Photo via Freepik Investment in Thailand experienced a significant surge in the first quarter of the year, with a 77% year-on-year increase to 185.7 billion baht, primarily driven by 397 project proposals. The Board of Investment (BoI) revealed that South Korea emerged as the leading foreign investor during this period. Foreign investment constituted 155.2 billion baht of the total investment, marking a 115% year-on-year growth. Narit Therdsteerasukdi, secretary-general of the BoI, said… “South Korean investors were ranked first, with investment worth 31.4 billion baht.” Singapore came in second with 29.7 billion baht, followed by China with 25 billion baht, and Japan with 24.7 billion baht. The rise in investment value has been attributed to the easing of pandemic restrictions and the government’s decision to fully reopen the country for foreign business people. Furthermore, numerous international companies have opted to relocate their production facilities to Thailand to circumvent the impact of geopolitical conflicts. IEAT Governor Veeris Ammarapala stated that foreign investors are expected to understand the evolving political landscape in Thailand, including the transition towards a Move Forward Party-led coalition government. At a recent industry forum, Ammarapala said… “Investors believe investment policies in Thailand will not change.” Investors are eager for the new government to be established promptly, as it is crucial for maintaining business confidence. The IEAT anticipates an increase in investment in Thailand in the second half of the year, partially driven by foreign investors seeking to invest in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to mitigate the impact of geopolitical conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and China-Taiwan tensions. BANGKOK ( NNT) - The Department of Sericulture is hosting the annual International Sericulture Commission (ISC) meeting, bringing together representatives from six countries to discuss strategies for the international development of the sericulture industry. The conference, scheduled for May 21-28, is also set to see the establishment of World Silk Day as proposed by Thailand. Led by Prakob Phaophong, Director-General of the Department of Sericulture, and Sutira Pholcharoen, an agricultural specialist and silk product development expert, Thailand welcomed delegates from India, Romania, Bangladesh, Uganda, Japan and relevant local representatives. This marks the fifth time that Thailand has hosted the ISC meeting, reflecting its commitment to the growth of the sericulture sector. The week-long meeting covers a wide range of topics, including ISC activities for the previous year, progress on the Make The Label Count (MTLC) campaign, ISC training programs, silk standard testing and grading, and Thailand’s proposal to designate August 12 as World Silk Day. In addition to the conference, the delegates are participating in field visits and study tours from May 22-28. These visits include interactions with agricultural groups in Chachoengsao province, exploring textile and product manufacturing groups, and visiting exhibition centers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The delegates will also have the opportunity to visit Chul Thai Silk Co Ltd and sericulture industrial farmers in Phetchabun province. The International Sericultural Commission (ISC), an intergovernmental organization registered with the United Nations, was established in 1960 with the goal of promoting scientific, economic and related activities in the field of sericulture. Currently headquartered in Bangalore, India, the ISC provides members with the opportunity to present research findings at the World Sericulture Congress held every three years. By proposing World Silk Day and fostering international collaboration, Thailand aims to promote the rich heritage and economic potential of the silk sector, ensuring its sustainable growth for decades to come. Safety Measures at Tham Luang Cave Implemented Ahead of July Reopening CHIANG RAI (NNT) - The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has announced the implementation of safety measures in preparation for the reopening of Chiang Rai’s Tham Luang Cave in July. The cave gained global attention in 2018 when 12 young Wild Boars football players and their coach were trapped inside for 18 days due to flooding, ultimately leading to a successful rescue operation. Officials including Atthaphon Charoenchansa, Director-General of the Marine and Coastal Resources Department; Chaiwat Limlikhit-aksorn, Director of the National Park Office; Chutidech Kamonnachanut, Director of the Conservation Area Administration Office 15 Chiang Rai; and Vernon Unsworth, a British cave diver who played a vital role in the 2018 rescue mission, are scheduled to visit the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non-National Park this weekend. Currently, only the exhibition zone and the area in front of the cave are accessible to the public. Starting in July, the first cave chamber, which stretches approximately 150 meters, will be opened to visitors. Each visiting group will be limited to a maximum of 25 people, with each round of exploration lasting 30 minutes. To manage the flow of tourists, authorities have established a daily limit of 16 rounds, permitting up to 400 visitors to enter the first chamber each day. For the second chamber, only four groups consisting of 15 individuals will be granted access on a daily basis. To secure entry, applications must be submitted at least one week in advance. The third chamber will be reserved exclusively for researchers and experts, who are required to submit a letter to the department at least 30 days prior to their visit. The implementation of these safety measures aims to ensure the preservation of Tham Luang Cave while also allowing limited public access for sightseeing and exploration. By carefully managing the number of visitors and controlling the duration of each visit, authorities seek to maintain a balance between safety and providing an opportunity for people to experience the cave’s natural wonders. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has approved a 345-day extension for the Pink Line monorail project, the third such extension to be granted. Department Highways Director-General Sarawut Songsivilai, who also serves as MRTA board chairman, announced August 2024 as the project’s estimated completion date instead of July 2023 as previously stated. According to Sarawut, the MRTA board passed the deadline extension approval on May 18 for the initial 34.5 kilometers of the line. The impact of the pandemic was cited by the contractor, Northern Bangkok Monorail (NBM), as the main reason for seeking the contract extension was the impact of the pandemic. Initially, the MRTA extended the project deadline by a year, setting the completion target for September 2022. NBM later requested a second extension of 290 days, pushing the new deadline to July of this year. As of the previous month, the Pink Line’s construction progress stood at 96.43%. The monorail project spans 30 stations, connecting Khae Rai in Nonthaburi to the Min Buri area in eastern Bangkok. With a value of 53.4 billion baht, the project will intersect the Orange Line in Min Buri and link with the Green Line at Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Station.
