Mahidol University has issued a statement, saying it has nothing to do with claims by product advertisers that extracts from Fingerroot, or Chinese ginger (boesenbergia rotunda), can kill the virus or stop the spread of COVID-19 in humans.
@Natai Beach - Is this the Thai designed vaccine you were banking on? Or is there another one?

Clear to me and expected. Clear and accurate and honest reporting would have been a shock.
People just don't understand Thailand, or Asia for that matter. Westerners generally assume everyone is like us. It's arrogance, really.

There used to be a guy in the forums who would go out of his way to shill for Thailand, explaining in great detail why the government was ultra wealthy and had amongst the highest reserves in the world.
Wonder where all those guys are now?
So quiet.
Between no farangs coming, the THAI airways fiasco, the fact that the Thais are now forced to admit tourism is a MUCH larger part of the Thai economy, and the rampant corruption, they seem to be broke.

Every survey in the West shows that there is massive pent up demand for exotic foreign travel, and the savings to pay for it.
Thailand could starting ramping up back to mass tourism this summer if they simply announce that they will accept verifiably fully-innoculated visitors on the pre-pandemic visa terms (i.e. no tests, no quarantine, no paperwork, no special insurance etc). Each visitor would need to have credible verification that they received their final jab at least two weeks prior.
400 million people are fully-vaccinated, while another 400m have received a first jab and are waiting for their second. The supply is growing and we expect to have a billion fully-vaccinated humans by the end of June.
The current hold up is the official verification schemes. Israel launched theirs in February, the UK launched theirs earlier this month, and the EU are beta-testing theirs, individual governments will probably roll it out during July. All national schemes will provide the basic info that Thailand needs to know that the holder is not a biological threat to Thailand: date of shot(s) and type of vaccine(s).
To have any sort of high season this year, Thailand should announce during June that, from the second half of the year (July 1st), the doors are wide open to fully-vaccinated tourists who arrive on planes carrying only fully-vaccinated passengers and crew. They won't get anywhere near 2019 levels this year but it will be a start, will give them some sort of high season, will kickstart a complicated industry that has stalled badly, and will pre-empt regional competitors eager to leapfrog them.
Problem with this approach will inevitably be that vaccinated foreign tourists will still be carrying on occasion the virus. Maybe more virulent strains. Maybe even previously unknowns strains.
These can still start deadly clusters in the unvaccinated population.
Therefore the key is really that the 50 million or so Thais of age need to be fully vaccinated..
And we can all guess how long that will take. I'm guessing 3 years from when they actually start in earnest

Thailand has neither the motivation nor infrastructure to capture the employment statistic with any meaningful degree of accuracy. Thais don't claim jobless benefits, for example, because, for most Thais, there are no such benefits. Most Thais still work in the informal economy as another example.
There is no functional way for the government to capture employment statistics. They'd be wildly off - by tens of percent.
Like, the unemployment rate or marginal employment rate might be on the order of 20 or 30 or 40%.

BANGKOK (NNT) - Responding to concerns about the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline as the budget for the 2022 fiscal year is lower than the budget deficit, the government has confirmed that there are measures to support investment from other capital resources, and the issue will be clarified in the House of Representatives.

Its more important that everyone gets the first vaccine than some get both...
So, from that perspective the announcement makes sense.
But..... Just ensure there are sufficient doest with adequate distribution to ensure everyone has both doses with the correct internationally recognised time frame.
Why does Thailand have to go about everything in such a half arsed way then make these announcements as if its ok ???
A consistent reminder of the juvenile approach to accountability of those in charge.
And a regular, almost daily reminder of how poor the Thai education system is.

Oh, that can't be! We are told daily from many posters about Thailand masterful, world-class Covid response. It's among the best in the world.
It is very unusual in Thailand that anything fall behind schedule as Thais are world renown for punctuality.

I agree but not sure they care? Thailand is a smallish country in the global economy and not very significant in any important metric - other than rice and sex.
Thailand could easily support it's entire undeveloped, mostly agrarian economy with China and forsake the west almost entirely.
Again, the economy is not very productive, so not much slack to take up.
China will buy all the rice and durians, and the working girls will be all too happy to provide their services to Chinese men in place of us Farangs -- despite how much the girls have lied to us that they only like us big, fat Farangs.

Thai Rath had a feature that suggested foreigners - especially potential Chinese and Russian condo buyers - were desperate to come to Thailand to snap up property.
I called it many times, and even at the start of the pandemic.
Chinese will be looking to aggressively buy up whatever they can - including businesses (and even tourism focused businesses).
If the Thais incentivise people to come by loosening up the land ownership rules, the place will be overrun with PRC Chinese in the next 2-3 years.
All your favorite pubs will be converted into hot pot stalls and tea shops and other such nonsense.
Enjoy the country now whilst it's still possible.

Humans have free will, and it would be a bit pointless if God stepped in everytime someone did something that hurt another to stop it.
I'm not really into theology. But, why would a perfect being, omnipotent and "good" concoct such a system where people have free will to destroy themselves and others?
I've heard the rebuttals before - which usually go like this: "It is not for us mortals to understand our god" which I find objectionable

Yes, Thailand did a great job in the first two waves but failed badly in the third wave so stop patting yourself.
Other Asian countries like China, HK, Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore have much lower total virus count.
The vaccine rollout was also too slow and messy.
Please don't quote anything about China other than the fact that they lie on reflex, are never transparent and have clearly hid any damaging info from the international community.

Of course, it would be smart for any sex workers to receive the vaccine, but difficult in Thailand.
In countries where sex workers are registered as such, it's easy to prioritise them. However, in Thailand, there millions of women in the trade (overtly and covertly) but the Thai establishment would rather save face by pretending there is no prostitution problem in the country, so nobody is registered. And, even if they were, the Thais would lose face by making it known they are prioritising sex workers in preparation for the reopening the economy.
What would that say to the world about Thailand?
FACE rules all here. Not logic.

Surely if there was a God, all this death and destruction would not affect innocent people. There is no God, and the sooner we wake up from this ancient cartoonish nonsense, realize most people are inherently evil and selfish and protect ourselves accordingly, we will continue to suffer.

Just now, wprime said:Thailand did not have measurable excess deaths in earlier periods so it's highly unlikely that earlier numbers were underestimates to any significant degree.
Once again you are tricked by the same bias. The only info you have is the REPORTED info. If that is markedly incorrect, all your assumptions are also.
Even after so so so so many examples, even recently of the Thais trying to cover up the prison situation, so many people cannot comprehend this concept.
It's crazy

The 100,637 COVID cases Thailand has reported just since April 1 compares to the broader cumulative total of 129,500 now dating back to the start of the pandemic in early 2020.
In other words, Thailand has incurred more than three times as many COVID cases just in the past nearly two months as the country did (28,863) in the prior 15 months.

Gosh. It only means that if we are silly enough to believe the earlier numbers (or current ones, for that matter) are reasonably accurate.
