The Mae Chan district hospital in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai is operating as normal, even though forest fires are only about 1.5 km away. An evacuation plan is in place in case of an emergency, according to Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong. Although the fires are now under control, he said that smoke remains a pressing problem and additional air purifiers have been installed in hospital wards for the patients, while officials are on guard around the clock to monitor the situation. Air pollution in Chiang Rai is still regarded as health threatening, with PM 2.5 levels being measured at 157 microns in Mueang district, 197 microns in Chiang Khong district and 245 microns in Mae Sai district. Beware of passport scam targeting British nationals in Thailand warns UK Foreign Office The British Foreign Office issued a warning to both UK residents and expats in Thailand about a passport scam that is currently targeting British nationals in the kingdom. The British Foreign Office issued a warning to both UK residents and expats in Thailand about a passport scam that is currently targeting British nationals in the kingdom. Fraudsters are attempting to capitalize on the recent strikes by government workers in the UK, which have caused delays in passport renewals, by promising to bypass the three-month waiting period for a fee. The scam involves fake websites such as UK-renewpassport.net and emails from similar-named sources promising to expedite the passport renewal process through international money transfer systems like Western Union, Pattaya Mail reported. The British Foreign Office is advising British nationals in Thailand who want to renew their passports not to fall into a trap and deal only with authorized application centres in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. The scams in Thailand are similar to those already identified by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) in the UK, where many Brits have been tricked into believing they can get bargain-basement air tickets or cheap foreign holidays. However, in Thailand, the scams appear to target expat Brits who specifically want to renew their passports quickly. The Faculty of Medical Technology at Khon Kaen University has recently developed the third version of its pressure relief bed for patients with pressure sores. Professor Dr. Wichai Eungpinichpong of the faculty said that the outstanding feature of this latest version is that its mattress can spread pressure more evenly, which will help relieve the pressure sores often suffered by bed-ridden patients. The construction cost is estimated at about 10,000 bath each, which will be affordable for many elderly people, said Dr. Wichai, adding that the faculty is ready to share its knowhow with local communities so they can make the beds themselves. Koh Lan Faces Water Shortage as Daily Tourist Arrivals Surge PATTAYA (NNT) - Koh Lan, a well-known tourist destination off the coast of Pattaya, is experiencing a water shortage due to a significant increase in daily visitors. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1292036-koh-lan-faces-water-shortage-as-daily-tourist-arrivals-surge/ -
PATTAYA (NNT) - Koh Lan, a well-known tourist destination off the coast of Pattaya, is experiencing a water shortage due to a significant increase in daily visitors. After over two years of limited tourism due to the pandemic, the number of Thai and foreign tourists visiting the island has risen to approximately 10,000 per day. This influx of tourists has put a strain on the island’s water supply, which receives roughly 300 cubic meters of treated water per day from Eastern Water Resources Development and Management Plc (Eastwater). To cope with the water shortage, business operators on Koh Lan have resorted to purchasing treated water from private suppliers on the mainland, at a cost of 70 to 150 baht per cubic meter. In the short term, Eastwater will be requested to increase the water supply to Koh Lan to 1,000 cubic meters per day to address the issue. According to Manoj Nongyai, the deputy mayor of Pattaya City, officials now plan to revive an old proposal to lay an undersea pipeline that would deliver treated water from the mainland to Koh Lan. The plan had been previously discussed several years ago but had not been implemented. Koh Lan’s water shortage has become a significant issue, with local businesses and residents expressing concern over the situation. The increasing number of tourists, combined with the limited water supply, has highlighted the need for a sustainable solution that can ensure sufficient water supply for Koh Lan’s residents and visitors in the future. Millions of people all over Thailand today are celebrating Songkran with water fights but spare a thought for two men in Hong Kong unfortunate enough to encounter some humourless cops while celebrating the Thai New Year. The pair were arrested by the party-pooping officers for disorderly conduct after they fired water guns at them at a Songkran event on Sunday in Kowloon City, a district that many people call “Little Thailand.” The short-on-humour cops reckoned the fun-loving festival duo used the event as a cover to target law enforcers. Cheung Lok-chuen, a chief inspector in Kowloon City, last night told