  2. CHIANG MAI (NNT) - China has indicated its willingness to continue negotiations with Thailand on a new giant panda for Chiang Mai Zoo following the recent passing of Lin Hui, which had been the beloved star attraction at the zoo for two decades. Atthaporn Srihayrun, Director of the Zoological Parks Organisation, confirmed that an autopsy conducted by the Giant Panda Research and Conservation Center in China’s Sichuan province found that Thailand had provided exceptional care to Lin Hui, surpassing the required standards throughout her stay at Chiang Mai Zoo. The autopsy, jointly conducted by the Thai Forest Department and the Giant Panda Research and Conservation Center, concluded that Lin Hui’s passing was due to old age, dispelling any lingering doubts regarding the cause of her death. Atthaporn noted that China’s statement can be interpreted as a signal that negotiations for another panda are not off the table, emphasizing that any such discussions would need to occur at the government level. Despite the autopsy findings, Thailand remains obligated to compensate China with 15 million baht for the loss of Lin Hui. The panda was initially sent to Chiang Mai Zoo on October 12th, 2003, serving as a goodwill ambassador between the two nations. Atthaporn further revealed that an animal of equal rarity and value would eventually inhabit Lin Hui’s enclosure at Chiang Mai Zoo. As Thailand and China maintain a positive and ongoing relationship in wildlife conservation, hope remains for the acquisition of a new giant panda to continue promoting bilateral cooperation and enhancing bilateral conservation efforts. 4. A Thai woman and her boyfriend questioned the justice system in Thailand after a Bangkok taxi driver’s rape sentence was reduced from six years to only three years. The victim suffered both physical and mental health damage as a consequence of the sexual assault. The victim’s boyfriend shared the story about his girlfriend on Facebook on Thursday, May 11. He disclosed that his girlfriend was raped by a Grab taxi driver and the rapist was imprisoned for only three years because he confessed and it was his first crime. The victim’s boyfriend expressed his profound disappointment, asserting that such a light sentence hardly reflects the severity of the crime committed. The female victim, whose identity will be protected under the alias A, spoke to KhaoSod after her story went viral on Thai social media. A revealed that she hung out with her friend in the Thonglor neighbourhood of Bangkok one night on November 30 last year. Her boyfriend could not pick her up because he was drinking with friends, so she decided to take a taxi home. A explained that she booked a taxi via the Grab application and the taxi that picked her up was a green-yellow taxi car with a registration number 1มค8199. She sent the detail of the taxi driver to her boyfriend and notified him that she was on the way home before falling asleep in the cab. When she woke up, A noticed that the driver was taking her in the opposite direction of her intended destination. Growing concerned, she questioned the driver about the unfamiliar route. To her utter shock, the driver responded… “I’m taking you to a love hotel.” By Petch Petpailin Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/outrage-as-thai-rape-sentence-slashed-in-half-raising-questions-about-justice-system -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 6. Thailand experienced a slight decline of 0.13% in car production in April compared to the previous year, with a total of 117,636 units produced, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). This decrease was primarily due to a drop in truck production. However, the country witnessed a significant surge in auto exports during the same month, owing to a low base in the previous year. In April, domestic car sales saw a 6.14% year-on-year decrease, following an 8.37% drop in March. Surapong Paisitpattanapong, a spokesperson for the automotive industry division at the FTI, attributed this decline to stricter loans for trucks as interest rates increased. On the other hand, car exports experienced a significant boost, rising 43.53% from a year earlier, largely due to the low base recorded in the previous year. This followed a 4.84% increase in March. In comparison, car production in March had seen a 4.16% year-on-year growth. Thailand serves as a regional hub for vehicle production and export for several leading car manufacturers, including Toyota and Honda, reported Bangkok Post. 7. MFP leader promises reasonable minimum wage increase without economic damage Coalition MOU signed, image via LinkedIn Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat recently assured that a coalition government under his leadership would not immediately raise the minimum daily wage to 450 baht but would ensure a reasonable increase without causing damage to industry or the economy. Limjaroenrat, the party’s prime ministerial candidate, made this promise during a meeting with representatives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). 8. Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat recently assured that a coalition government under his leadership would not immediately raise the minimum daily wage to 450 baht but would ensure a reasonable increase without causing damage to industry or the economy. Limjaroenrat, the party’s prime ministerial candidate, made this promise during a meeting with representatives of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). The proposed increase to a 450-baht minimum wage was a component of the MFP’s election pledges. Limjaroenrat stated that his party aims to raise the minimum daily wage to 450 baht, but they would first need to discuss a new rate with their coalition allies, who had planned different increments. “I confirm it won’t be a sharp increase that will shock the system. We agree that the wage increase must be based on economic growth, inflation, and the efficiency of workers,” Limjaroenrat said. Currently, the minimum daily wage in Bangkok is 353 baht, while workers in Chon