These Asian Hornets are extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all cost. I had a nest of them in a bush in the garden (unbeknown to me) and happened to catch the bush with some ladders I was using and I was attacked by three of them and got stung on the knee. Extremely painful which lasted for about three days before dying down. Some two weeks after my ankle felt as though it was almost paralysed. The doctor told me that the toxin can stay in your body for months and if you are unfortunate to get stung again by one of these hornets it can possibly kill you. I waited until evening and poured petrol on the bush and lit it with a long stick which had a petrol rag on the end which burnt the nest in seconds and I was darned glad to get rid of it.
About two years ago, two Thai men were killed by these hornets whilst trying to raid a hornets nest for the grubs south of Hua-Hin. One man did survive, but was in hospital for months before recovering from the toxin.

Maybe it would be prudent of the banks or private lenders to actually check on the buyers ability to repay what they will owe beforehand, which might save the poor consumer from getting into a situation that is drowning them. Not that I for a moment think that banks or private lenders have a heart, but bad debts are bad business for them too.
The phrase 'Subprime Loans' comes to mind, but the Thais in high office won't have heard of these and even if they did they would deny it could happen in Thailand. We know everything is their motto!

Not really. The super overpriced 400K / 40K government sanctioned policies are a HORRIBLE VALUE and won't go far at all for anything actually serious.
Cheers.
Instead of having to take out derisory 'Health Insurance'. why not let us have a separate saving 'Bond' of 440,000 Baht held in the bank to 'Self Insure' and if we use some of this then we have to top it up again and have it checked at our 90 day reporting to retain our retirement extension of stay? This would overcome the real problem for people like myself aged 76 that will not be able to obtain Health Insurance.

Look into the provision that may allow you to increase your bank account to cover the inpatient insurance coverage requirement of 400k. In other words, increasing your Imm stipulated frozen bank account from 400,000 minimum to 800,000 minimum, year-round for your extension.
Yes, this is what I was saying, but where in the 'provision that may allow you to increase your bank account' is this stated? I would be quite willing to have them stipulate that I had to keep 800,000 all year round if that would cover this stupid new rule that may be applied to renewals in the future. I'm 76 years old and have lived in HH for some 13+ years and would like to live out my days here as I came here for health reasons where the climate allows me to enjoy life without medications. I have no wish to be forced out of Thailand, when I can prove that I am more than capable of paying for my health care needs.

With this said, I agree that medical insurance should be mandatory for all.
So, pray tell me what a 76 year old does when the insurance companies will NOT accept you. I was under the impression that this stupid government had made the ruling that your had to keep 400,000 Baht in your account ALL YEAR ROUND in order to cover yourself for any medical costs you may incur. I have used Thai hospitals here in HH and have never failed to pay my bills. I do not see how anybody can leave a hospital WITHOUT paying any monies owed. Simple answer, let the hospital retain your passport until your bill is paid, but that is too easy for these idiotic nurds to understand.
How about us being allowed to pay a monthly health insurance fee to the government to cover the use of Thai hospitals, or have a bond paid for that covers say 400,000. This could be a 12 month saving deposit account held purely for health reasons?

No need to have it in the bank now.
The rules that went into effect on March 1st state it only needs to be in the bank for 2 months from the date you apply. It took a while for a few offices to get the message but I most of them are going by the new requirements.
Someone posted recently a copy of the 'Royal Thai Police statement #35/2561 dated January 2019, which set out the NEW rules that you are inquiring about in which it states 2 months seasoning prior to you application for renewal of extension of stay on the grounds of retirement. Maybe someone can obtain a copy of this and post it on here for us all to see and we could print it out?

Air pollution is a major factor in my relocation...have chronic breathing problems after moving to Thailand...my health, good or bad, is in direct proportion to air pollution...
Sorry you had to endure pain and suffering with your cancer treatment...I'm hoping to avoid your experience by leaving Thailand soon...
I know...I'll be careful of the door as I leave...????
Have you thought about moving to the Hua-Hin area, which does not suffer from poor air quality. We do not suffer from the problems that CM has due to the crop burning. The 2.5 micron particles are not stopped by the masks that we see people wearing they are far too small and these are the particles that cause lung/throat damage in the main. If you want to check on the air quality in the HH area I suggest that you look at the 'visibility' quotes on the Thai Met office website, it's normally about 10kms. I hope this is of some help to you and may I wish you good health in the future.

