BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport has been instructed to address the issue of skyrocketing plane tickets in the short and long term, with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) formulating a five-point strategy to solve the problems impeding the tourism industry’s recovery. According to Deputy Transport Minister Atirat Ratanasate, the ministry has informed Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on the progress as well as future steps to combat soaring ticket prices caused by demand increases after the Covid-19 outbreak. During the meeting, the ministry presented the plan developed by CAAT that includes increasing ground-handling operators, relaxing certain rules, offering incentives for airlines, and implementing a subsidy policy to help airlines fly to less popular destinations in the country. The deputy minister said that the Prime Minister, after hearing these strategies, told officials to proceed with its plan in order to address the problem as soon as possible. Gen Prayut has also ordered CAAT to closely monitor domestic ticket prices and has advised the public to plan their trips ahead of time, especially during holidays, to avoid purchasing expensive tickets. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Culture announced that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has approved the inclusion of the Songkran Festival to its tentative list of Intangible Cultural Heritages (ICH) in December this year. If approved, Songkran will become Thailand’s fourth intangible cultural heritage. The approval for consideration by UNESCO was disclosed by Culture Minister Itthiphol Khunpluem on April 6. The inclusion of the Songkran festival in the ICH tentative list, according to the minister, helps foster a greater appreciation and understanding of Thai culture and promotes the festival as a significant cultural heritage of the country. An intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is a practice, representation, expression, knowledge, or skill, as well as artifacts or cultural property, considered by UNESCO to be part of a place’s cultural heritage. Thailand’s intangible cultural heritages currently include Khon, a dance drama genre, traditional Thai massage, or Nuad Thai, and Nora, which is an acrobatic form of dance theater and improvisational singing from southern Thailand. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. A rogue cop with a gambling addiction was sentenced to 270 years in prison for theft and illegal possession of 160 firearms. He will only serve 50 years as allowed under Thai law. Senior sergeant major Chaowarit Phumkajorn, from Pak Kret Police Station in Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, was arrested in October in the Isaan province of Nong Khai after reportedly selling 160 police guns to pay off his gambling debts. The investigation concluded yesterday, with 23 suspects arrested and charged for receiving stolen goods, while eight senior officers are set to be punished for dereliction of duty, reported Bangkok Post. Deputy national police chief, Pol Gen Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, said the rogue cop’s arrest led to the arrests of 23 others who pawned, sold or bought the guns. Most were security guards for gambling dens and the gamblers themselves. Big Joke said… “Eight police will be punished for dereliction of duty. They range from former station chiefs who served between 2014-2022 to active inspectors. A committee has been set up to handle the disciplinary investigation. “As for the stolen firearms, police managed to retrieve 64 but 96 remain unaccounted for. Police believe they were sold in neighbouring countries. “Sixty-three guns are in the state’s inventory, with one returned to a local station.