Buri receive 354 baht a day. Workers in other provinces receive less. To ease the impact of the wage increase, Limjaroenrat’s government would help employers, particularly SMEs, through tax reductions and measures to boost business liquidity, like those introduced by the former Yingluck Shinawatra administration. “I will listen to opinions from all involved this week and discuss the feedback with coalition partners, such as the Pheu Thai Party, which also supports a wage hike. We have to decide on a proper rate,” Limjaroenrat said. 10. Thai cannabis sellers gave their thoughts on the Move Forward Party-led coalition’s plan to regulate and redesignate cannabis as a narcotic. In clause 17 of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat, who also leads the coalition that is likely set to form Thailand’s next government, declared the return of marijuana to the controlled narcotic list, with regulations in place to monitor and ensure the medical benefits of marijuana usage. This caused conflicting thoughts within Thai society regarding the clarity of the plant’s legal status. Some of Thailand’s estimated thousands of cannabis shop operators like Nadgan@Pattaya came out to express his disagreement with the decision stating that marijuana has more benefits than drawbacks. 14. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s football association has suspended several players and staff members from a national youth team following brawls during their Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) final against Indonesia in Cambodia last week. The association said in a statement that a coach, goalkeeper and two staffers were suspended for one year while two other players received a six-month ban. The statement added that the incident had a "detrimental effect" on the image of Thais and Thai football. The first brawl was sparked when the referee blew his whistle close to full time and Indonesia’s players and coaches celebrated thinking they had won the game 2-1. The whistle was in fact for a free kick, from which Yotsakorn Burapha scored an equalizer that triggered violent clashes between the two benches. Indonesia went on to win the Under-23 match 5-2 after extra time, with Thailand reduced to eight players and Indonesia to 10 after four red cards were issued. 18. Officers from Chiang Saen Police Station in the northern province of Chiang Rai arrested four suspects for posing as high-ranking police officers and attempting to bribe the police with 350,000 baht in exchange for the release of four Chinese nationals who illegally entered the country. The situation unfolded after officers from Chiang Saen Police Station apprehended a Thai national along with four Chinese people at the border at the Golden Triangle on Friday, May 19 after they illegally entered Thailand. After the arrest, a Thai woman named Tai contacted the police and requested the release of the Chinese nationals. Soon after, another person, a Thai man named Tong, contacted the officer over the same case. Tong claimed that he was a police officer working closely with the Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police (RTP), Torsak Sukvimol. Officers reported the incident to the Chiang Saen Police Station superintendent and then asked the two people to meet at the police station. On the appointed date, Tai and a man named Soonchai visited the police station and offered a 350,000 baht bibe in exchange for the release. After the officers pretended to agree, Tai went back to her car to get the money and came back with another man named Sarawut. As soon as the illegal actions became evident, the officers then moved in to make the arrests. Tai, Tong, Soonchai, and Sarawut were arrested along with the seizure of the 350,000 baht bribe, 450,000 baht found in the vehicle, the car, eight mobile phones, one walkie-talkie, and two counterfeit police uniforms. 20. A man searching for wild mushrooms discovered a corpse wearing a high schooler’s gym shirt in a forest in Chanthaburi province in central Thailand today. Officers at Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station were informed that a local man found the body of a man wearing a gym shirt from a famous high school in a ditch in the forest in Moo 14, Khlong Narai subdistrict, Mueang district. Police travelled to the scene with rescue workers and forensic doctors from Prapokklao Hospital. About 200 metres from the main road, police found the body of a man in a ditch expected to have died three to four days prior. Next to his body, police found a rope knotted into a noose which they confiscated as evidence. The deceased was wearing black shorts and a blue high school gym shirt embroidered with a surname, so the police made a phone call to the school. Much to the police’s dismay, staff at the school informed them that the shirt’s owner – a high school student – was very much alive. The 73 year old former abbot had been expelled from the temple by the villagers on February 19, due to inappropriate behaviour, financial mismanagement, and alleged misconduct with female devotees in a washroom. The villagers demanded a review of the punishment as they believed the former abbot’s actions were unacceptable. In response, the district chief, Sophon Pariyattivithan, set up a committee to investigate the three main concerns: the former abbot being in the washroom with female devotees, viewing porn DVDs, and financial mismanagement. The authorities in the Buriram area responded to the request in order to ensure the safety of the hosts and guests. Yesterday, the Buriram Highway Police rescue unit received a notification from a family residing in Nong Bot in the Nang Rong district of Buriram province. The family requested assistance in moving their father’s body who had passed away from a geriatric illness to Wat Nong Thonglim temple for a religious ceremony. They were worried that hosting the funeral at their home might be hazardous due to a large wild bee hive that had settled on a mango tree near their house about two months ago, which occasionally caused disturbance to the family members.
