  1. Great article, thanks!

Quote from Charlie: "Microsoft has lost its ability to twist arms, and now it is going to die."

In this day and age, Microsoft is the Emperor Without Clothes. Its only hope is that Linux continues to be too hard to use for end users, but Linux is ever getting better and at some point will have equality. Especially because Windows is not getting better, as Vista demonstrates.

Large corporations could migrate to Linux right now and save a lot of money over time - once the installation processes are automated enough, and there are enough admins to run them, Linux+OpenOffice is going to have a big cost advantage over Windows+Office - while being just as good or better in most respects. From experience I think Linux is a lot easier for IT administration than Windows when you know what you are doing.

As for Vista, well of course it sucks, and I am not in the least surprised Dell is now offering XP again - if I were to buy a new laptop that would be a pretty good reason to buy a Dell. I have all the faith in the world that Vista will eventually be just as good as Win XP but right now, yeah, it's a joke.

    Yes, quite so...

The article should read "Microsoft have admitted that Microsoft have failed to sell stuff for the sake of it". I run 2K and see no reason to change. It is solid as a rock and, with common sense, will continue to be so, without MS updates. This is their ultimate problem - why change?

  2. I know there has been a lot of criticism on Fox News and CNN of the Al Gore Movie

" An Inconvenient Truth " - I have an open mind and when I saw it two months ago

I confess I believed what was presented - surely even if there are inaccuracies it can't all be wrong ?

In the movie he shows places like Shanghai and Calcutta being very severely affected-

so if they will be so badly hit I dont see why the Gulf of Thailand will be any different :D

    My impression exactly...

Also, I thought that his comment about Thailand being "too far away" from the melting glaciers was the bit that has exposed him as being foolish. Distance is no bar to increasing volume of water in the sea overall.

Maybe he was misquoted, or maybe the ministry of information and communication technology has blocked the water surge... :o

  3. First, I don't think any of the posters on here have any sound idea whether the professor makes sense or not. This is especially so since these are very technical issues that are sometimes reported by people who don't understand what's being said--so they get it down wrong or take it out of context. A poster has already made this point.

Second, what's the basis to generalize to other professors or Thais, generally? That's just more of the prejudice one sees on here on a regular basis. And please, there's a big difference between criticizing something and making sweeping generalizations. The former is ok if rational, the latter is naked prejudice.

You just don't get it. These people criticize thailand because they love thailand.

Is that some expat version of "tough love"? :o

  4. I am sure this is true, as I trust the source completely. This must be the craziest TIT moment thus far!

    Outstanding.

And very believable - after all, any hack of an architect isn't going to screw up something as simple as number of toilets to the extent so far...

    Coops

Well it does explain the conundrum of this point, one that has been made many times on this board, how a Western, internationally reknowned firm of architects could fail on such a basic matter.

I wonder if this will ever come out in the wider media :o

  5. they were constructed, fitted out, plumbed in and then walled over to make way for more space for

    help me out here ,

how would that make more space ??

Because toilets need an entrance door and space either side as a thouroughfare :o

No toilet entrance, no door, shop in front, where you couldn't have one before!

  6. A good friend, who is a senior official connected to the new airport, told me last night that the toilets that have been the subject of much discussion, due to their absence, are, in fact, actually there all along. Thats it - really!, they were constructed, fitted out, plumbed in and then walled over to make way for more space for - you've guessed it - King Power!!! :o

I am sure this is true, as I trust the source completely. This must be the craziest TIT moment thus far!

  7. If you entered on October 16th your six month period ended on April 15th so you are now in your second six month period and on your first entry of that period. Your experience does not prove item 4 of visarunner to be wrong.

Precisely what happened to me - first entry since new rules was 9th Oct 06, my "new" period therefore began 9th April. I (luckily) entered on the 13th April, passport annoted with "first time in this period" under the 30-day stamp. I originally planned to come on the 4th, but stayed in UK for Easter. Had I not changed my ticket, I would have been a one-man psycotic whirlwind at immigration, possibly causing temporary closure of the airport! :o

  8. Foreigners might be allowed to buy condos, but as for being allowed to live here and actually occupy them...?

Very valid point. I have 2 condos in Thailand but couldnt get a visa to stay.

Now I am back in Ireland waiting for the storm to blow over!

Still trying to rent out one of the condos!

I was in the the process of "buying" a really good development on Saturn. Seems that flights there are a bit tricky (negotiating the rings and all), but I expect to make a packet! :o

  9. Just did a update on the 90day rule

    1. You are permitted up to 90 days on visa exemption entries in a six month period.

    2. The six months starts from your first entry after Oct 1st last year.

    3. The period is fixed it does NOT roll.

    4. If you try to enter within 30 days of the end of your 6 months you may only be permitted to stay until the end of the period NO MATTER HOW FEW OF YOUR 90 DAYS YOU'VE USED.

    5. Once your first 6 months is over a new period starts and you will be able to do a border run and return with a full 30 day stamp, which is NOT a Tourist Visa as many think .

    6. Example for six month period : 1.10.06 to 31.3.07 , re-enter with visa exempt on 1.4.07 , or 28.10.06 to 27.4.07, re-enter with visa exempt on 28.4.07 .

Laos trip : Office and Holiday Schedule for Year 2007 of the Thai Embassy and Consulate.

    http://www.thaiembassy.org/vientiane/about_officetime.html

If you are not sure about the days you have spend already in the country please pm me and give following specific and complete information.

