  18. NONTHABURI (NNT) - The Prime Minister today visited flood-hit communities in Nonthaburi province. He asked all agencies to drain out water as quickly as possible and lend a helping hand to everyone in need. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha led a group of Cabinet members and government officials to Wat Saeng Siri Tham in Tha It sub-district. This community has been submerged underwater for several weeks. Accompanying the premier were Minister of Interior Gen Anupong Paochinda, Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn, and Minister of Justice Suchart Chomklin. The Prime Minister on this occasion instructed relevant agencies to work together to help all impacted, especially children, the elderly, and sick people who require immediate attention. The government stands ready to support the mitigation effort as local agencies accelerate water drainage to mitigate the flood impact. Gen Prayut noted that an overflow at the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and neighboring provinces is caused by the floodwater running down from the northern region as well as the increasing sea level. He promised that the government would do its best to manage water resources and supply, and asked communities to adjust their livelihoods to co-exist with the changing weather dynamics. 20. BANGKOK (NNT) - A weather advisory for October 14 and 15 has been issued for the Northeast, Eastern, and Central regions. An increase in rainfall is expected, with heavy rains occurring in some places. An intense low-pressure area prevailing over the upper portion of the Philippines is moving into the mid part of the South China Sea. There is a possibility for the low-pressure area to develop into a storm that will then move toward the coast in central Vietnam today or tomorrow (14 October). The storm or low-pressure area is expected to then rapidly weaken due to a cold airmass moving into the region. These phenomena are expected to have effects on Thailand’s weather on October 14 and 15. Rainfall will increase in the Northeastern, Eastern, and Central Regions including Bangkok and its vicinity. Heavy rains are expected in Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Mukdahan, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Buriram, Surin, Sisaket and Ubon Ratchathani. Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha is urging people in these provinces to exercise caution against heavy rain and accumulated rainwater. The latter could trigger flash floods and forest runoffs. People are advised to follow announcements from the Meteorological Department. Information can be obtained from the weather bureau’s website at www.tmd.go.th or the 24-hour weather forecast hotline 1182. 22. When it happened in 2020, the death of three-year-old Nong Chompoo was one of Thailand’s most tumultuous criminal cases. However, the Criminal Court’s trial, which began a few months ago and has been almost half way through now, has gone eerily quiet, showcasing only social media rivalry between supporters and opponents of the suspects whereas the mainstream media have practically stayed out of the way. From Day One, the case has been fascinating in a few aspects. It shows how the social media can influence or even manipulate public opinions, rightly or wrongly. It tests the conventional justice system’s ability to cope with unconventional and forceful presentation of information that may contain both new facts and fresh lies. It opens up a whole new world where criminal suspects and their backers can operate YouTube channels to proclaim they are “innocent”, and where their critics, detractors and blatant haters do the same to tell the world they are not. It asks a tough moral and legal question concerning donations solicited by the suspects or initiated and handed out willingly to them by generous “sympathizers”. The danger of all of the above is amplified by the near-silence of the mainstream media since the key suspects decided to shut out journalists. One-sided information has been clashing badly with nobody caring to balance it out. Loong Phol’s admirers would only watch YouTube channels that speak exclusively highly of him, whereas the other side slams every content to pieces and presents its own information as the one and only truth. Charges of witnesses being intimidated or bought off have abounded.
