The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) busted three storage centers located in Bangkok and Samut Prakan and confiscated 14 million baht worth of fake toothpaste, cosmetics, and brand-name bags last week. Maj. Gen. Anan Nanasombat, commander of the Consumer Protection Police Division (CCPD), told a press conference on Monday, February 13th. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Huai Khwang district office has ordered the suspension of a housing project in the Rama 9 area for the next 30 days, following a building collapse on Monday (13 Feb). The incident resulted in injuries to five workers and has prompted the district office to take legal action against the project engineer for alleged negligence. According to Paitoon Ngammuk, Director of the Huai Khwang District Office, there were only a few foremen and a group of workers at the building site when the incident occurred. An investigation into the cause of the collapse has since been launched by the district office, the Council of Engineers Thailand and the Engineering Institute of Thailand Associate Professor Siriwat Chaichana, Vice President of the Engineering Institute of Thailand, said the collapse of the building may have been caused by the scaffolding on the fourth floor, which was unable to support the weight of the cement. Associate Professor Siriwat also suggested that the workers’ exhaustion after a long day of labor may have contributed to the uneven paving of the cement floor, which ultimately led to the collapse. Finance Minister Optimistic About Thai Economic Growth BANGKOK (NNT) - Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has said he believes Thailand’s economy can grow at a faster rate than forecast for 2023 amid the revival of the nation’s tourism industry, which has been aided by the easing of pandemic-related travel restrictions. BANGKOK (NNT) - Finance Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith has said he believes Thailand’s economy can grow at a faster rate than forecast for 2023 amid the revival of the nation’s tourism industry, which has been aided by the easing of pandemic-related travel restrictions. Minister Arkhom said during a recent interview that the monetary tightening measures implemented by the Bank of Thailand (BOT) have been "reasonable" and aligned with the needs of the domestic economy. The finance minister added that the BOT has not been following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s aggressive pace of tightening, as the economy has been recovering at a slower pace than other Southeast Asian countries. He further stressed the need to ensure full economic recovery, noting that raising rates too quickly could have an adverse impact. The BOT has raised the key rate by 100 basis points since August 2022, bringing it to 1.50%. However, the tightening cycle has been less aggressive than many regional counterparts. The central bank’s approach has been based on the country’s economic recovery, which has been slower due to the delayed rebound of the tourism sector. Thailand’s economy was hit hard by the pandemic, which led to a significant decline in tourism and exports. However, strong economic fundamentals, including a stable financial system and a skilled workforce, have provided a foundation for its recovery. With expected growth in the tourism sector and the reasonable approach of the BOT, Thailand’s economy is expected to continue its recovery in 2023, despite the ongoing uncertainty caused by the pandemic. The Election Commission (EC) decided today (Tuesday) to ask the Constitutional Court to rule whether non-Thais can be included in the population for the calculation of the number of constituency MPs for each respective province. There will be a total of 400 constituency MPs and 100 party-list MPs in the House following the forthcoming general election. Earlier, the EC included non-Thais in the population, but the decision has raised widespread criticism, with several political parties and political academics voicing their disagreement, on the grounds that non-Thais are not eligible to vote and, therefore, they should be excluded from the calculation.
