Hundreds began waiting outside immigration offices in HCMC as early as 4 a.m. Tuesday and braved the later day sun for hours to submit applications for new passports. Among those waiting outside the Immigration Department on Nguyen Trai Street in HCMC's District 1 was 22-year-old Nguyen Quoc Danh (R). He said he was there before daybreak because he needed a passport so he could study abroad. He had tried to submit his application three times already, but failed because there were simply too many people ahead of him. Some people brought along a snack to munch as they waited. Vietnamese policemen stand guard outside a courtroom hearing a trial involving former Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, Hanoi, Vietnam, January 9, 2018. Photo by Reuters/Kham National Assembly delegates differed over a proposal to hand lighter penalties to corrupt officials turning in their ill-gotten assets. Le Minh Tri, head of the Supreme People's Procuracy, had recently mooted the proposal saying corrupt officials should be given a chance to atone while public assets are also recovered. Trinh Xuan An, a member of the NA Committee on Security and National Defense, said while some countries follow this practice Vietnam is not yet ready for it since corruption is still entrenched and the anti-corruption campaign is ongoing. A member of the LGBT community raises a rainbow flag during the Metro Manila Pride March at the Cultural Center of the Philippines grounds in Pasay, Metro Manila on June 25, 2022. JAM STA ROSA / AFP MANILA, Philippines — A bill that seeks to recognize civil partnerships of couples of any sex has been refiled in the House of Representatives, in a move that seeks to grant same-sex couples the same benefits enjoyed by straight married couples. Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera filed anew the proposed Civil Partnership Act as part of her priority measures in the upcoming 19th Congress, hoping that the measure which did not hurdle the past two Congresses would finally get enacted into law this time. “It is about time that the Philippine government grant couples — whether they are of the opposite or of the same sex — adequate legal instruments to recognize their partnerships, respecting their dignity and recognizing equality before the law,” Herrera said in the explanatory note of House Bill No. 1015. A passenger sits alone at the NAIA Terminal 1 on May 3, 2020 after a suspension of international flights. The STAR / Rudy Santos, file MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang was mum on the bill seeking to rename the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after President Marcos' father, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, saying the measure is still in its early stages. "Malacañang has no comment yet on this one. It's just been filed, after all. It has not been subjected to first reading so any reaction would be premature, if any is even warranted at this time," Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said at a press briefing Wednesday. "This is not a bill filed by Malacañang so it's not our place to indicate whether it is timely or not. It was the congressman who filed it so no comment for right now, particularly, you know, its (in its) very early stages really, it's just been filed," she added. Thailand’s 12-billion-baht Parliament complex opened in May last year after eight years of construction – yet it is still drawing complaints of defects and quality issues. Since its inception in 1992, the project to build a new Parliament building — Thailand’s third — has run into problem after problem. It took many years and governments before a decision on its location was finally made. In 2008, the Samak Sundaravej administration opted for a picturesque 123-rai plot on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, in the Kiakkai neighborhood of Bangkok’s historic Dusit district. The location was deemed the best of the three options.
