  1. For the past several days I have been unable to use YouTube and all imbedded YouTube clips here just appear as white boxes. When I try to play a video at the YouTube site I get " Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. " OK, so I dowloaded the flash player, which turns out to be the one I already had installed. So, how do I turn on Javascript, assuming that's the problem? I'm using the MS XP operating system and IE7. Thanks to any kind hearted techies for a helpful response.

  2. I am still deeply suspicious that Bernanke (together with that elderly master of the abstruse statement) engineered the mess so he could try out his theories and "unconventional tools".

    Love that quote....

My theory is slightly different in that I think 'he allowed the 'accident' to happen because he 'knew' the way out.'

(Prologue: And rather remarkably out of thin air a ladder appeared and everyone climbed out and thought that BB was very clever (that's when he grew a beard). He turned to his followers and said 'next time I will show you something even more amazing, unlike Jesus who plans to get exceedingly boring and obnoxious when he turns up next time and lecture you about your excesses, I will create huge numbers of dollars out of nothing (except for a few 3rd world trees) and solve all your problems. And all around were heard the cries 'I am going to buy a bigger house'.)

Surely all speculation until we know beyond doubt the true nature and motives

of his employer……AUDIT THE FED !! waiting, waiting ,waiting :)

The problenm is, when institutions you need to trust lose all credibility, this kind of stuff is very easy to believe.

  3. LB what say ye? Is this guy accurate in his assessment? Or just a alarmist?

The volume is OFF THE CHART.

The negative move is OFF THE CHART.

This is the one stock you need to watch tomorrow. It it craps out below 157, then the market will break some 1000 points in very short order over trading sessions during the next 30-60 days.

Today mattered. You can ignore it. You can act like things like housing starts, unemployment, reality, etc. do not matter.

    They do.

And it will impact this nation to the desire of the Socialist elements far beyond today’s mini-press conference and announcement.

The Revenge of the Obamaempire has begun, and darkness is about to descend upon the Republic. Watch 1100 on the S&P and 10,125ish on the DOW. Did I mention the 1-3-6 rule?

    http://johngaltfla.com/blog3/2010/01/21/of...today-mattered/

I don't really follow stocks flying, but I would say the market is in a corrective phase into February or March. Barring some global financial catastrophe I would expect the market to make another run at highs or to new highs. Later in the year I'm less optimistic.

  4. I believe the OP is asking about the business model of a door-to-door/waiters on wheels enterprise. You know, how do they make money, who is paying them etc. So if anyone knows how these guys make money, please feel free to let the readers know.

    TheWalkingMan

Hmmm, I've never heard of that before. I've seen the Chef's Express and Meals on Wheels that charge a fee for delivering meals from varios restaurants, but when their phone rings they already know they have a customer.

  5. My wife doesn't eat beef either. The larger the beast perhaps the belief is they are more sentient? Anyhow, her and her acquaintances "rescue" animals from the butchers as a form of tam boon. So far I've got 7 buffaloes and a couple of cows that I will see into their old age.

  6. Midas come on, are they saying that the official numbers are not real?

Why would the US goberment do something like that?

12, as you see life is not that bad in Japan, they could be sleeping in tents.... :D

Yes Alex I must stop being so cynical ……… :)

Don't Like the Numbers? Change 'Em

If a CEO issued the kind of distorted figures put out by politicians and scientists, he'd wind up in prison.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405...1655183416.html

I disagree, CEO's and CFO's put out bullshit "headline" numbers all the time. That's what gets picked up by the press and what the public buys into. They'll stuff channels, move up recognition of revenues, change pension return assumptions, whatever. The CFO of IBM is one of the most finacially savvy guys in the world. He could probably show a profit for a quarter where no transaction took place. If confidence becomes raised in a quarter or two projections can become self fulfilling, estimates get raised and the game is afoot. One needs to dig through a lot of SEC filings to see what is "true" regarding a company's financial condition.

God knows what goes on "off balance sheet".

  7. Marxist or not I do not believe that Marx himself, ever imagined that the Bourgeoisie could bailout out the banks for US$1trn one year and then the bankers would grab US$65bn in bonuses the next, without a revolution. That is why I dont believe anybody is going to do anything. What more can anyone really expect them to do to spur anyone into action? (Small idea here - shoot 200,000 unemployed every month.)

Add culling out the over 65 lower consuming air wasters and I think you're on to a winner.

  8. As I get closer to having a family of my own however, I'm moving into "Naam-mode," a situation in which I can live my life and protect my family's interests but not be bothered so much by the politics of the world (I'm no revolutionary, nor do I want to be).... I know that midas may view that as some sort of "surrender to 'the man'" but it's just one man's fight to protect what's his - this is why I asked for perhaps more ideas re: investments (doom or not) as we have some knowledgeable guys in here whom I respect.

jcon but surely that is your dilemma?

Wanting to protect your family's interests requires you to at least ensure

your elected representatives are working for you and your family and not the other way around which seems to be the case now ?

    e.g. healthcare.

