A "pandemic" is a viral outbreak, of an unknown strain, etc...
You cannot prepare for the unknowable
Bureaucracy and federal money distribution have always been a bit slow during emergencies in America I believe
Panic serves no purpose, being cautious is absolutely necessary though. That is up to us, not a president. We have necessary info from WHO and CDC, and need to follow it.
Peace
Absolutely, but at the very least you'd expect the president not to gaslight the public with lie upon lie, wouldn't you? Transparent, good faith dissmination of factual information provide in a timely way by professionals. Trump could have come out of this looking like a hero, but his first reaction to anything, always, is to lie. And badly, I would add.

I don't recall seeing folks cheering for more American deaths. On the contrary, I see people calling for less duplicity and more action to PREVENT American deaths.. Maybe it's just your perception

Nothing like the deaths of your fellow Americans to helpguide the Democratic party into power.
God save the USA if that happens.
The public's perception that there have been too many needless deaths during a president's tenure, usually from war, has been the catalyst for many changes of the party in power, Democrat and Republican alike. Are you old enough to remember the Chicago riots and Nixon's "Southern strategy"?

I'm not interested in hurting the president. In most circumstances, these past 3 years, I haven't regarded him at all. I sort of dismissed him as a flim flam man/grifter when I first saw him back in the early 80's. Nothing he's done since has changed that opinion I have of him. My criticism has to do with how this president hurts the people he is charged to protect and serve.

Well, the model is only as good as the available data. The government has failed to test Americans in numbers that would allow for more precise modeling. The numbers could be worse, I don't know. When I took computer programming in school decades ago I became familiar with the GIGO principal "garbage in, garbage out".

Thank God we have a leader willing to make the tough calls. I wonder how many of the 12,000 Americans killed by the swine flu in 2009 and 2010 could have been saved if only Barack Obama hadn't waited so long before acting.
What leader would that be? Jack Ma is shaming our leader who seems to have an infinite capacity for shaming.

I'm not sure where people get this stuff. Probably from Trump. Anyway, the current economic expansion is the weakest in the post WW II period. It is the longest however. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Oh puleaseeee! Bit over the top don't you think? The worry right now is not a large numbers of deaths. The common flu is still by far a much more deadly virus. The worry is that healthcare systems are overwhelmed with mildly sick people and therefore the system will not be able to cope with people who are more seriously sick. Not just with this but for other reasons. That is the worry. So no, you are not going to see some sort of plague with people walking around neighbourhoods yelling "bring out your dead" like some Monty Python sketch!
No, the worry is that Trump's got Jared Kushner crowd sourcing responses to a global pandemic on Facebook.

An an excellent accounting of Trump's latest lies:
People I know here in the states take the right precautions as instructed by CDC professionals. If they have a fear it stems from the perfidy from those meant to protect them from systemic risks. They get to thinking, "Why would they be lying so blatantly? What are they hiding? Just do your job!" Also they'd like to know "what does the 1% that owns 80% of the stock market know, that I',m not being told"? It's not the virus they're scared of, but the response to it.

Many other countries like China, South Korea, have done a good job with containment, and especially with regard to testing. South Korea developed their own test kit in 21 days! In the US, this has been severely bungled from the beginning. First, the administration turned down the emergency funding request from congress, back in early February, saying it was not necessary. Then Trump repeatedly downplayed this, comparing it to the common flu. His repeated denials caused a massive crisis in confidence, that triggered a massive sell off. Had he been smart, and truthful from the beginning, the sell off would have been milder, and $6 trillion dollars would not have been erased from the markets and people's savings. In addition, the US is badly bungling the test kits.
I was scheduled to fly back to the US in a weeks time, and was going to return here late April. The US state department is stating that Thailand will require a letter from a US doctor or hospital, stating you have been given a Corona test, been determined to be negative for the virus, and have a generally good bill of health, if the US is elevated to the next level, which it is CERTAIN to be, within a week or two. He told me even though he works at Cedars in LA, one of the top hospitals in the state, they do not have one test kit. They have been requesting them for weeks, and cannot get them. In addition, he said no doctor will write that letter, since they cannot determine if you are in the incubation period, even if you test negative. So, I cancelled my trip. What is the point of risking a mandatory hospital quarantine, if this thing explodes in the US? In addition, the State Dept. website said that Thailand may require you to provide proof of health insurance, at a minimum of $100,000. Does not apply to marriage visas, according to immigration. I called them.
So, again the administration is lying. The test kits may be going out, but nobody knows where they are going, and they do not seem to be going to the major hospitals where they are most needed. Lying Pence, and Lying Trump. Causing a massive public health hazard daily. Cases increased in the US by 450 in the past 30 hours, and 41 deaths to date. Total cases now at 1,762 and climbing.
Number of Covid 19 tests conducted in US yesterday: 8