Lots of BOT talk, the numbers show its the same, same. The single biggest change they could do is get rid of these silly Bank restrictions imposed on foreigners want to buy foreign currency vs. Baht, to send abroad. Its easy to send money in, but difficult to send it out. This is one reason the Baht remains strong. But realize, and few expats here do, if you have a Thai brokerage account you can so very easily send money abroad in your own name, instantly.
So, how does one acquire a 'Thai Brokerage Account' dare one ask?

Must be or they wouldn't show it in a thread about diesel.
I just thought the same thing? I've never seen one or even heard that they existed. Probably one of 'The Nation Thailand' picture editors idea of a joke -- or maybe just sheer stupidity?

This topic has come up very good time for me.
My wife and three other friends, all retired teachers want to go and visit New Zealand and Australia.
They plan to fly to the north of the north island and then drive down to the south island and then fly to Australia.
My wife has both a Thai and a UK passport and plans to use the UK passport to enter and leave both New Zealand and Australia.
The others only have THAI passports.
We did a similar visit some 12 years ago and I remember having to get some electronic Visa for Australia. I also remember you have to be careful where you got the Electronic thing from else it cost you a lot more money.
Would someone kindly point me into the right direction to apply for whatever she needs
can anyone recommend a car hire company such that they can hire a car in the north and drop it off in the south
Thanks
A few years ago, I was contemplating doing the same, but came across a company providing fully inclusive coach tours and booked a 17 day tour of New Zealand (both North and South islands). This tour was fantastic and we got to see things that I would never have seen if I had been driving myself, and also you can have a drink without being worried of being hauled over by the police. The organisation was superb from start to finish with very good quality luxury coaches and hotels. My wife and I couldn't fault the tour. They had a wonderful system whereby each and every day you sat in different parts of the coach. The drivers, one for the North and one for the South were excellent guides and kept us informed as we traveled around each day. Cost wise I sure that we could not have come close to matching the price we were charged for everything and we had absolutely no need to organise anything from start to finish. No hassle hiring cars, which I'm sure you would need two of for five people and luggage, no having to haul your suitcases in and out of your vehicles (all taken care of by the drivers) and you would all be travelling together on the same luxury coach and no worries about vehicle breakdowns accidents etc.
If the moderator removes the name of the company just PM me.
I don't suppose that I am allowed to name the company on here, but if you are interested just PM me.

there is one thing they keep not covering it's the 800 k blocked at the bank. My idea is/was to use property as collateral but I may be dreaming, for example, the majority of us expats (or maybe not the majority but a good quantity of us) has Thai family and may have bought house/land for them, the other ones not married to Thai also have purchased property, investing in Thailand thus money it's here and if used as collateral/property lien for the 8ooK proof of funds one could NOT sell the property without the removal of the lien from IMO. Using this option would be good for the economy as it would allow us/family to spend more VS having the money at the bank bringing a very low interest and for some removing the burden of having that money moved in and out every 4 months and always worried if one has enough to be able to renew their extension
I've had the same idea as you; let's hope that the IMO are reading some of these bright ideas, but I very much doubt that they would see the logic of it.

I suggest you consult your medico and seek referral to dietician/nutritionist, moderating diet is better than only depending medication.
I seem to recollect reading that 'Statins' are virtually useless for people over the age of 50, just good old 'Pharma' and the FDA together making a buck never-mind the kickback for the docs writing out the scripts. I read this (sorry can't remember where) when I was doing some research to try and help a friend that was concerned about health. Try 'googling' statins and find out just what the side effects are that they don't tell you about. Just my two penny worth!

I've noticed the same thing here in Hua Hin, but it's the very tiny ants that seem to indicate that rain is on the way. Nature seems to know an awful lot more than we do at times. I wish all the people who have had their homes flooded all the best; it must be horrible for them.

