I believe that the T.I. told the B.E. ( and other embassies ) that they were being relieved of the income affirmation business and it is as simple as that
Unfortuntely, your "believing" that Thai Immigration told the British Embassy something is only further speculation and means nothing unless you have some evidence.

But 20 baht? No, I don't think so.
Well maybe not for you...I was merely trying to be helpful to a wider audience. But, as they say, "No good deed goes unpunished" or maybe, "no thread is safe from being hijacked".
Cheesy grin to you ????

Hi,
Lanna Golf Club (33rd Military Circle) is on the Mae Rim road. I think a white songthaew gets you there but any songthaew driver at by the river at Warorot Market will help you. The white songthaews are usually parked opposite the post office.

We made 1/2 kilo of fresh cheese last Sunday. Made a herbed Garlic/Dill, the texture of a very firm sliceable Feta (rather than crumbly) that was delicious. So much so, we finished it in two days, sliced on Ritz crackers. Milk and fresh herbs from Rimping, rennet from E-bay, cheese cloth from YOK.
Fresh cheeses are VERY easy to make at home. This one took just about three hours total time, including the waiting between steps, perhaps 30 minutes actual working time. Farmer Cheese, Fehe 20 baht reductiota, Mozzarella, herb cheese spreads... all just about as easy to make at home. Nothing like really fresh Mozzarella in a Caprese salad or melted on a baguette!
Yes, excellent, wonderful, well done you, for being so industrious AND thrifty..but don't you think the 20 baht reduction in the "Tasty" red, mature New Zealand cheese is also worth a small comment?

Yet to find a decent Cheese. ☹
Hey there Charlie H et al...OK here you are, Enoteca one of the best cheese and wine sellers and Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai. Not far from Meechok Plaza, they have a selection of maybe 30 cheeses or more and wines from circa 500 baht per bottle to 30,000 baht per bottle for the good stuff. They have a lunch time menu for about 200 baht (not including drinks). Well worth a visit. So Charlie H, maybe next time a ????

I go there only for immigration matters in the past.
I even went there a few days after immigration moved out, but that was in the morning and it was like a ghost town unlike in the past.
The few times in the afternoon when I had to wait for my immigration visa, it was very quiet too.
But I have never been there at night or during weekends.
I didn't know they have a cinema there... maybe I might drop by for their cinema. Are the movies shown in English or dubbed in Thai?
1) Movies are in English and in Thai and some have subtitles (in English and Thai)
2) I think you've answered your own question.

I see conflicting statements. Some say business is booming whereas others say it's almost dead.
So what's the real story?
"The real story"...
I've been going to Promenada since the day it opened (mainly for the lovely cinema). The food outlets are generally NOT busy...yes, there are odd times during the week when there are more customers than staff but not often. The busiest are: KFC, Dukes, Wine Connection; Fuji and the Thai food outlet opposite KFC. Also the outside food stalls at the weekend can get busy...ish. Rimping can't really be called busy (in comparison with other Rimpings), the restaurant seems popular but I've never seen a queue. There are a number of coffee shops, none of which are particularly busy and the largest (Tom n Tom?) seems busy, but it's usually populated by the digital nomad crowd drinking 1 coffee every 2 hours. Other outlets are appallingly quiet..The Sport World staff just lounge around waiting to pounce on any customer, the electrical retailer Chi Chang generates a few customers but nowhere near enough to justify the number of staff. SF Cinema city is popular(not least of all because of the acres of space inside each cinema). The couture and fashion shops are generally deserted but the bicycle retailer (Jinny Bike) does get some customers. I'm fairly sure that the Thai Immigration move hasn't helped either. There's occasionally good weekend entertainment none of which really generate footfall and customers inside and anyway they're too infrequent to make a difference on the P&L balance sheet. There those in denial that will say they went on a specific day and it was "really" busy....but there are 7 shopping days in a week and one good one doesn't pay for the 6 bad ones.
All that being said, the Promenada is a great place that has / had potential. It's design has been well thought out and it's a nice place. I wish that there was more life and vitality inside.
Regards,
Joe
PS: Why don't you go there and see for yourself and report back?
PPS: It's still a mystery to me why / how the internal car parks are so full when there are so few customers. The staff seem mostly to use m/bikes....