Whether you like it or not ( without being a revolutionary ) you still need to participate somehow in changing the mindset in

Washington otherwise I am convinced you will be sacrificing your future family to a very different kind and

far less pleasent USA than was envisaged by the founding fathers.

Rip Van Winkle, is that you?

  9. let the bankers enjoy their big fat bonuses as when the next round of mortgage failures appear whos going to bail them out next time

watch the 60 mins video on the second leg of the sub prime mess

    watch out INCOMMING

I looked at that video clip and it says it was posted in December of 2008. When the 60 Minutes episode originally aired I do not know. Aren't we in the midst of the "fallout" from this phenomenon already?

  10. More than a year after the "governments are spending like crazy", and "the governments have turned on the printing presses", where is the inflation? Where is the "hyperinflation"? Jeez, when you use the prefix "hyper", you sound hormonal and hysterical.

Didn't happen this time round because some smart joe came up with a plan and diverted the surplus cash into the gold market. Look at gold prices and you see the 'hyper' you are looking for... :)

It's a good point. When excess liquidity goes into things no one really needs, like Gold or Tech stocks, there isn't much fallout when it comes undone. Houses though, that's a problem.

  11. Isn't there is English for the definition of "Kreng Jai". Anyway, I have no idea for its true meaning. Posts here are only based on assumption.

    <H3 align=left>greng jai</H3>

This is a very Thai concept that will not translate to any single English word. It can be used to convey a sense of indebtedness and not wanting to impose any more. Thais will also use it in the sense of feeling the need to repay a favour. It can also be used in a sense of being fearful of causing offence or annoyance.

  12. Being deferential, respectful, considerate, polite, courteous and generally taking others feelings and sensibilities into consideration. Then again it is something one feels, more than intellectualizes about in my opinion. Indeed hard to put into words.

agreed, it is entirely intuitive. my understanding, right or wrong, is derived form years of watching it practiced. i do however believe it is one of the cornerstones of thai culture.

I think that's all true, but I would add "if that person if of same or higher status than you".

  13. I'm sorry to hear of your situation and hope things work for the best. A couple things spring immediately to mind. 1) HE may be a member of this forum and maybe you shouldn't give any details that might allow him to identify you or himself. 2) You should probably make copies of those letters you found. 3) In what little time you have before you return to work maybe you could make arrangements for someone to document her infidelity in your absence. Again, sorry for your circumstances.

  14. 10 year basis, down about 25% in price, down about 25% in underlying currency to purchase, down about 25% +/- in inflation. It payed a sweet approx. 2% annual dividend for most of that time though.

OK, that last bit was sarcasm.

I guess that's the beauty of us all having different investment strategies.

I'm very happy that USD as well as US stocks have deliberately been a minor part of my portfolio for the last decade, and probably will continue to be for the next decade. :)

We also need to be careful using equity indices for a variety of reasons. One of my favourites examples of this relevant to OP's thread in Thailand is Aberdeen Growth mutual fund vs the SET Index. This is my largest single holding here, as well as my longest. The mutual fund is up over 300% since its inception in July 1997, compared to a measly 5% on the SET.

The reason I post the S&P 500 is because most fund managers don't beat it. Yes, many do in some years.

Globally things looked only a wee bit better:

  15. While I was there she asked me for money exactly once. And that was like 9 month in. I have to say I met her mom and she really is sick (her hand is cripled), dad left a while ago. Anyways, this one time she said mom needs (and I dont exactly remember, was it medicine, or doctor, but something like that), can you help. I said how much, I don't remember exactly but I think it was something like 7000 baht. But the cynic in me told her no, I told myself this is a slipperly slope. I said I'm not responsible for that, and I cannot give money for your mother. I said I'll take care of you no problem, but not anybody else. She never said anything to me again.

I think this is what shes refering to when she said "Do you remember?".

Was I an asshol_e for not helping here there? Maybe it was legit, and she saw me differently from then on. I think I should have thought about this more, I would be pissed too if my mom was in trouble and my partner refused to help. But I dont know.

I am Thai so I probably am biased. I think this was your fatal mistake. If I were you I would not just simply give her the money (That is also many Farang's mistake and why they got burnt) I would personally take her mother to the hospital, paid for the medical (Not that expensive in Thailand) and probably gave her some small cash, 1,000 would be more then enough and all the while acting like I was taking care of my own mother.

I think she tested you and you failed. One thing about Thai girl is that when you marry one; it is not only the girl you get but the whole family.

All the drinking and partying was probably her decision making process. She was choosing between you and her family and she was devastated because the choice she had to make was so obvious.

It is equally possible that she has already got a new boyfriend or she just uses that as an excuse. If she does have a new boy, I seriously doubt it that she is serious about this transitional boyfriend.

I would go to talk to her face to face and find out. Use your sense, being reasonable and sensible. Prepare to cut her loose if you feel she is after your money.

You are the best person to tell if that is the case or not.

Very good and sensible insights. I hope you stick around.
