Electric Vehicles in Thailand
JBChiangRai replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Incidentally, there is another problem the HFCEV, the time they take to fuel, typically 10-12 minutes for 300km. If they were less than half full, the filling nozzle ices up, in a warm climate like Thailand you probably only need to wait a couple of minutes, but in a cooler climate as the article stated it can take an hour to get the nozzle off the car, using a cigarette lighter to warm it up is not recommended! Nice in cold climates though, because they are inefficient, the waste product being heat, they keep you warm and toasty. -

The Mirai is an EV, it drives identically to a BEV, it uses a fuel cell and a small lithium battery instead of a large lithium battery. Mirai owners love the way they drive because it’s an EV. -
Every BYD owner in Thailand knows their cars are high quality. One think he did get wrong in that video is BYD buying in leather, they use vegan leather (plastic if you prefer) and they do manufacture that and make the seats themselves too. They make their own semiconductors too which is unheard of.

I received one year permission to stay when I had 8 months left on my passport, this was last July. On receiving my new passport they copied everything over. PE Visa.

I think your grammar is not quite right, you’re talking about somebody else I think? I didn’t pay ฿290,000 extra for a car. I probably saved millions over an ICE with 530hp and sub 4 second 0-100 performance.

Fuel cost saving is a bonus, I like EV’s because I get HyperCar performance for peanuts, I love the complete lack of NVH (noise, vibration & harshness).

What are the chances their Chinese benefactor was put up to it by his friends the girls when they saw their faces on social media? -
I will rest comfortably knowing, that if I am right for the first time, it’s at least one more time than you.

As I said he was speaking for Toyota. If Toyota make a media announcements, all of those who amplify it accurately are speaking for Toyota I would change the text in the photo from Tesla to Transam but I’m currently in Phuket with only my mobile phone -

you are asking if a reporter works or speaks for Toyota? The answer to your question is no and yes, no he does not work for Toyota as he’s a reporter, but yes, he is speaking for Toyota as he is reporting on one of their announcements. You’re being obtuse again, does it come naturally or did you have to practice a lot? -

That’s a very valid point, most charging stations on the highways only have 2 stalls. The first think to check adding more stalls is the supply, it’s certainly a major problem in the UK at motorway service stations. I suspect 8 stalls at 200kw is not possible without upgrading the supply, perhaps they are waiting on that, how many stalls were occupied? -

Indeed, the MG4 starts at 1.2M baht in the UK and is the 2nd most popular EV. If there were no import tariff EV adoption would probably not have stalled. -
We are fortunate to have a body shop in Chiang Rai that is both good and cheap. Start with black if you are going to wrap it as the door shuts etc will be unnoticeable. My car was white to start unfortunately, now it’s FrozenBerry. Mercedes PHEV’s are stunning cars and well worth the premium over the diesel variants. Interestingly, Tesla sell black cars here as standard but in Malaysia it’s white. You pay 50,000 baht extra to have the white in Thailand or the black in Malaysia. I call that sharp practice.

Thailand’s PTT Plc sees future in hydrogen fuel for vehicles
JBChiangRai replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Lithium Ion is being replaced with Lithium Iron Phosphate in all but extended range/performance variants and there will be huge improvements in battery technology. Hydrogen Fuel Cell will find its way into long distance haulage/transportation but it’s too expensive for the humble motor car. It costs 5 times more per kilometer than a BEV because of inefficiencies of either ICE or HFCEV. Liquid Hydrogen is a non-starter (despite Toyota announcing it this month) for several reasons, principally you use a third of the energy in the hydrogen to compress it into a liquid, secondly, it has to be stored in cryogenic tanks at -253°C that means you can’t park it up for a few days. -

Interestingly, MG are up 30%, BYD yet to appear. I am concerned about Chinese EV’s and these markets and USA. If they are taxed highly with tariffs then I think EV adoption will stall. Chinese EV’s are about the same price as ICE equivalents, tax/tariff them to be the same price as non-Chinese EV’s and people won’t buy them, nobody wants to pay 50% more for their car. I certainly wouldn’t. -
I have wrapped 2 cars, the first one with a clear self healing PPF paint protection film, which was expensive about 70,000 baht, and the second one with a color change wrap only. If you’re looking at a black car, you might like to consider a matt PPF that will give the car an interesting finish. I am very happy with the color change wrap, which cost me about ฿32,000 however, my friend has just had his Chevrolet trailblazer painted from its original white to a blue metallic, it was cheaper than having a wrap and finish is superior. next time I will re-spray to change the color. Changing the color in the blue book cost less than 100 baht..

When you consider how much work goes into mining these rare earths for one EV battery originally (200,000 Kg) this has to be a fraction of the cost.

Chinese firms eye EV supply chain in Thailand’s Smart Park
JBChiangRai replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
My understanding of the subsidies to the Chinese EV sector post 1/1/2023 is that they are both investments by China and grants the purpose of which is to fund overseas value chain advantages. None of them go into domestic EV production. For example, grants to help BYD build assembly plants in Europe, purchase of large roro ocean going distribution ships, investments in rare earths organizations and battery plants. SAIC to open a network of dealerships across Europe. The scale of which is much larger than Nikkei published, it’s something between $25-$30B. But none of these fund the manufacturing cost of any EV’s only the barriers to entry to market on the worldwide stage. It could be argued that whether this is subsidizing Chinese EV’s is just semantics. However, it’s no different to the grants Tesla received for its Giga factory in Germany, or Nissan received for its auto plant in Sunderland UK or TATA received for its steel plants in the UK. In my book, there’s no difference. Fundamentally, a Chinese EV costs 50% more here than it does in China and the subsidies they got from the CCP were to open assembly plants here. -

That’s the point, Toyota can’t build EV’s competitively. What do you do if you’re a legacy manufacturer losing sales to a technology you can’t compete with? Have you seen the Toyota bZ4x? Have you seen the price? -

JBChiangRai replied to Bandersnatch's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I don’t believe anything Toyota say, they are behind a lot of the misinformation behind anti-EV marketing. If they plan to make solid state batteries by 2027, where is the factory? Where is the lithium coming from? I think Toyota in 2027 will be doing exactly what they are doing now, buying batteries from BYD. Everything marketing related released by Toyota is basically saying don’t ever buy EV’s or buy later because something better is coming. And they are releasing marketing like this every few weeks. Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars, Hydrogen ICE, this week a Hydrogen ICE running on liquid hydrogen stored in the car at -253°C. It’s all nonsense. -

I wouldn’t classify HEV’s as EV’s unless they are PHEV’s. HEV’s are ICE vehicles with some clever marketing gimmick that give some improvement in mpg around town, but none on a longer run. The consumer often has no choice between ICE or HEV. You couldn’t be more wrong when you say Thailand is behind the curve on charging stations, we have lots of them and Thailand is one of the leading countries in the world and THE leading country in Asia. Most people on a long run don’t stop for more than 30-40 minutes at a charging station. It’s a non-issue. -

Very little of the water you can buy is anything other than RO water, all the cheap Thai brands are RO. I grant you Evian etc are spring water but they are massively more expensive.
