  1. I saw the same series of Youtube vids about the guy in Cebu. I think his name was Phil? From the UK as I recall. I think the difference that people see with homelessness of foreigners abroad vs. in their home countries is one of choice. The vast majority of homeless foreigners in SE Asia got caught thinking with the little head rather than the big one. Got involved with the wrong woman and lost all their money/property. This seems less, well, forgivable than people who struggle in their home country. They WERE doing will until decided to throw away all their money on their latest young female conquest. IF they had stayed in their home country they could have had a decent, if unexciting, life.
  2. Actually, the Donald was talking about, and I quote, "pillaging and theft". It is obvious that he meant the mass robberies and destruction plaguing California cities. The kind that is making major retailers leave in droves. Simple shoplifting has been around since God's dog was a puppy. And was not the point he was making. The kind of organized orgies of looting that occur are a new development, brought on in large part by law enforcement not being able to pursue and/or arrest the perpetrators.
  3. In what way is the organized mass looting and destruction happening in American cities in any way comparable to shoplifting?
  4. You really see any kind of equivalence in the situation? Please tell me you aren't that shallow. Ukraine is surrounded on all sides by NATO member states. If Putin were to attack one, the others would all be forced to join to repel the invasion. I mean, Putin is a madman but he is not a stupid man. The odds of him wanting to expand the war beyond where it is today is about zero.
  5. I think the definition of "shoplifting" is shifting from what I understood. Back when I was a kid, "shoplifting" meant sneakily lifting a chocolate bar or a pack of gum from a shop. It did NOT mean breaking the windows/doors, trashing the place, and stealing bags full of merchandise. I equate what is happening in many American cities to home invasions more than anything. The casual and wanton destruction of property for no purpose, the terrorizing of shop owners and their families, it goes beyond simple theft. In these cases, I think that business owners have the right to defend their businesses as if they were defending their homes. That is, use deadly force if necessary to repel the invaders. FAFO would give some pause to the looters and vandals who assume they can get away with such wanton anti-social behavior.
  6. I have no problem with any of that. And, at the same time, close all ports of entry to any trying to gain entry without visas. Mercilessly pursue and execute the cartels who are involved in the horror that is human smuggling. Do not release anyone into the country- house them in camps near the border until their cases can be heard.
  7. Those prices still make me cringe. We last visited in March 2021. Flight from Japan to US was about $1,000. We did a 3 week roadtrip in a camper (25 foot). Rented in LA, cost $1800 total. Hit Death Valley, Lost Wages, Valley of Fire State Park, Natural Bridges National Monument, Monument Valley. Then a southern swing through Petrifed Forest NP, Saguaro NP, down to the southern border to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, then back to LA. The best of the US is the park system, without question. Gas was max $4.50 in Cali. Wine, grilled steaks on the barbecue every night, paradise. I shudder th think what it would cost now.
  8. Can you be a bit more specific as to whay constitutes "victory"? Does it include a full return to the pre-war borders? Does it include the return of the Crimea? You are sadly guilty of what many supporters of the war also do- make vague proclamations and gaslight anyone who disagrees as a Putin puppet.
  9. Depends on what you mean by "win". Give him a couple chunks of eastern Ukraine? Sure, no problem, as long as guarantees are put in place to recognize the terrirorial integrity of the remainder. The more the west faffs about, the more he will try to go for the big win, and conquer the entire country. How do you see a "win" for Ukraine?
  10. Ah, the money isnt real because we are sending scrap to Ukraine. Is that how to support an ally? Not to mention the billions of dollars that go to keep the Ukranian government afloat, pay for their staff. Pull the other leg, it has bells on.
  11. I guess nobody remembers what the "P" in "RIP" stands for these days...
  12. How about....now? Today? There is a false dichotomy at work here that shows up constantly in discussions about Ukraine, and I am not sure why. Apparently, there are only two positions; support Ukraine without limit, or Putin's puppet. Believe it or not, there are more ways to see the situation. I don't think anyone is seriously advocating 1930s style isolation. The US is not going to drop out of NATO, the Five Eyes, various treaties with other nations, etc. But there does need to be some open discussion of exactly how much and for how long the US will support Ukraine. Also what the Ukraine needs to do in order to keep the money flowing. At the moment, the US has spent $1,000 per American family on Ukraine. How much is enough?
  13. This is the comment you thought was homophobic; Would point out transgenders aren't homosexuals, therefor people that don't like them aren't homophobes. How does this qualify in any way as hate speech or homophobia? Seriously.
  14. Perhaps we can leave the political bickering for one day? Her time in the Senate was influential and consequential. Condolences to her family.
  15. You might want to ask women about that. If they mind sharing their bathrooms with men. Or if parents mind their daughters using the same bathrooms as men, even though they are wearing woman-face. Sports is another area with genuine consequences. Scholarships, sponsorships, and championships are at stake. Letting men compete with women is another blow to women's rights and another shrinking of spaces that have been carved out for women. Funny how there is never any problem the other way, wonder why.
  16. ...or perhaps he is doing his job as a Senator and trying to account where the money is going? Seriously, no need to resort to ad hom attacks just because you disagree. Believe it or not, it IS possible to oppose Ukraine war funding and be neither of the things you mentioned.
  17. Amazing how quickly the thread devolved into a "b-b-but Trump!" festival. As for Menendez, the envelopes of cash thoughtfully labelled "to Bob Menendez" and the one kilo gold bars might be a bit of a giveaway that something odd was going on.
  18. I was agreeing with the final bit about 'why not just let others be happy'.
  19. Most people would agree with you on this, regardless of their political leaning. However, the politics is the point. There is a difference between letting people be happy and letting men use the ladies' bathroom, or compete in women's sports, or trying to indocrinate children about it.
  20. Sounds reasonable. Spending more money on Ukraine should be part of a separate bill, not the general government spending one. Let Congress debate openly about whether or not to add $6 billion to the national debt for that conflict. No reason for the US to pay the salaries of first responders and the like in another country.
  21. How is it homophobia? Gay and trans are very different things. From what I have read, there is definitely a mental health component to being trans. Gender dysphoria, auto gynephelia, certainly depression and anxiety disorders... I guess the takeaway is that care that "affirms" the person claiming to be trans is not necessarily the best option. I can't think of too many other mental health conditions where the accepted treatment is to accept the delusion of the patient as being real.
  22. I suspect you may be right about Biden. Who do you think is the "democratic STAR with landslide potential"? I can only think possibly of Gov. Newsom, hence his upcoming debate with DeSantis. A possible rehearsal for the big show... That would also put pressure on the GOP to come up with some new blood too. I can't see Trump beating a new, young Democrat.
  23. At risk of going off topic, Hillary probably ran the worst campaign in the past half century. Realistically, she should have beaten Trump like a drum. New blood would be great. The Democrats are stuck with Kamala if Joe decides to quit, and that is a guaranteed loss. Yet if they try to ditch her, it will cause chaos in their base constituencies. So I fear we will be left with a rerun of 2020.
  24. Genuinely curious. How is it defending him to call him "scummy towards women" and a "legendary BS artist"? Or hoping that he does not get the nomination?
