance security measures by implementing a higher fence and displaying warning signs. Supernatural incidents occurred in Suphanburi province, where villagers discovered several chickens with broken necks and disembowelled carcasses. Locals fear supernatural interference, as they also witnessed mysterious floating lights in the area. Boonlai Phetkul, 56 years old, disclosed that the supernatural incidents took place in a neighbour’s chicken coop. Ten chickens were found dead in total since May 23, with five of them completely gutted, their necks broken, and placed in an orderly fashion. No blood or scattered feathers were found at the scene. On the night of May 24, amidst a frightening atmosphere, dogs were barking and whining, prompting villagers to investigate the following morning, discovering five more dead chickens. After posting the incident on Facebook, it was reported that a neighbour had captured images of mysterious floating lights in the sky above. Boonlai believes that these events may be connected to supernatural beings such as the ghostly Kra-Sue or Poab, rather than animal attacks, due to the peculiar nature of the carcasses. Thailand is making significant strides in clean energy development as the government and businesses collaborate on various projects aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Initiatives such as increasing the use of renewable energy sources for electricity generation and promoting electric vehicles (EVs) are helping create new environmentally friendly businesses. Companies that do not adhere to eco-friendly practices may face penalties, while those working to minimise environmental damage could gain certain benefits. One such penalty is the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), introduced by the EU to impose charges on manufacturers that do not follow environmentally friendly practices. Thai businesses are also capitalising on carbon credit trading and renewable energy certificates (RECs) to combat global warming. Carbon credit trading enables companies to sell credits from reduced emissions to other organisations struggling to meet their reduction targets. Meanwhile, RECs encourage power plant owners to generate electricity from clean fuels, with each REC certifying that the bearer generates one megawatt-hour (MWh) from renewable energy resources. However, the recently amended constitution poses challenges for non-military political parties, and the MFP-led coalition still requires additional upper-house votes to secure the 376 seats needed for leadership. This has raised concerns about Thailand‘s political future and its economic prospects. Maddy, a 25 year old online entrepreneur, expressed uncertainty about the nation’s economic outlook due to the winning parties’ inability to form a coalition government. Maddy voted for the Pheu Thai Party, whose digital wallet platform and economic policies aligned with her interests as a business owner. She said… “We have to see how the coalition government is going to turn out. If the new government can help support both small and big businesses as the parties promised, I believe that would really benefit the economy.” Kasikornbank’s research unit (K-Research) warned that a delay in forming a new government could postpone the approval of the annual budget bill for fiscal 2024, impacting budget disbursements from the fourth quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the new government could face fiscal constraints as campaign pledges, such as easing living costs due to high energy prices, require substantial budgets. Business organisations have expressed support for the Move Forward Party’s campaign pledges to address economic inequality in Thailand, but they question the party’s ability to overcome long-standing issues. On May 22, eight political parties signed a memorandum of understanding, outlining 23 focal points for governing Thailand. These included a joint commitment to reducing inequality and promoting equitable economic growth. The Move Forward Party is particularly recognised for its opposition to monopolies, aiming to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), commented on the party’s policies, saying, “The party has some good policies, but the question is whether it can translate them into action.” He added that the Move Forward Party and its allies face a challenging task, as the issue of inequality has been deeply rooted in Thailand’s economy for many years. Kriengkrai also noted that the new administration would find it difficult to deal with monopolies, as well as the obstacles it would face within the country’s bureaucratic system. Udom Kanmuang, a restaurant owner, and his wife Noi celebrated their recent lottery win of 24 million baht with a grand ceremony honouring ‘Por Pu Sian Anan Nakarat’, a respected figure in Thai folklore. The couple believes their good fortune resulted from their daily prayers to this mythical figure before the lottery draw on May 29, 2023. Following their successful claim of the winnings, Udom and Noi organised a special ceremony dedicated to ‘Por Pu Sian Anan Nakarat’ with offerings and prayers. Employees of their restaurant, ‘Ban Por Kamnan Seafoods,’ and nearby villagers also attended the event, reports Khaosod. Udom revealed that while many people knew they had purchased lottery tickets based on the number they used during parliamentary elections, fewer knew about the couple’s belief in ‘Por Pu Sian Anan Nakarat’. Noi would pray daily to their statue in their restaurant’s pond around 11am, asking for their family to win the lottery.
