  18. Flickr/Strange Luke A Patong restaurant owner is disputing the story told by a Canadian tourist who claims he was attacked and robbed. According to a Phuket Express report, 28 year old William Lamarche-Saint-Louis told Patong Police that while walking on Friday night, he was approached by 5 men who demanded he hand over his watch, which he says cost 50,000 baht. Afraid to resist, the tourist says he gave them the watch, but the men then wanted his bag, which contained 5,000 baht in cash. When he refused to give them the bag, he claims they attacked him before fleeing. He was subsequently treated at hospital for a broken nose. Yesterday, Patong Police confirmed that a Patong restaurant owner, named as Mrs Tuenjai, and three of her employees, met with officers over the event. They claim Mr Lamarche-Saint-Louis ate at their restaurant and then refused to pay his bill. Tuenjai says the man was very drunk and shoved her staff, challenging them to a fight. Tuenjai says this is when he was attacked, adding that other workers tried to stop the fight. The restaurant owner says the staff involved in the fight were all teenagers and not grown men as claimed by the Canadian. She adds that none of them stole his watch or money. According to police, the man has yet to file a formal complaint, but officers wish to speak to him to get his version of events. However, the tourist is believed to have left Phuket and travelled to Koh Phi Phi. Officers are continuing their efforts to contact him, saying they will not make any assumptions as to which version of events is correct. They add that they plan to check CCTV footage as part of their investigation into the incident. 20. PHOTO: Wikipedia The authorities in Phuket have issued a warning about the presence of stinging ‘flame’ of ‘fire’ jellyfish at some of the island’s beaches. It comes after more than 30 people reported being stung at Kata Beach, although most only experienced mild symptoms. Officials have placed signs at various tourist attractions around the island, including Nai Yang, Surin, and Patong beaches, as well as at Cape Panwa. The signs are aimed at raising awareness of the risk, as well as providing information on how to treat a jellyfish sting. Suchart Ratanruangsri, director of Phuket Marine Resources Conservation, says lifeguards have been given bottles of vinegar as a first-aid measure they can use in the event of someone being stung. “Those stung by fire jellyfish can pour vinegar on the sting for at least 30 seconds for immediate relief.” Suchart cautions that using alcohol or even fresh water on a jellyfish sting will only make the pain worse. He adds that in the event of being stung by a Portuguese Man o’ War jellyfish, the wound should be flushed out with seawater or beach morning glory, instead of vinegar or fresh water. Should also be remembered that these jellyfish are not ‘attacking’ you – we merely swim into their tentacles randomly. Here’s the difference between the two… PHOTO: Flame or Fire jellyfish, usually red or pink in colour. PHOTO: Portuguese Man ‘o War, Stinger or Bluebottle Anyone stung by a jellyfish is urged to seek medical attention as soon as possible. These two types of jellyfish, more commonly found in the Andaman Sea, whilst painful, are not fatal. Unlike the Box jellyfish, which is more commonly seen in the Gulf of Thailand, which can be fatal. 22. PHOTO: Pixnio Police in Phuket say foreigners are reportedly using stolen credit cards to purchase high-end products on the island, including gold jewellery and iPhones. Retailers and businesses taking credit and debit card payments are being told to be additionally vigilant. According to a Phuket Express report, the suspects use fake passports that match the credit card details and wear hats and masks to avoid being identified. If questioned about the masks, they claim the measure is for Covid-19 prevention. According to the report, the suspects usually make their purchases late in the day, targeting shopkeepers just before closing time. Police say this is done to take advantage of the fact that vendors are in a rush to get home and may be more lax about security checks. Officers are asking shopkeepers to ensure credit card information matches a buyer’s passport. They say buyers should also be asked to show their faces and use mobile apps to confirm their purchases. It’s understood the suspects are Asian men, usually carrying black bags, and wearing face masks, white caps, and black shoes. They usually produce American passports, which police say may be fake.