    Example:

    1. Entry @ Airport 11.10.06 , exit @ Ban Laem 9.11.06, 30days, visa exempt

    2. Entry @ Ban Laem 9.11.06, exit@ Mukdahan 8.12.06, 30 days, visa exempt

    Enter @ Mukdahan 9.12.06 , exit @ Ban Laem 6.2.07 , 60days, Tourist Visa

extent in Thailand at any Immigration Office for 30days , THB 1,900.-, extension until 7.3.07 .

    3.Entry @ Ban Laem 7.3.07 ,permission to stay until 5.4.07 , 30 days , visa exempt

Immigration will allow this person back into the Country with a 30day visa exempt stamp on 11.4.07.

This person has now two possibilities .

A: Get another Extension (THB 1,900.-) for 7 days at the Immigration and re-enter Thailand on the 11.4.07 with a 30day visa exempt stamp to start a new SIX-MONTH period with 3x30days border runs .

B: Apply on/before the 5.4.07 for a new Tourist Visa.

It is recommended that you apply for the extension at the Immigration Office.

A Tourist Visa will be extended for 30days .

Extension of a Visa exempt stamp and any Non Immigrant Visa will be granted for 7 days only

You can convert the 30day visa exempt stamp to a Non-Immigrant Visa by going to the Immigration Department with the proper documents and 21 day stay remaining, meaning you have up to 9 days time after your entry. Application fee THB 2,000.- .

Please note that your Passport need to be valid for at least another 6 month for any Visa application.

Further info on MFA webpage : http://www.mfa.go.th/web/12.php

All Embassies/Consulates in SEA will issue only Single Entry Tourist Visas.

Please be reminded to apply for a Re-entry permit before you leave during your stay on a Tourist Visa , otherwise your Visa is considered cancelled.

UPDATE , Travellers who arrive without a Visa

are required to show a outbound Air Ticket

proving that they will depart within 30days .

THE ALIENS ENTERING KINGDOM WITH NO VISA MUST PRESENT TICKET OR TRAVEL DOCUMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN PAID ALREADY OR CONFIRMED TO EXIT THE KINGDOM

AND MUST NOT EXCEED 30DAY UPON THE DATE OF ENTRANCE TO THE KINGDOM.

    A couple of clarifications:

Point (2) - is the six-month period fixed April through Sepember and October through March, or is it variable, dependent on your first entry in these six-month blocks? Is it date dependent, or revert to the beginning of a calander month?

Point (4) Are you saying that stamp entry days will be awarded up until the end of the six-month block (dependant on answer above in turn), regardless of days resided in that particular block hitherto?

    :D

The 6 month period depends on YOUR first entry in LOS after October 1 2006 and is an individual date for each traveller.

The number of days you receive when you enter within 30 days of the end of your block depends on the immigration officer. Some have reported getting the full 30 days and some only the remaining days and being told to do another run to re-strat a new 6 month block

Note that some reports that some immigratsion officers rollover the 6 month blocks but most reports point to fixed 6 months blocks as described.

For extended periods in LOS a TV would make things easier. If coming for a string of week-end breaks TVs would be a burden.

What a load of toss then - I have to make sure which day I fly on my October trip, regardless of number of days in Thailand between now and then, or I will face just being issued a couple-of-days stamp and a <deleted> off smile! :o

  10. Every country has the potential to move forward. Every country uses technology transfer to get ahead. Every invention has been invented by many others to be finally reworked for the purpose it is mostly asscociated with. So BKKANdREW - your assessment that china is moving on to producing its own stuff is misguided. And the fact that every country also has to import things to make and export things again refutes your claims.

    Er - where/when did I make this assessment??? :o

  11. I don't really understand all the doom and gloom on this forum nowadays, seems theres a lot of people whi just want Thailand to fail at everything, why bother posting here if you hate Thailand so much.

a phenomenon which jumped into my eyes the first day i joined this forum. the minority of these kind of postings might be justified due to some bad experience or unjust treatment. but the lion share of whining and derogatory attempts to place Thailand in the sewer is nothing else but disgusting.

we all must have had our fair share of shaking our heads and grinding our teeth, but there is always the alternative "if you don't like... LEAVE!"

    I do. Once a month... :o

  12. Just got back from at jolli at this place.....food was awful...booze average...but sure I saw her old man Khun T having a chinwag in the boardrom with some of the directors of the place...........

Not up for sale or anything.....is..it? :o:D

I knew it - Toxin - in league with the dirty Arse. :D

I hope Chonabot it keeping tabs on this!! :D

  13. PeaceBlondie, are you a man or a woman or a mix of both? I'm just curious (as I'm beginning to understand why you are still sticking around in Thailand even with your obvious disgusts of the place (and people ...excluding your Thai b/f of course)) I can see how hate crimes towards a certain group of people in America could deter you from going back there.

Anyway, thanks for reading the article. That's why I titled this thread as a question.

Thats the go Goon! Question the moderators manhood!

Lets see how far you get... :o

  14. What a nonsense - if I was the OP I would have told the whole lot of them to bog off and go on holiday somewhere else!

Is Thailand like some sort of trendy US nightclub where they perceive that the number of bouncers on the door will equate to the willingness of punters to get in?

You didn't even read the OP's posts. That's all I have to say.

I am am glad thats all you had to say, as I did read the OP's posts and commented accordingly...
