Today's smartphones can be a trouble saver.  Though not a hip user, I have learned the usefullness of calendar and note taking apps.  Most phones have a calendar app pre installed and if you enter a note for the date, say 5 days prior to your next 90 day, the phone will signal you and remind you.  I use it for my 90 day dates and any appointments more than a few days ahead.

Best get the google calendar from google play. It scans the web and instantly adds any appointments you have made eg flights, hotels etc. Plus adds all thai holidays , Google really is watching your every move

There's some stupid advice there.  Yes, currency exposure is a huge risk, more than inflation, but there isn't anything you can do about it unless you retire Ecuador or Panama.  No one in his right mind would consider transferring his assets into baht, which would be into a country in which he has neither a right to remain nor to transfer assets back to the home country.

General advice like this is seldom valuable.  Conditions change.  We have to be prepared to change with them.

Americans not so bad but the rest of the world would have made a killing on exchange rate had they either bought a well located condo or invested in the SET. Im heading back to oz for 12 months and I have my place rented out 40k/month in BAHT which is going to be great value when buying oz dollars

Had I kept everything at home I would have burnt up a lot money and it's only getting worse. Expats living on money invested in home countries are completely screwed (not so bad USA)

The Thais will throw you out and steal your condo nonsense has been thrown around for 20 years as its past down from hard core expats to Newbies eager to repeat

Peter’s email to a Sydney radio show yesterday: “My sole income is the age pension - due to no fault of my own. I have not used any heating for years. I live in a draughty old house and if I were to try to warm my house I would not be able to pay my rates or pay any other unavoidable bills. I eat as cheaply as possible and it’s been over six months since I’ve purchased solid meat. I prefer mince and sausages because of the reduced cost and then use them in some kind of casserole dish. I have never smoked or used alcohol. I do not ever go out to attend entertainment venues. As with other pensioners I do go to bed early and use the electric blanket to warm up. Due to the number of ongoing medical problems life is a struggle and the ever increasing costs of necessities is an unacceptable extra burden. No I do not use a mobile phone, my only extravagance is the internet on the ever unreliable NBN. Australians stand condemned for voting for governments local, state and federal that have devastated this once amazing country”.

Radio hosts on-air reply to Peter: “I think what Peter has done is give us an insight into how a lot of people live. Those of us who are lucky enough to have jobs and be a bit better off, probably don’t see all that often. They (people like Peter) are people who don’t complain, they don’t whinge, they go to bed early, they put on an extra jumper and so on because they can’t afford a lot of the things a lot of things that many of us take for granted. Thank you for your email Peter”.

Listen to the above (and other “lucky country” resident’s experiences of struggling to survive in Australia) here:

Doesn't sound right. A single man with some research shows and average of  $176/month for electricity about what Im paying here in bangkok. His pension is around $1700/month? . He makes no mention if he pays rent or owns the house.

Food is not that expensive, he could simply buy a slow cooker and buy the toughest cheapest meat he can find (turns out nice n soft) and throw it in with veges and its a fantastic dirt cheap meals for several days

He doesn't drink or smoke so that saves a lot of money. Hard to comment further without knowing housing arrangement. Doubt he is renting a whole house and if he is then there lies his problem, not a wise move

Basic (Electricity, Heating, Cooling, Water, Garbage) for 85m2 Apartment A$176.23 A$100.00 - A$340.00

How many times have I heard this?  "It's not your country"

We're fooling ourselves if we think because we have a visa, a Thai spouse, own a condo or pay rent that we have the the right to voice our concerns or dislikes.  Bad news... a foreigner will never have that prerogative. We will never be accepted or even adopted into the mainstream. Our role is to live simple and observe.  Sure, we can rattle our cans with our friends, but be careful to control your volume and content. The other phrase often muttered is "go back to your country". Of course, that may not always be an option.  Tread lightly.

Get real how many of us are going to record and sing anti Junta songs?

We have the pleasure of one of these lucky recipients of a pardon living nearby. He has started his own 'business' raising roosters and nobody is prepared to confront him, even the landlord has given up asking for rent. The noise is driving everyone nuts! After living here 15 years I am now forced to move, perhaps out of Thailand as the place seems to be going backwards (and it never got very advanced).

Would it not make more sense to build larger prisons?

    Or exterminate the filth?

leavin because of a chicken? very delicate soul..Some are just not cut out for it

  6. I give you history and they never kissed swastika quite the opposite and you give me some lame ass internet page labelled " is the Pm racist" LOL

Thais are blatantly racist but you seem happy living here. isn't that a tad hypocritical?

    No hard feelings [emoji6]

Once I got to 65 hanging out with 25 year old women plays no part in any of my thought process.

It's the WEATHER stupid.I can't think of a place in Europe that has really half decent weather in the Dec/Jan/Feb period Portugal is on the Atlantic even Crete sucks in winter. In Asia Bali it's the rainy season,India is great but maybe not if you have health or mobility issues but Goa is now overrun with tourists. If like me you want to be near the coast and are on a budget forgetting about P4P and the price of beer/alcohol and visiting during the European winter that seems to be a choice between Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, Sihanoukville has been destroyed first by the tourist invasion then the Chinese invasion. So it seems to me to be a straight choice between Vietnam and Thailand, even then what with the exchange rate and the threat that it may not improve but even worsen and budget flights charging for luggage and seat selection it's not looking good from my corner of the tourist market.

It can be done by taking out a 6 month lease or renting monthly on air bnb . The price is similar to full time rental and no contracts and then fly into thailand and do the same in winter

Flights are ok if you know departure date months in advance

    Best of both wolds