# You can see what a bunch of thieves private hospitals are, comparing the prices 70k vis a vis 14k. Sure your private room had a better tv selection, the nurses may have been sexier, and the food might have been better, but 56k different?
# By the way, what do you pay for your annual health insurance?
Prolly a tad more than 14k..............
A few years ago I was suffering from an excruciating headache and I took myself off to the Military Hospital near Pranburi where I was diagnosed with a bleed in the brain after a CT scan and was admitted to ICU. I had been using this hospital on a regular basis to get my INR blood check every few months and I had got to know the Doctor quite well and he advised me to go to a private hospital for the operation and offered to contact people he knew to get me a quotation. The following day I was advised that the best quote he could get was for 1 Million Baht for the operation and 1 million Baht for aftercare. I had given up private health insurance as the cost was now rising exponentially as I was over 70 years old. I told him that I could not afford these prices and he then said that I could have the operation in the Hua-Hin General Hospital. I was transferred there the same day and arrived at about 1500 and I was in the operating Theater at 2000 the same day. I spent one week in the hospital (on the general ward) and my total bill was under 50,000 Baht for everything. The Neuro Surgeon came to see me twice a day including weekends during my stay in hospital. It is more than likely that the very same surgeon would have been operating on me in one of the private hospitals in Hua-Hin if I had gone down that route. I have nothing but praise for the Thai National Health Hospitals.

Just do what the french and Italians do yes yes to Brussels and then do what they want.
Precisely; the UK are the only pillocks who take all the garbage put out by Brussels and read the A4 sheets and multiply them by 10 and then implement the stupid laws, whereas France , Italy etc just nod and rip the bloody lot up and carry on as before. Pity we can't give Northern Ireland back to Eire and have done with it. 'Good Friday agreement 'my <deleted>. It's still all about which religion you support and this will never stop, it is too entrenched in the Irish psychs. to ever go away completely and I know lots of nice Irish people on both sides of the divide that agree with me. I'm sure that IF this ever came to pass we would have that egomaniac Trump putting his oar into it - but then he just wants to rule the world himself - look at his childish behaviour in turning down the Danish invitation just because they won't sell 'Greenland' to him - what a bloody arrogant fool, stirring up trouble wherever he can find it along with his Israeli friends, but then again he couldn't upset this load of hypocrites could he because the great USA is run by Jews. Again I have (and have had) many Jewish friends who abhor what the Israeli's are doing in their so called 'Homeland'. The Israeli's are as bad as any nation on earth at just ignoring/tearing up agreements and putting two fingers up to the UN, and what does his highness Trump do - <deleted> all. Trump's contempt for the Iranian nuclear deal was his way of making Iranians suffer from his paranoia and I wonder how he would feel if the tables were reversed? All the rest of the signatories to the nuclear deal with Iran were happy to keep this going as they stated that the inspectors confirmed that Iran was abiding by the agreement, but not Trump, he's just a warmonger - but let's hope he doesn't succeed and the Iranian people can live in peace again in the very near future.

I'm obviously sorry for anybody who is deaf, but what difference does this infirmity make between them and a badminton player who can hear? But well done to the two of them.

Ok, I understand that you have millions that might save you and pay for the things that might happen to you. Infortunately that´s not how the world works. It´s not possible for a nation to do checks of if the ones that are not insured have money instead. Also money is not an insurance. They can suddenly be used for something else and disappear.
And what if you cannot get 'Insurance' because of your age or previous problems? I have had two admissions to the Hua-Hin General Hospital, one for a brain operation and one for pneumonia and have paid from my own private funds I'm 76. I believe that the recent changes in what you are required to have as a minimum in the bank in order to get and keep your 'retirement extension' 400,000 is to ensure that you have enough money to pay for your own treatment in a Thai Hospital. It is of course your prerogative to have 'Health Insurance' if you wish, but please don't force it (or wish it) onto other people. The recent change in Thai policy to people coming here on holiday that they have to pay some 100 Baht for health insurance during their stay is a total load of BS. The Thai authorities claimed that they were loosing some 20M Baht per year (more BS) because holiday makers were not paying their hospital bills (if this is true) could be solved very easily by the hospital in question holding the passport of the person receiving treatment until the bill is paid. It doesn't take a genius to figure that one out does it?
