Jelly blubbers, a kind of jellyfish, have returned to a river in Songkhla province in southern Thailand after disappearing for more than three years. Aerial photos reveal jelly blubbers (Catostylus mosaicus) in their masses floating in the Khlong Bang Rieng River in Bang Riang subdistrict, Khuan Niang district, which locals say is a rare natural phenomenon. Normally, jelly blubbers reside in the sea, not freshwater. The reason they can survive is that seawater from the Gulf of Thailand enters the river on occasion. The jellyfish started flooding into the river about a week ago after not showing up for three years. In the years the phenomenon happens, it usually occurs in April, but can vary by one or two months. The Fa Sang team, a social activism group, collaborated with local business owners and volunteers from the public sector to organise the activity, “Kayaking, garbage collecting, and jellyfish.” By leah Caption: Photos via ThaiRath Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/jelly-blubbers-return-to-southern-thailand-river-after-3-years -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The deputy director-general of the Excise Department stated that the department’s liquor policy is in line with the Move Forward Party‘s Progressive Liquor Act. The proposed Act aims to liberalise liquor production, allowing both small and large producers to enter the market. Kriengkrai Pattanaporn explained that the proposal is consistent with the department’s policy, and there would be no objections if the party forms a government and passes the law. Previously, liquor producers were categorised as either community producers or large producers. However, an amendment to ministerial regulations for liquor and beer production approved in November 2022 allows small enterprises to upgrade to medium-sized producers. In Thailand, small manufacturers have a production rate of 5 horsepower (hp) or less, while medium-sized producers have a rate of 5-50hp, and large manufacturers exceed 50hp. There are thousands of small, community-based producers in the country. Since the amendment, only one small producer has applied for a licence to upgrade to a medium-sized manufacturer. A former security guard was arrested for attempting to steal gold worth US$76,600 with a fake gun from a popular gold store in a Bang Khae shopping mall in Bangkok. Police Colonel Ponganun Klaiklueng, together with other officers, arrested the 35 year old suspect, Nitinant, in Nonthaburi. The man was found in possession of 71 baht of gold, valued at approximately US$76,600, a fake gun, and a white Toyota Corolla. During the initial investigation, the suspect admitted to previously having worked as a security guard but had recently been laid off and needed an income. He planned to use a counterfeit firearm to rob the gold store, scoping out various locations before choosing the target in Bang Khae’s Lotus shopping centre. The suspect in this case had visited several other stores but ultimately decided on the one in Bang Khae due to its open space and lack of glass doors or stainless steel cages. A 93 year old lottery winner accused her granddaughter of stealing her winning lottery tickets worth 12 million baht. The accused woman denied all allegations. The alleged lottery winner, Jee Chaowangyen, filed a complaint with Nong Prue Police Station in the central province of Kanchanaburi that her granddaughter, 53 year old Saengthong Sri-atcha, stole two winning lottery tickets worth 12 million baht from her. During an interview with several news agencies, Saengthong tried to prove her innocence to the journalists. She swore to a spirit house in front of her accommodation that she did not steal lottery tickets from Jee. Saengthong explained that Jee visited her at 5pm on May 2 and asked her to help verify the result of three lottery tickets. The lottery numbers on the three tickets ended with 599 and 609 which did not win any prizes. Saengthong claimed that she checked only the three-digit prize and did not check the jackpot prize because she did not know how to check. Then, she returned the three tickets to Jee. However, Jee came back to her house three days later and accused her of stealing her jackpot prizes, leading to ongoing arguments between the families. Saengthong continued explaining that Jee kept coming to her house and accusing her. Many locals in the community also kept asking her about the issue which made her feel uncomfortable. A Thai monk disappeared from a temple in the Isaan province of Loei to go on a pilgrimage and hasn’t been seen for over a month. The mother of the 40 year old monk, Sarawut “Yod” Larbpho, believes that her son has been murdered. She is convinced after the soul of her monk son possessed her body to tell the story. Yod’s mother, Dokmai Larbpho, says her son has been a devoted monk for over two decades. Although his family home is in Nakhon Panom province, he relocated to the Tham Pha Dam Santi Dham Temple in the Loei province on July 13 last year reported ThaiRath. Dokmai told the media that she received a call from a fellow monk at the temple on April 25, stating that her son had embarked on a pilgrimage the day before, on April 24. Concerned about his destination, she asked about his son’s destination, but the monk said he did not know. Dokmai said she tried to contact Yod but was unable to reach him. She was curious and felt that her son would tell her if he had the pilgrimage plan. Dokmai revealed that her last conversation with Yod occurred at the beginning of April when he asked for 3,000 baht from her. Dokmai claimed that the abbot, Jandee Thanajantho, and another monk at the temple named Buarian, denied her permission to visit the temple and search for Yod. Dokmai believes her son has been murdered and his body is hidden inside the temple. She said she dreamt about it so, filed a complaint at Na Duang Police Station on Saturday, May 21. Residents in Phayao province in northern Thailand are reaping the benefits of collecting wild mushrooms known as Hed Torb or Hed Por at the start of the rainy season, after prices rose to 830 baht (US$24) per kilogram. Today, residents and villagers from the Thung Nong and Chiang Muan areas travelled to several forests in the area to take advantage of the price increase and began to harvest the mushrooms for consumption and sale. Known for their round shape, Hed Torb mushrooms vary in size and can be found in forested areas tucked under the soil. Locals use a rake or stick to scrape the surface of the ground and underneath fallen leaves to find the mushrooms. When young, the mushrooms are known to have a delicious taste, resulting in the price surge to US$24 per kilogram. They are in demand by customers, regular consumers, and market traders. These mushrooms are only available for consumption during the early rainy season and can only be found once a year.
