Picture courtesy of opengovasia Thailand is looking toward artificial intelligence (AI) to boost economic growth and the kingdom’s vision to become the globe’s fifth-largest economy by 2027. The government underlines AI as a major tool to boost its economy to automate processes, reduce costs, and increase productivity, all of which can help to increase economic growth. AI can be used to provide more accurate predictions and insights into markets, which can lead to better decision–making and overall efficiency. These themes were explored at the First Open AI Hack Fest recently. Nattapat Aikpol, the head of the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), is leading the charge and is convinced that AI will significantly increase productivity and supplement human labour across multiple industries, reported opengovasia. Thailand chips away at US trade deficit with 62% increase in chip market exports The United States has been experiencing a growing deficit in its chipmaking trade with Asia, but the good news is that Thailand is helping to chip away at that gap. According to US Census data, US imports of chips grew 17% from last year to US$4.86 billion in February, with Asia accounting for 83% of that total. The United States has been experiencing a growing deficit in its chipmaking trade with Asia, but the good news is that Thailand is helping to chip away at that gap. According to US Census data, US imports of chips grew 17% from last year to US$4.86 billion in February, with Asia accounting for 83% of that total. Over the past three years, Thailand has been seen as an ailing patient trying to recover from Covid-19. The kingdom’s malady-ridden economy and tourism sector needed more than two vaccine doses and a booster shot to get back on its feet but over the past year, the Land of Smiles has emerged from convalescence much stronger. Tourism is flourishing and exports are on the increase, and that includes the chip industry. Thailand, Vietnam, India and Cambodia have emerged as early winners this year as semiconductor production begins to move away from traditional centres such as Taiwan and China. India saw its semiconductor shipments increase 34 times to US$152 million, while Cambodia clocked in an impressive 698% growth, falling just shy of Japan at US$166 million, an amount that would be unheard of in years past, Bloomberg reported. But it is Thailand that has emerged as a strong contender in the US chip market with a 62% increase in trade with the US. Vietnam and Thailand, both of which have much bigger slices of the chipmaking market, increased their US trade in the sector by 75% and 62%, respectively. Vietnam has accounted for over 10% of US imports for seven straight months. US officials have expressed growing concern about their country’s overreliance on overseas suppliers, such as Taiwan, and South Korea, for the most advanced chipmaking. US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo has warned that the nation’s “dependence on Taiwan for chips is untenable and unsafe.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/economy/thailand-chips-away-at-us-trade-deficit-with-62-increase-in-chip-market-exports -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-04-06 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Tensions are running high in Thailand as the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) has declared war on the government in a bid to bring down the nation’s soaring electricity prices. The committee, comprised of representatives from major business groups, is asking Prime Minister Prayut Chan o cha to reconsider the electricity bill calculation and reduce the power tariff of 4.77 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), reported Bangkok Post. The current power tariff rates for businesses have increased by 13%, reaching an all-time high of 5.33 baht per unit, while households are charged 4.72 baht per unit. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, a core member of JSCCIB, said… “The government should consider reducing the Ft because high rates will affect the economy amidst a global economic slowdown.” The JSCCIB plans to present a letter to the 69 year old prime minister, suggesting officials should base their calculation on an assumption that the domestic gas supply will increase. Image: Google BANGKOK (NNT) - As Thailand prepares for the upcoming election, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his concern for the lack of unity and urged all parties to prioritize peace and security for everyone living in the country. In an interview on April 5, the Prime Minister emphasized the significance of unity and peace, warning that neglecting to prioritize them would result in Thailand losing many opportunities on international stages. Gen Prayut cited a literary work by His Majesty King Rama VI that emphasized the importance of national security and peace and implored all sides to collaborate on avoiding putting the country in a critical situation. The Premier, however, refrained from elaborating on the reason for his emphasis when questioned by reporters, suggesting that others may be better equipped to provide insights on what could potentially trigger social unrest. More than 5,000 refugees from Myanmar, including about 800 children, have fled fighting to take temporary refuge in the Mae Sot and Mae Ramat districts of Thailand’s western province of Tak. Local Thai officials said that the refugees, who are mostly ethnic Karen people, have been crossing the Moei River, a natural borderline and shallow during the dry season, since fighting between government and rebel forces intensified in Myanmar’s Myawaddy province. The sound of automatic gunfire and occasional explosions are audible on the Thai side of the border. One mortar shell reportedly slammed into a village where Chinese businessmen have their operations, according to Thai security sources, adding that there have been no reports of Chinese nationals seeking refuge in Thailand. Thailand’s Civil Court issued an injunction today (Wednesday) barring Chuwit Kamolvisit from campaigning against the Bhumjaithai party over its cannabis policy, pending the outcome of a defamation lawsuit, filed against the self-styled whistle blower by the party. The court ruling follows the filing of a motion for temporary protection with the court by the Bhumjaithai party today, seeking an emergency injunction after the court rejected the party’s complaint on the grounds that barring Chuwit from criticising the party may infringe upon the defendant’s right to free expressions. In considering the party’s complaint today, the court ruled that it appears that Chuwit has stopped criticising the Bhumjaithai party over the Orange Line train project and, hence, there is no need for the court to issue an injunction to stop him from criticising the party on that issue.