South China Morning Post (SCMP) that the men, aged 25 and 26, were shooting the water guns at close range at the Songkran Festival. He said… “It was originally a fun event for everyone, but some individuals had ulterior motives to target the police officers who maintained order and other participants at the scene.” Cheung reckons the acts aimed at breaching public peace could have been planned. He added that further arrests were possible and the district crime squad is handling the case. BANGKOK (NNT) - The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has teamed up with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to promote anti-corruption practices that call for cooperation from both the government and the public. NACC President Police General Watcharapol Prasarnrajkit explained that Bangkok is governed under a special administration structure that does not utilize a provincial-level committee mechanism. Nonetheless, the NACC and its office attach significant importance to this special area. The NACC and BMA expressed their appreciation for all Bangkok governors and administrators who prioritize anti-corruption efforts, believing this determination will make Bangkok a modern, transparent and corruption-free city. Meanwhile, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said promoting the involvement of the public and state agencies in preventing and combating corruption remains a top priority. He added that the BMA is ready to cooperate with the NACC office to implement such measures and utilize anti-corruption strategies, including ensuring the effective use of the city’s budget in the future. During the meeting, the NACC and BMA discussed ways to coordinate cooperation in four key areas: driving the development of anti-corruption education programs; evaluating the ethics and transparency of operations; promoting public and government agency involvement; and coordinating responses to complaints related to corruption. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has emphasized that Thailand and its neighboring countries are committed to addressing the escalating issue of transboundary haze. Following a recent trilateral meeting between Thailand, Laos and Myanmar, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai assured the public that senior officials from the three countries will hold detailed discussions on the prevention of burning practices. He stressed that neighboring countries are also facing this common problem and are rushing to take action. Thailand will also share its knowledge on the burning issue by proposing the establishment of small-scale community power plants. When asked about the case of citizens planning to file a lawsuit against the prime minister for failing to resolve the situation, the deputy premier explained that the issue did not arise under the current administration. He noted that it has in fact been a long-standing issue going back 20 years. Minister Don confirmed that the ASEAN bloc is working to address this problem and has been tackling it continuously. He added that the problem was further exacerbated after the pandemic when human activities that contribute to air pollution resumed. The minister also said the government has measures to address the problem, both in the short and long term. The matter will be discussed again at the upcoming ASEAN meeting. PTT and Saudi Company to Invest in Green Hydrogen BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai oil and gas conglomerate PTT Group plans to invest US$7 billion in producing "green" hydrogen with ACWA Power, Saudi Arabia’s leading renewable energy business, with the goal of powering electric vehicles in Southeast Asia. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1292028-ptt-and-saudi-company-to-invest-in-green-hydrogen/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai oil and gas conglomerate PTT Group plans to invest US$7 billion in producing "green" hydrogen with ACWA Power, Saudi Arabia’s leading renewable energy business, with the goal of powering electric vehicles in Southeast Asia. PTT CEO Auttapol Rerkpiboon said the project aims to build a plant in Thailand with a production capacity of 225,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The two companies, together with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), signed a Memorandum of Understanding in November to go forward with the project and the $7 billion investment pledge is a step toward that goal. The PTT CEO said the project aims to promote green hydrogen as a future energy source to generate demand and lead to economies of scale, propelling Thailand to become the green energy supplier in ASEAN. Renewable green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis and stored until it is utilized to power automobiles and industrial machinery. Green hydrogen, as opposed to "brown" and "gray" hydrogen, is produced entirely from renewable energy sources, which generates zero emissions as a result. PTT has pledged to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050, with this investment being one of many different approaches to finding an equilibrium between reducing emissions and remaining profitable. PTT’s net-zero strategy also aligns with the Thai government’s goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065.
