  16. Photo via KhaoSod The Governor of Lampang ordered the Chae Hom District Chief to investigate a potential election violation yesterday after photos circulated of a monk standing at a polling station in Lampang province in northern Thailand. In Thailand, ordained Buddhist monks are not eligible to meddle in politics or vote in any election. Photos of the monk sparked panic that this rule had been violated at Polling Station 10 in the Chae Hom district. Chae Hom District Chief, Chan Judkong, hurried down to the polling station to find that the monk in the photo wasn’t a monk at all, but a man named Veerapong [surname withheld], reports KhaoSod. It turns out that Veerapong was not wearing real Buddhist robes but a saffron-coloured dress made to emulate a Thai monk’s outfit. He said he wore it to cast his vote to create content for social media. Chief Chan said that he couldn’t find any violation of Thailand’s election regulations in Veerapong’s outfit choice so he didn’t bother informing the police. The liberal Move Forward Party have taken the lead, followed by the populist Pheu Thai Party, amid murmurings of a coalition. This would end nearly 10 years of military-backed rule in the kingdom. Yesterdays election is the first time a Thaksin Shinawatra-backed party (formerly Thai Rak Thai, now Pheu Thai) has not won the highest number of primary votes in the past 5 elections. However, in order to form the next government and choose their PM, the parties will need the backing of the Senate, many of whom were appointed by the military government. Traditionally the Senate has voted in favour of the junta government, and its members get to decide on who will be the country’s next PM. 23. Voters missing yesterday’s general election should submit reasons by this week BANGKOK (NNT) - Voting is the duty of all Thai citizens above the age of 18. 24. BANGKOK (NNT) - Voting is the duty of all Thai citizens above the age of 18. Those who did not cast their ballots on Sunday are advised to notify local authorities this week. Thai citizens who did not vote in the general election, either in early voting or on election day yesterday, should submit their reasoning to the authorities by 21 May. According to the law, failure to participate in an election is not a legal offense, but it revokes their rights to oppose election results in two years, to hold a political position, and to hold a local administrative position. This two-year period runs immediately after the latest election missed by that person, including the general and local elections. This means the prohibition period applies again if a person fails to participate in any election. To avoid this repercussion, anyone who did not vote in the latest general election is encouraged to submit their reasoning to the relevant officials, either in-person to the district registrar, or by post, on the Smart Vote application, or on the website www.bora.dopa.go.th/all-election.
