  1. Mae Hong Son Airport in northern Thailand became a ghost town after Nok Air scrapped the only remaining commercial route to the airport last month. But much to the delight of local tourism operators, Bangkok Airways is planning to revive flights to the province. Bangkok Airways is looking to start flying between Bangkok and Mae Hong Son via Lampang thrice weekly, beginning as soon as August 2, 2023, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). The airport services the popular backpacking town of Pai. Nok Air can no longer fly the Don Mueang – Mae Hong Son route because the airline is bidding farewell to its fleet of Q400 aircraft (86-seat turboprops) and swapping them for Boeing 787-800 jets (189 seaters). Senior President of the Mae Hong Son Chamber of Commerce, Chanakhet Boonyakhan, said that a 737-800 jet could land on the runway at Mae Hong Son Airport, which is 30 metres by 2000 metres. After all, Thai Airways used to fly a 747-400 aircraft, another large jet, to Mae Hong Son with no problem. However, it is not cost-effective to service the route with a 189-seat aircraft. The 80-seat flights are often full, but the demand is not higher than that, said Chanakhet. There should be at least 100 people on the flight to make it cost-effective. 5. Photo Courtesy of Phuket News A tragic incident occurred yesterday in Pa Khlok, Phuket, when a nine-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide by hanging after being denied permission to join her sister on a trip to a local waterfall. The child’s body was discovered at her family home by her grandfather. Upon finding the girl’s body hanging from a clothesline tied between a coconut tree and a house pillar, her grandfather immediately sought to cut the nylon rope with scissors. However, by the time he managed to do so, the girl was already motionless. Unable to help the girl by himself due to his disability, the grandfather called for assistance from neighbours, who moved the girl’s body inside the house and contacted emergency services and the girl’s parents, reported Phuket News. The girl’s grandfather informed the police that she had been extremely upset about not being allowed to accompany her older sister to the waterfall, which is believed to have led to her tragic decision. Thalang Police Chief Col. Pisit Chuenphet and his fellow officers, along with a forensic doctor from Vachira Phuket Hospital, officers from the Pa Klok Municipal Rescue Unit, an EMS unit from Thalang Hospital, and rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation, all arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. 7. Photo via ThaiRath A 62 year old Thai man died after taking half a Viagra pill in a love hotel in the central province of Suphan Buri. A woman in the room with the man believed to be a sex worker, fled the scene after he died. A member of the hotel staff discovered the dead body of the man yesterday evening and reported the incident to officers from Tung Kork Police Station. The man was found lying naked and dead on the bed. A box of condoms and half a Viagra pill were found near his body. His motorcycle, a red Honda Wave, and other belongings remained at the scene. A hotel employee revealed that the deceased and a woman checked in at about 4pm. They agreed to rent the room for only one hour. At 5pm, the employee visited the room to inform the couple that their time was up, only to find the man motionless on the bed. The dead man’s friend, a Som Tam seller, reported to police that his friend told him that he was meeting a woman at the hotel and could the woman borrow his motorcycle to get there. He agreed but was curious why his friend had not come back after the alleged sex worker returned his vehicle. So, he went to check on him at the hotel and discovered the tragic news. Officers deduced that the man likely arranged a sexual encounter with the woman at the love hotel and ingested a Viagra beforehand. The woman then fled, frightened she would be charged with his murder. The victim, Nam Oi, led reporters to the scene of the crime, which occurred yesterday, Wednesday, May 17. At approximately 5.30am the 47 year old factory worker was travelling by motorcycle to a beauty salon to have her hair and make-up done. Accompanied by her husband driving the bike, she carried a bag with cash and gold jewellery (two gold bracelets and two necklaces), which she intended to present as a dowry at her son’s wedding later that day. Nam told police that while returning home after her make-up appointment, a criminal on a black motorcycle attempted to snatch her bag. As a result, her husband’s motorcycle fell, leaving Nam with a broken right arm and various other injuries. The robber escaped, and although her husband pursued the bag snatcher, he was unable to catch him. She said… “I was shocked and saddened by the incident. 15. Deputy Prime Minister Wisanu Krea-ngam has advised the Move Forward party to use “diplomatic means” to woo support, especially among senators, for approval for its leader Pita Limjaroenrat to become prime minister, instead of resorting to harsh criticism or condemnation. Speaking to the media on Thursday morning, the government’s top legal expert said that that the potential coalition line up, led by Move Forward, which now has about 313 votes in the Lower House, can become a very solid government, but they still need the support of senators for the appointment of its prime ministerial candidate and, again, for constitutional amendments. He reiterated his earlier advice that sweet talking and extending an olive branch will overcome all the obstacles, saying there is no need to rush as they have about three months, 60 days for the endorsement of all the MPs-elect and another 30 days for the formation of the government. 17. After every big earthquake, major aftershocks ensue. A Pheu Thai landslide would have made headlines, but unpredictability would not have been as prevalent. Move Forward’s wham-bam victory means a lot more things are difficult to forecast now. Here are some of the foremost: Will Thaksin Shinawatra keep his homecoming pledge? This is the biggest question. The promised return to Thailand is virtually tied to how Pheu Thai performed in the election. A gracious arrival without him being immediately put in jail has to coincide with an epic Pheu Thai resurgence only, with public sentiment euphorically and unequivocally in favour of the party. 21. Photo via KhaoSod Thailand’s Tourist Police have banned sex workers from selling services on the beach in Pattaya. Last night, Tourist Police and officers from Pattaya City Police Station headed down to Pattaya Beach and instructed the city’s ladies and ladyboys of the night to move along. The police informed the sex workers that from now on, they are no longer permitted to stand along the beachfront to sell sex services to tourists, reports KhaoSod. If the police find them working there again, they will face heavy fines, warned Pol. Col. Somchai Thiraphatphaisarn. The sex workers were never really permitted to find clientele at the beach since all prostitution is illegal in Thailand. However, the law is actively ignored and rarely enforced in Pattaya – famously the sex capital of the world. Pol. Col. Somchai said the crackdown on beachfront prostitution followed orders from deputy police chief Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn to be more rigorous in preventing crimes against tourists. 23. PHOTO via Siam News A 61 year-old construction worker from a village in Subsomotod, Beung Sam Pan District, Phetchabun province, won a staggering 12 million baht in the lottery after following the advice of a dream. Samanee Plookjai purchased the winning tickets based on the dream’s suggestions. The Thai grandmother plans to use the money for her five grandchildren’s tuition fees, Sanook reported. Samanee had dreamt of an elderly person instructing her to take eight eggs and rice to an altar. Based on this dream, she deciphered the winning numbers. The older person in the dream represented the number 9, the number of eggs represented the number 8, and the circular shape of the eggs denoted the number 0. With these interpretations, she purchased two lottery tickets with the number 132903. Her main hope was to win the last three digits, which would have been sufficient to cover the tuition fees for her five grandchildren. However, to her surprise, she hit the jackpot and secured the first prize in the lottery, worth 12 million baht. Samanee intends to use some of the winnings to donate toward the construction of a temple, provide for her children, and settle her outstanding debts.
