After four years of support from the ruling coalition government, Thailand is expected to vote against the decriminalisation of marijuana in Sunday’s general election. The current free-for-all and weed shops lining the busy tourist streets appears unlikely to continue in the months after the election and a new parliament is settled. Almost all of the political parties involved in the 2023 national election are in favour of returning to the previous policies of marijuana prohibition and confining its use to medicinal purposes only. Only one party is still seeking some sort of policy that would allow and regulate recreational use. The changes in policies comes amid rising concerns over the negative societal impact of an open-slather approach to cannabis use. The decriminalisation has also been botched by a lack of details, leading to a legal vacuum, with no regulations in place covering the recreational use of the drug in Thailand. When Thais go to the polls on Sunday, the challenge is how to help lay the groundwork for a system that can prevent the next election from being held under similar circumstances. It’s a tough ask, but every election presents a fresh hope, no matter how difficult the path remains. The major paradox is there for all to see. It can’t be an election without heroes and villains, and it can’t be an election without everyone wanting to be a hero at the expense of others. It’s the way things are, but it’s not the way things are supposed to be. Campaign posters and other pre-election developments underline an atmosphere that shouldchange after Sunday, or no-holds-barred advertisement by politicians and their supporters will turn democracy completely into a brutal game in which every player does everything necessary and at all costs in order to be the winner. A Hungarian man is facing legal action after he touched a pipefish while he was diving at Pha Ngan Island. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Office told the Phuket Express that a video clip was posted on a YouTube channel this week with the message “Scuba Diving in Paradise, Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand”. The diver was touching a pipefish which is illegal to touch or catch the pipefish by law. The DMCR filed a report to the Koh Pha Ngan Police and the video went viral on Thai social media, with many Thai nationals outraged. Some critics, however, said the diving company or boat operator should have properly warned the man. However, the man was not a tourist and was an ex-pat, the DMCR stated. Photo via Channel 3 A foreign woman sought assistance from locals in Krabi province in the southern region of Thailand after she ran out of money. She is unable to return to her home country, the United States. A cannabis shop owner near Ao Nang Beach in Krabi posted the story of the foreign woman on Facebook yesterday. He said the woman bought cannabis from his shop and urged him to share her story with the police because she wanted to go to Phuket and catch a flight back to the US. The foreigner told the cannabis shop owner that she only had 300 baht cash on her. Apparently, some days she had as little as 40 baht, which she earned from busking nearby the shop. Sometimes, she asked for food from the restaurant in the area. Her sister transferred US$10,000 to her but she says can not withdraw the funds. A member of the cannabis shop staff, 20 year old Cherdsak Boonmark, gave an interview about the foreign woman with Channel 3. He stated that the woman had shown him her wallet, which contained only 20 baht in cash. She asked him for help to go to Phuket and return home. Thailand‘s Department of Medicine is warning partygoers against taking ‘Happy Water,’ a dangerous cocktail of various illicit drugs which has become an “epidemic” in the country’s nightlife scene, reports KhaoSod. Happy Water is made by mixing various drugs into a sweetened drink, typically including ketamine, ecstasy, methamphetamine, diazepam, caffeine, and tramadol all in one, according to the Deputy Director-General of the Department of Medical Services Dr. Manat Phothaphon. Dr. Manat said that when ingested, Happy Water can cause all kinds of psychotropic effects such as stimulating, hallucinogenic, sedative, and depressive depending on the main substance mixed. “[Happy Water] is a fast-spreading epidemic which is very worrying because mixing drugs, or taking high quantities of drugs, especially when mixed with alcohol, can be dangerous to the body or even cause death.” Director of the department’s Princess Mother National Institute on Drug Abuse Treatment (PMNIDAT) Dr. Sarayut Boonchaipanichwatana said that it is becoming more and more popular for revellers to mix several drugs together at once rather than sticking to a single substance.