Question from a friend in the UK...(UbonJoe do you know the answer please?)
"Can I put 850k in bank Nov and arrive in Nov and get my retirement visa? (I can live on the 50k for 3 months) Or does the money have to be in my Thai bank a/c 3 months before I arrive in Thailand?"

I wonder how many non-smoking customers establishments lose when they see smokers doing their thing where food is being served? I really dislike the overwhelming smell of cigarettes when I'm eating, so I vote with my feet.

And if the Yanks and Aussies are allowed to continue as they have with their income statements, it will become apparent that the Thais prefer form over function, i.e., gov't to gov't interface will be in accordance with established diplomatic and consular procedures. And the Yanks and Aussies require the well established form of in-person attestation and oath administration.
But, if the BE comes to the conclusion that it doesn't have the resources to require in-person attestation -- even tho' the workload would certainly diminish from the current mail-in numbers -- don't expect income letters in the future (unless the Thais decide to sidestep traditional consular protocol and allow mail-ins -- but only for certifiable government pensions, as in the Swiss example).
Sorry to ramble, but the history of consular relationships is enlightening, particularly with the current subject matter (from US sources):
Anyway, the one thing that notarizing officers can't do is authenticate or certify documents (except passports and/or the seals on foreign documents). This is spelled out specifically on the US Embassy website for Thailand. But, it's curious to see this inclusion:
And, I guess, that remains to be seen re the Yanks. As for the Brits -- good luck with that crowd of your less than inspiring "diplomats."
Thanks, excellent post!

In retrospect I think everyone reading the TV posts on this subject understands that the radio interview with the woefully inadequate, second-rate, British Embassy staffer was less than useful. Not least of all because the responses to the questions were either ambiguous or just plain wrong and which were only prompted by the gentle, obsequious probing by a sycophantic interviewer, (which didn't help either)! For goodness sake, as a result of the furore generated by this statement why on earth has this not been followed up?
Would it not be reasonably easy for "The Nation" newspaper (aka ThaiVisa?), to use their investigative-reporting clout to get the British Embassy to come up with some useful and meaningful answers to the important questions regarding their (the British Embassy's) decision to stop the "Pension Letters" with no prior consultation with members of the ex-pat community and even more disgracefully, having known about it and kept it secret, since May 2018?
This high-handed attitude surely has to stop!

Looks more or less the same as the one I got in June this year, main difference being there is now a disclaimer at the bottom of the letter...
[Edit: Apologies, with all the faffing around taking pics & editing out details, Shoeless Joe beat me to the fact that there is now a disclaimer at the bottom of the letter, but for anybody who's interested there it is on an actual letter from BE - I wonder if this was added in May after them discussing things with Thai Immigration]
My letter which is the same in all respects and with the disclaimer is dated April 2018. So before the MAy meeting.

Exactly! So there is your answer for UK via US embassy. Please note all the caveats making the document nothing more than your word.
All these things coming to an end, especially as equity markets and economies weaken.
Another baseless, pointless, unhelpful, unjustified, useless, comment, adding nothing of value to the conversation.

And this is the important paragraph at the bottom of the British Embassy letter which has not been reproduced above.
"The service provided by the British Embassy, Bangkok on this document should not be taken as to certifying that this document is binding in law (whether UK or otherwise). Individuals are advised to seek independent legal advice as to the validity of this document under the relevant law."

- Thai immigration will never accept foreign documents as main proof of revenues (but they may ask to see them)
- It seems that Thai immigration asked the British Embassy to make a better job because of many false declarations. They will not change for another system that would easily allow fraud!
1) "Thai immigration will never accept foreign documents as main proof of revenues" Well that's just complete guesswork on your part.
2) And when you say "it seems etc., etc." Well that just means you don't have a clue as to what might happen, any more than me or anyone else.
It would be a good idea if you stopped guessing and making erroneous statements.

But the Embassy cannot verify the genuinity and content of the Pension letters.
But they don't have to! The applicant can easily do that with letters and statements from their pensions providers!

TV Forum - thread access problem

Mostly every day now I seem to be having a problem accessing threads and responses. Trying to look at multi pages on a thread seems to lock the screen and means I have to exit, wait a while and log in again. Similarly, the same happens when moving when from thread to thread.
Anyone else having the same problem(s)?
