  1. Picture: Srettha Thavisin Facebook Conscription should be replaced with voluntary enlistment to provide economic benefits, according to Srettha Thavisin, prime ministerial candidate for the Pheu Thai Party. Thavisin expressed his disappointment with a particular politician’s staunch support for maintaining conscription in the name of national defence and patriotism. He asserted that compulsory military service is harmful to the economy, as it diverts skilled professionals from the workforce for an extended period. According to Thavisin, both individuals and the country suffer losses: individuals are unable to contribute their skills and expertise, while the country experiences a shortage of personnel capable of promoting economic growth and making constructive contributions. Conscription, he contended, results in a domestic brain drain, and the military should devise strategies to increase voluntary enlistment to render the process non-compulsory. However, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Prime Minister’s Office Minister, insisted that conscription must continue, although adjustments may be made to the proportion of voluntary recruits. The navy has allocated designated areas in barracks where parties can campaign for votes. Candidates from various parties will be given equal space and time to conduct their campaigns at open venues on the grounds, such as markets, according to Royal Thai Navy spokesperson Admiral Pokkrong Monthatpalin. 3. Caretaker Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who also holds the position of defence minister, has emphasised his commitment to offering army conscripts chances for educational, occupational, and character development, in order to become contributing members of society. Sharing his thoughts with the press following a Cabinet gathering yesterday, PM Prayut expressed satisfaction upon discovering that certain areas of the military had witnessed a higher number of volunteer enlistments than necessary this year. He reiterated the crucial role that enlisted personnel play in every level of the military hierarchy, from squads, platoons, and companies to battalions, in combination with non-commissioned and commissioned officers. Nevertheless, he emphasised the importance of proper training and mentioned that soldiers could serve in 16 diverse areas within the military. The 69 year old PM, who served as the commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army from 2010 to 2014 before orchestrating a coup in May 2014 that resulted in the overthrow of the Pheu Thai Party, said… Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/politics/prayut-conscripted-soldiers-can-benefit-from-opportunities -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-04-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. However, this promising recovery has triggered concerns over the return of so-called “zero-dollar tours”, which are known for their unusually low prices, pre-paid budget accommodation and tours, and little money going to Thai tourism businesses. While these tours have been around for years, they have become particularly problematic over the last decade, causing many issues for the Thailand’s tourism industry and its reputation. These tours are named as such because their package prices start at below cost. Some local tour operators offer these tours to Chinese tourists, seeking to earn a profit by sending groups to local Thai agencies without paying any tour fees. The tourists are then forced to visit places and spend their money on goods and services at a higher price than the market rate, often Chinese owned. 11. BANGKOK (NNT) - Following an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases after the Songkran holidays, the Ministry of Public Health has said it is ready to accommodate potential COVID patients. The ministry has prepared healthcare measures such as medicines, medical supplies and enough hospital beds to handle the situation. Patients who test positive for COVID-19 using antigen tests can register to see a doctor online, inquire about and pay for their medication, and receive free medicine deliveries. There are several applications available for this service, with the “Total Telemed” mobile app accepting all types of COVID patients and the “MorDee”, “Saluber MD”, and “Clicknic” apps accepting non-608 patients. The 608-group of patients refer to those over the age of 60, people with one or more chronic diseases, and pregnant women. Officials will contact patients to confirm their identities, screen and evaluate their initial symptoms, and provide online medical advice for self-care. If necessary, officials may decide to deliver medicines to patients, with some receiving Favipiravir or Molnupiravir depending on their condition and their doctors’ diagnosis. After 48 hours of care, officials will contact the patient again to ask about their symptoms and provide recommendations for self-care. If symptoms worsen during this period, their information will be forwarded to the Department of Disease Control for further treatment. People with disabilities who can communicate online and are not at risk of contracting the virus can also receive care, depending on their diagnosis. This joint effort between the National Health Security Office and digital healthcare providers aims to ensure that COVID patients receive care and medication they need, with free deliveries of medication available in specific areas of Bangkok. 13. BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has emphasized the importance of addressing air pollution in the long run through measures such as reforestation and environmental protection. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other agencies have been working to expand forest areas, based on the Swedish model. He noted that Sweden was able to increase its forest cover from 25% to 75%. This eventually allowed lumber to become one of Sweden’s top exports, making the country the world’s third largest lumber exporter. In addition, the prime minister urged the public to participate in community forest planting and land allocation for trees. Gen Prayut also stressed the need to address traffic and industrial pollution emissions, and warned the public against outdoor burning, which could lead to legal repercussions. He added that the government has taken measures to mitigate the effects of global warming, such as preparing for El Nino. If the effect of El Nino intensifies, it could cause temperatures to rise by at least 0.8 degrees Celsius, with “Super El Nino” causing temperatures to rise 2-3 degrees above average in some areas. The government has so far made preparations for these potential risks and issued orders to responsible agencies to address them.
