At least two people were injured and have been rushed to the provincial hospital. It follows the recent news that 2 Bangkok taxi drivers face legal action for operating in Phuket, outside their registered jurisdiction. The drivers were caught at a checkpoint on Monday. It’s understood that on Wednesday, a group of taxi drivers registered in Bangkok and other provinces gathered at Saphan Hin in Phuket Town. The drivers were protesting against the recent crackdown and insisting that they were providing a vital service for tourists in Phuket. Following a meeting of the Phuket Land Transport Office yesterday, PLTO Chief Atcha Buajan confirmed that “green plate” taxi drivers from other provinces will now be allowed to operate on the island. However, they must first register with the Phuket PLTO within a month of arrival to confirm they are operating in Phuket and not the province in which they’re registered. Officials in Phuket have been getting busy cracking down on anyone seen as “competition” to the island’s powerful clique of locally-registered taxi drivers. BANGKOK (NNT) - A 29-year-old Thai woman, Chaimaiporn Homsantia, has been found dead following a massive earthquake in Turkey. The earthquake, with a magnitude of over 7.8, was considered one of the strongest to hit the area in a century and has claimed more than 17,000 lives, with at least 12,873 in Turkey and 3,162 in Syria. Chaimaiporn, from Chaiyaphum province, was working at a business in Georgia before moving to Turkey when the Covid-19 situation improved. She was last in contact with her family over the weekend and was later found under the rubble of a collapsed building in the town of Iskenderun. The Thai embassy has been working with the Turkish authorities to notify the victim’s family and to transport the deceased’s body back to Thailand. Labor Minister Suchart Chomklin has conveyed his condolences to Chaimaiporn’s family and instructed the Social Security Office (SSO) to provide financial assistance. According to SSO Secretary-General Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, Chaimaiporn was previously employed as a masseuse at the Ramada by Wyndham Iskenderun Hotel and was covered under Section 33 for salaried employees before resigning in 2015. Forensic science officers have joined Bang Luang district police in Nakhon Pathom in the investigation into the mysterious disappearance of an eight-month-old infant from the parents’ home on Sunday. The parents were questioned again by Bang Luang police yesterday (Thursday) as to whether the boy was sold or given to other people, because they are suspicious that the parents might be responsible for the disappearance of their own child after searches have failed to find any trace of him. An informed police source said that the police have the mobile phone of the mother and have discovered that her recent Line chat messages have been erased. The crackdown took place at 5 PM on Wednesday, February 8th. Pattaya Police led by police chief Pol. Col. Thanapong Phothi were urged by the Pattaya Bus Cooperative to press legal action on app taxi drivers, such as Bolt, who used their unregistered vehicles to transport passengers. Pol. Col. Thanapong told The Pattaya News that most drivers he pulled over lacked the necessary documentation and credentials to legally operate as taxi drivers, including a valid public transportation driver’s license, transport registered vehicle, designated yellow license plate, and transport insurance. A gang of youngsters caused chaos by throwing ping pong bombs at Bali Hai Pier around 11 PM yesterday, February 8th. Pattaya residents and tourists were alarmed and called for action from relevant authorities. The incident happened last night at a field near Bali Hai Pier in south Pattaya in the Nongprue sub-district of Banglamung district. Pattaya residents told The Pattaya News that they saw a group of about 10 teenagers arriving at the field on motorbikes and began throwing ping pong bombs, creating detonations that could be heard around the area. The group left before the authorities arrived, said the residents who asked not to reveal their identity. The explosion disturbed many people and tourists and also left a big hole in a concrete field. According to Vorakorn Inthapaet, the provincial livestock official in Maha Sarakham, Ban Nong Wa in Chuen Chom sub-district and Ban Kam Kerng in Kut Praduk sub-district have been declared rabies control areas from last week until February 26th. He said that about 200 dogs and cats, accounting for 95% of the population in the two villages, have been vaccinated, adding that other dogs and cats were sterilised.