60% of Germans will catch a cold or flu in any year and will recover, as they will from Corona. Nearly 1 million elderly Germans die every year, with or without Corona. No one bats an eyelid. I don't think plunging the world into financial chaos is going to change anything.
I think it's because of more than just the virus. For decades the global community has had the benefit or at least the illusion of the "American Put" to kind of backstop against disaster, uprisings, military conflict, economic crises. When that global leader is exposed for being nothing but a hollow personaity cult, inept in the extreme save for it's kleptocracy then people, institutions and governments reassess their options. Sometimes right quickly. It'll sort itself out. Might take awhile.

Stores closing, restaurants closing, soon schools and daycares. People losing shifts to stay home with kids. No more tips that service workers depend on. Healthcare workers about to be overwhelmed. National Guardsmen will be called up soon. No plan put forward to help any on these people but they found $1.5 Trillion today to prop up the stock market. That would pay for 4-5 months of assistance to every American resident @$1,000/mo.

The USA has bungled its response to the pandemic and it reflects directly on the President because he was giving false assurances that all was under control and that testing was available to anyone who requested it. He has kept repeating this deceit despite the fact that test kits are still rationed and that clinics and hospitals cannot access them. 1 Million kits were promised to health facilities by the end of last week. Those test kits never arrived.
Months ago, WHO offered test kits that were approved & accepted by 60+ countries. The test kits were developed in conjunction with experts primarily drawn from health care advanced countries including the USA. The USA declined and said it would organize its own test kits with the for profit sector. Fair enough and one would expect that the USA would manage that. The private sector has delivered in the past.
In the absence of national leadership, months went by with mistake after mistake made. The deficiencies of the US health system are on display for all to see now as Dr. Fauci admitted before Congress that the USA does not have the national infrastructure with which to administer testing even if it wanted to. The USA is turning to draconian measures now because it has no means of identifying parts of its countries where there are large numbers of infections. No testing is leaving state health officials blind. The CDC is moribound, rudderless with an increasing number of health professionals frustrated.
It is inexcusable that so many errors and blunders have been made. As the infections grow hospitals will fill and it will be worse than in Italy because the USA has fewer hospital beds per person than Italy. It doesn't have the health professional to patients ratio that Italy has either. (And the USA is not alone in that regard, because countries like the UK & are even worse.) This could have been avoided. Instead, the USA has lost a good month in preparing for the pandemic. The public will appreciate the severity of this crisis when they start seeing people dying and when it hits the red states hard. And yes, it will those red states hard because they have some of the most dire health care facilities. Watch what happens in Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and West Virginia.
There is no excuse for this. It's a third world response and the US administration must get those test kits into the field now. Hand the task over to the US military logistics specialists if need be but get the test kits delivered and in use.
Excellent post. While I am generally against inappropriate use of military personnel I think that's just what needs to happen now. As you say, their logistics are unparalleled and they have the ability to cut through one hell of a lot of red tape.

Just imagine how the stock market would soar if instead of applying stimulus and bailouts the government had spent the same money in creating reiliant institutions that saw to the well being of the people, who in turn would create the custom enabling markets to prosper. Instead they treat the needs of the populace as an after thought and funnel the money up the steps to the nearest bank and tell you there isn't anything left to help people.
