A combined team of volunteers, city officials, and police officers were deployed around Pattaya yesterday, October 12th, in an attempt to maintain peace and eradicate illegal activities in the city during a four-day long weekend. The long weekend ranged from today, October 13th (the 6th anniversary of the passing of His Royal Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej The Great), to Sunday, October 16th. To suppress crimes, Pattaya police had increased patrols and random searches on nightlife venues, focusing on illegal drugs and weapons. This attempt was also partially driven by the tragic massacre at a daycare center in Nong Bua Lamphu where dozens of children and adults were mercilessly murdered. There were about 449 officers participating in the gathering at Bali Hai Pier yesterday. They received a brief from superior officers before being deployed around the city in organized groups to deter potential illegal activities. The STAR / Walter Bollozos MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government urged 42,046 barangays nationwide to encourage their constituents who are unvaccinated, not fully vaccinated and those with no booster shots to avail of jabs vs COVID-19 in the conduct of Barangay Assembly Days. This undated photo shows a person holding a mobile phone. The STAR, File MANILA, Philippines — Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan John Uy said an online registration of SIM cards will be the more ideal option, but individuals may be required to physically register if they encounter problems with the verification of their IDs. “For example, you submitted a picture of your passport online upon registration. But when this is cross-checked with the Department of Foreign Affairs and they cannot verify your passport information, you may receive a text or notification from your telco app and you will be asked to present your ID in person,” Uy said in Filipino at Laging Handa briefing on Thursday. He added that their next goal is to link the registration to the national ID. President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday signed into law the measure requiring SIM Card users to register their personal data with telecommunications firms despite concerns that it would put subscribers’ privacy at risk. BANGKOK (NNT) - COVID-19 vaccination for small children aged 6 months to 4 years commenced on 12 October. Vaccination is voluntary, and parents are now able to take their children to get the shots at a local healthcare facility. Health minister Anutin Charnvirakul inspected the vaccination service for small children in Nonthaburi province. The first and second shots for this age group are delivered 4 weeks apart. The third shot is delivered 8 weeks after the second. The children receive 3 micrograms of the vaccine with each shot, which is substantially less than the adult dose of 30 micrograms. A vial of the dark-red cap type of the Pfizer vaccine is enough for 10 doses in small children. Department of Disease Control Director-General Tares Krassanairawiwong noted that the first batch of 500,000 doses arrived at all hospitals nationwide yesterday. If there is a demand for additional vaccine doses in any locality, the respective provincial health office may request them from the DDC. Parents, meanwhile, may call the DDC hotline number 1422 to inquire about the vaccine for small children. Dr. Tares said about 300,000 parents have expressed their intention to have their children vaccinated. Parents may take their children to the nearest public health facility offering the vaccination service. Gov’t doubles down on drug, gun control following Nong Bua Lamphu massacre BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government is increasing its effort on drug suppression and gun control, following the tragic daycare center attack in Nong Bua Lamphu province. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai government is increasing its effort on drug suppression and gun control, following the tragic daycare center attack in Nong Bua Lamphu province. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha chaired a task force meeting with the police, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Public Health, and the Ministry of Education on drug suppression and gun regulations. After the meeting, the Prime Minister said the government will be enforcing laws related to gun and ammunition control more strictly, particularly on gun licensing and ownership. From now, the government will be making sure that those applying for gun ownership and carrying licenses fully comply with the criteria, including a psychiatric regulation. They should bear a certification letter from their superior or community leaders, and should not have threatening behaviors against society. The meeting today discussed the possibility to revoke gun licenses among holders who have mental issues, who use drugs, and who pose a threat to society. The meeting also discussed more stringent suppression of illegal weapon trade, and updates to some laws and regulations related to the matter. On the suppression of illicit drugs, the Prime Minister said the government has been controlling the import and export of certain chemicals and has been accelerating investigations in drug cases, as well as expediting the seizure and destruction of evidence and assets. The Prime Minister said the government will be reviewing its approach to treating drug users as patients, which should take into consideration the number of drugs owned by that person, while any government officials found involved will be immediately punished. The government now aims to improve drug users’ access to rehabilitation by actively screening patients and setting up more screening centers in every subdistrict. Local communities will have involvement in surveilling the behavior of community members. The government will be improving public services on mental health, by providing mental health support at schools and workplaces. The committee has ordered the establishment of emergency mental health centers in every district, with remote counseling available for people along with a community therapeutic approach.
