  1. Whenever these stories come up I would like to know which plastics were found. Name and shame. There are many types of plastic (who would lump a Ferrari with a Suzuki? They just aren't the same). I can't understand how a small turtle could get a PET bottle in its mouth (they take hundreds of years to break down I read). Also when the author writes "plastic and other garbage" what was the other garbage? Be clear. Was it worse, the same or better than waste plastic? Some computer parts are poisonous for instance. Years ago the media went after lead. Then there were warnings about radioactive waste being dumped. Mercury too. All I ask for are the facts in full, not half truths.
  2. And so passengers will suffer, maybe see fare rises to cover costs or be forced back into cars to pollute Bangkok even more
  3. As with all punitive measures introduced by the RTP, the problem lies at the point of contact between the police and the offender. Being stopped for any infringement, whether it's a fine or imprisonment or a points deduction, if the "public servant' accepts a bribe before recording the offense then it will remain useless for all practical purposes. Drivers need to fear being caught because they know the law will be enforced.
  4. For a highly religious people, no one says natural disasters are God's warning.
  5. Americans have a strong need to prove that carrying a gun makes them a man. It tends to make up for their insecurity. The myth of good guys with guns imploded at Uvalde. The UK population wanted gun control but didn't ban guns. Hence there are gun incidents still, but as other posters mentioned, it is rare.
  6. Imagine all those British pensioners packing up their suitcases and muttering, "If they 'ad told me there were no ladies for rent 'ere I wouldn't 'ave bothered coming! "
  7. My company owns factories there. The people who work at managerial level are polite and a little shy. It just means you've never met nice people there and like to show off so they don't like you. What to say?
  8. Seems like many are not worried. One colleague wears a mask due to an allergy caused by PM2.5. Others just seem to prefer wearing a mask in the office.
  9. I will be interested to see Iranian women discard headscarves upon arrival, change into jeans and a t-shirt and drink wine. Iran was a very westernized country at one time.
  10. I noticed this paving problem got worse when the authorities started using those small bricks that quickly sank into the sand at different angles. It seems the foundation was too soft.
  11. As I have only been to China 3 times then it is just my experience. Maybe the Chinese I met were not the same as the ones you met?
  12. That's why it is AI. Current tech may not be able to distinguish among them but it doesn't look like an impossibility. Keep browsing Amazon! ????
  13. This doesn't feel well thought out. What's the plan to stop PM2.5 poisoning tourists? Are tourists likely to stand in a torrential downpour and exclaim, "This is what I like about Thailand!" So Chiang Mai represents the old Thailand - breathing in the fumes from the traffic jams reminds me of the Lanna Kingdom! Why don't they make a plan based on reality?
  14. Puzzled by how Chinese tourists will help the economy. They are generally shy in my experience and don't drink much because they get drunk very fast. What does Pattaya have that Chinese families want? Are they famous for spending in Thai shops?
  15. Heavy heart. Visited a few years ago and the people were wonderful.
  16. So Thailand is somehow incomparable to the west? I beg to differ. The UK has the same problems.
  17. Had no idea that Khao San was popular with Chinese tourists.
  18. While the Future Forward party has not shown itself as more wily than the dinosaurs, it hasn't gone to the dark side yet. People like them because they seemed to offer a New Hope. If they win (unlikely) it won't achieve too much without its founder and inspiration. People here like the status quo. I'm sure they will get a lot of the young vote, but i can't figure how they will out-fox the old foxes.
  19. Don't know if he was drink or just not a competent driver. Perhaps more money than ability.
  20. Personally, I find it interesting that one part of the world is all doom and gloom about aging societies and the future lack of workers while another part of the world is doom and gloom about robots and AI taking our jobs. I suppose AI and robots taking the jobs of retirees is too much to ask?
  21. I was going to mention the idea of raising the cost of fines (100k for drink driving), but just read that road incidents cost Americans $340 billion — or $1,035 per person — in 2019 (The $340 billion figure represented 1.6 percent of America's GDP that year). This kind of implies that people don't mind fines that they can afford. Or pay tea money in the Thai case to avoid fines. Points deduction don't actually frighten people into obeying the law but rather tell them they can get away with stuff until all the points are gone, then carry on as usual.
  22. Where is the good guy with a gun? Hiding under the bed usually. Don't blame him either. Looks like the PM has his excuse to get his law passed now.
