BANGKOK (NNT) - Increased travel demand owing to the lifting of Covid restrictions in China and Japan has enabled Thai Airways Plc. to earn 41 billion baht in revenue in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, Thai Airways creditors will consider the company’s plan to merge with Thai Smile Airways next week. Thai Airways Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri revealed that the company and its subsidiaries had a total revenue of 41.507 billion baht in the first quarter of 2023. This was a jump from the revenue figure in the same period of the previous year when 11.181 billion baht of revenue was generated. Mr. Chai said the main factor for the revenue growth was the increase in flights on popular routes such as those to and from Japan and China. He said that in the second quarter, Thai Airways will take delivery of 2 out of 11 new Airbus A350-900 aircraft ordered under the company’s aircraft procurement plan. The new aircraft will primarily serve routes to China, accommodating heightened travel demand in the Chinese market. The frequency of flights from Guangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai will be increased further. The company also plans to raise the frequency of flights to European destinations, including to the UK and to Frankfurt, Germany. Mr. Chai disclosed the European market remains a key revenue generator for Thai Airways, contributing about 40% of the carrier’s revenue. Mr. Chai said he expects Thai Airways to carry about 9 million passengers in the first half of 2023 and earn about 130 billion baht of revenue. The CEO also spoke of the merger between Thai Smile Airways and Thai Airways. He made known that results from the study into the merger proposal have already been yielded. Thai Airways is now awaiting endorsement of the merger from its creditors, to whom the results will be presented next week. Mr. Chai said a merger will improve assets management and the efficiency of aircraft use. He said a Thai Smile aircraft currently flies for 9 hours per day and this would increase to 12-13 hours with the merger, resulting in a 20% cost reduction. Thai Q1 Growth Exceeds Forecast BANGKOK (NNT) - Data released on Monday (15 May) showed Thailand’s economy expanded faster than expected in the first quarter due to a recovery in tourism, even as investors brace for political uncertainty after Sunday’s elections. BANGKOK (NNT) - Data released on Monday (15 May) showed Thailand’s economy expanded faster than expected in the first quarter due to a recovery in tourism, even as investors brace for political uncertainty after Sunday’s elections. The nation’s economic recovery gathered steam in recent months as Chinese visitors returned. The revival of the sector, which accounts for 11-12% of its gross domestic product (GDP), is expected to help offset the impact from declining exports. Thailand’s state planning agency reiterated its outlook for a 2.7%-3.7% GDP growth in 2023, versus 2.6% last year, saying the post-election atmosphere should be kept positive to build investor confidence. Data from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) indicated that Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy grew 2.7% in the January-March period from a year earlier, versus a 1.4% growth in the previous quarter. On a quarterly basis, GDP rose a seasonally adjusted 1.9% from a revised 1.1% contraction in the fourth quarter of 2022. Economists in a Reuters poll had expected GDP to expand 2.3% year-on-year in January-March and 1.7% quarter-on-quarter. Thailand’s political heavyweights were set for an intense round of deal-making on Monday after the election that delivered major gains for opposition parties, but with no clear indication of alliances taking shape. Several analysts echoed the view, saying investors were likely to stay on the sidelines as they wait for a new government and clarity on its policies. Meanwhile, the NESDC maintained its forecast for 2023 foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand at 28 million. The country beat its tourism target in 2022 with 11.15 million visitors. Pre-pandemic 2019 saw a record of nearly 40 million foreign tourists, who spent 1.91 trillion baht (US$56 billion). The NESDC also kept its 2023 forecasts for goods exports to drop 1.6% and headline inflation to be between 2.5% and 3.5%. Why the idealistic boy won, and why he has to keep his feet on the ground A combination of the Thaksin factor, appeal of a youthful image and repellence of old-style politics has contributed to one of the biggest surprises in the modern Thai political history. A combination of the Thaksin factor, appeal of a youthful image and repellence of old-style politics has contributed to one of the biggest surprises in the modern Thai political history. Signs of a Move Forward election triumph were always there, but they were probably misinterpreted in 2019 when the better-than-expected performance of the Future Forward Party coincided with the dissolution of the Thai Raksa Chart Party, and were downplayed again before Sunday’s election due to the rumbling talks about a Pheu Thai landslide. Sunday’s results were a surprise, yes, but it was a surprise because many things were either underestimated or ignored. Pol. Lt. Col. Phirom Yosalai, an inspector at Mae Ping Police Station, said the woman is expected to have died from an underlying condition because the “blood” stains on the bed reported by police turned out to be feces. The “signs of struggle” that police found likely arose from the woman attempting to crawl to the bathroom before she died, added Pol. Lt. Col. Phirom. Picture courtesy of Sanook with a message in Thai asking if the couple "are they working?" A couple of horny factory workers set tongues wagging on Thai social media after being caught having sex at work in Rayong, East Thailand. The randy factory workers were caught in the throes of passion in the middle of a warehouse while on the clock. A female colleague, far from being shocked or offended, recorded the entire pornographic encounter on video and uploaded it on social media. Unsurprisingly, it soon went viral! The Facebook page ‘Factory Life Watch’ stated… “A factory couple from Rayong couldn’t wait for their shift to end; they passionately made love in the warehouse. A female employee who passed by captured a clip of them. It’s now causing quite a stir.” The incident caused quite a stir among the online community who were quick to voice and share their opinion on the lascivious act, reported Sanook. Some said that the couple demonstrated a lack of respect for their workplace and showed no consideration for their colleagues. Others reckoned that if the couple felt the need to engage in such activity, they should have chosen a more discreet location. The online discussions also discussed possible disciplinary actions the company might take in response to their employees’ conduct. Photo via Channel 7 A Thai teacher and police officers in the central province of Nakhon Pathom rescued a six year old boy from a drug ring after his mother ordered him to deliver narcotics to customers. The mother denied the accusation and insisted that she was just a drug user, not a dealer. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 7 when the Thai teacher noticed the boy walking past his condo and dropping a plastic bag on the floor. When the teacher went to check the bag’s contents, he found three tablets of drugs inside. The teacher reported the incident to the Pho Kaew Police Station and waited at the spot until the boy returned. When the boy came back, the teacher questioned him about the drugs. The boy initially refused to answer but eventually revealed that his mother had ordered him to deliver the drugs to customers. The teacher knew the boy because he lived nearby and used to play with his child. Despite the lack of care, the boy had good manners and spoke to others very nicely. The teacher also revealed that the boy had an older brother who did not have the opportunity to study. Police searched the temple on Monday and have so far confiscated over 76 million baht in cash and gold bars, along with ornaments valued at over 22 million baht. Officers are now assessing other items thought to be worth at least 100 million baht, according to the Coconuts report. The money and other items were found buried in a hillside behind the temple.
