    I am not affiliated with BTU, but I knew the group of PRC graduate students who were there before Covid. You're right. They're not wealthy. Prosperous maybe. But certainly not wealthy. And among the ones I knew, this was their first time outside of China--except for one person. Not spoiled. Not entitled. But just committed to improving their and their families' situation in life.

    Why can't it be the other way around? Why can't you go to get travel insurance and say: "I'm going to Thailand. I will be 1) riding a scooter, 2) be publicly intoxicated, 3) eat street food of dubious origins, 3) ride in a variety of water going craft, 4) go hang gliding, etc. Now, please cover me or tell me if you can't.

    Nobody seems to be putting any argument at all up that he was wearing a helmet. I would expect it to have been on or near his person had he had one. Doesn't seem the family is even arguing the point.

    I begin to wonder about this. Twenty somethings and thirty somethings seem to generate most of these stories. I really do wonder if they are mature enough to travel unaccompanied to places such as Thailand. Especially coming from the West, are their survival and danger instincts still intact? They're of legal age, so you can't stop them. But parents, I think, should still give them a long talking to and perhaps dissuade the more foolhardy.

    No, he had no insurance because he had no helmet. He was uninsured for riding without a helmet. Same as if you jump off a building and die. You may have the best insurance policy in the world. But you will be uninsured for jumping off a building.

    40 at my house right now. But 28 percent humidity. And this is much better than 33 or 34 with 60+ percent humidity, which I had several days ago. Wouldn't want to go walking without a hat. But putting one on, the heat is not really that bad. Too bad people don't wear pith helmets anymore. They're perfect for this weather.

    As this story and so many similar ones we see constantly on AN indicate, this is overwhelmingly a problem for young tourists. But when the calls for mandatory insurance pop up, it's always for retirement visas. From all these anecdotal events, it seems to me that retirees are a lot less likely to run up and then run out on giant hospital bills in Thailand than are the unprepared young tourists.
