  1. Flickr/Globespotter Representatives from the Chambers of Commerce in Phuket and Chiang Rai are pushing for the resumption of direct flights between the 2 provinces. The popular Thai VietJet lights were suspended as a result of low demand during the pandemic, but as domestic air travel picks up, businesses and tourism operators would like to see the return of direct flights between Phuket and Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang airport. Currently passengers would have to fly via Bangkok and get a connecting flight. According to a Bangkok Post report, the president of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce recently travelled to Chiang Rai, accompanied by a delegation of officials. Thanusak Puengdet met with local business representatives, as well as the president of the Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce, Anurat Inthorn, and Promporn Jindawong Netharn, acting chairwoman of Chiang Rai Tourism Council. Officials in both provinces are working together ahead of the Phuket Wellness Week festival, taking place between March 3 and 6. According to Thanusak, both provinces are developing their wellness offering and the festival will showcase several products harvested in Chiang Rai, such as tea, coffee, and fruit. “The cooperation will benefit both sides. Tourists will be able to travel directly and in larger numbers between two provinces.” Thanusak believes the resumption of direct flights between Phuket and Chiang Rai would also help fruit and vegetable growers in the north and improve supplies to the southern island. In addition, it would facilitate bringing workers from Chiang Rai to Phuket to fill the many vacancies that have arisen on the island as a result of the rebound in tourism. 3. In a bold move to promote safe sex, the Pattaya National Health Security Office (NHSO) has recently introduced a new initiative: a free condom vending machine called “Love Bang, Love Safe”. Yes, you read that right. And no, it’s not a new club or a questionable dating app. The idea behind this machine is simple: To encourage people to practice safe sex and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections, especially during the last Valentine’s Day, Dr. Chadet Thammathatchaaree, Secretary-General of the NHSO, said on Tuesday, February 14th. The machines are placed at three spots around the city. One is at Bali Hai Pier with a big and clear message emblazoned at the front that says “Love Bang, Love Safe (เลิฟปัง รักปลอดภัย)”. Well, although the message is meant to be creative and informative, it also has a certain cheeky charm to it that makes it hard to ignore. 9. PHOTO: Facebook/รวบ The authorities in the US are calling on a Thai woman who fled to Bangkok after she struck and killed a student with her car to turn herself in. Tubtim “Sue” Howson, a US citizen, fled the scene after the incident in Michigan, in which 22 year old Benjamin Kable died. According to a Coconuts report, at around 6am on New Year’s Day, Howson struck the Michigan State University student with her BMW, before fleeing the scene. Mr Kable subsequently died and on January 3, Howson fled the US on a flight to Bangkok. Michigan state sheriff Michael Bouchard has begun the extradition process and is urging Howson to turn herself in at the US Embassy in Bangkok. “Come back, go to the American Embassy in Thailand, do the right thing. You know things got worse because you left the country. You know extra charges were applied because you didn’t stop at the scene.” The victim’s father, Mike Kable, has expressed disbelief at Howson’s actions following the death of his son, who was studying electrical engineering. “Just the lack of empathy and humanity it would take and then to just plot your getaway. All we can do is cross our fingers that we get some justice.” Meanwhile, Thai police say they have not taken any action as they have yet to receive an extradition request. In the US, a felony arrest warrant has been issued for Howson, for failing to stop at the scene of a fatal crime. Authorities say she could face additional charges as a result of fleeing prosecution.
