  1. Where I am now renting I only get frontal sun until one and a half hour after sunrise, so I can be comfortable using only the ceiling fan. I don't even need it at night these days but this may change as nights get hotter. One thing I read about fans is that they're not good if the humidity emanating from your body has not escape to equilibrate so I leave the (netted!) windows wide open day and night. Using only a fan has some benefits compared to aircons: lower electricity cost and lower noise, less of a thermal shock when you go out. I find ceiling fans much better than standing fans. A ceiling fan will keep the air in gentle motion rather than blow in your face. It doesn't take up useful space. It is less likely to stir up dust. Regarding positioning, I've noticed ceiling fans are often slightly offset relative to the bed, ie not placed directly above the bed. That must be to avoid injury in case you want to stand up on the bed. Ceiling fans have a unique colonial flair aircons don't have.
  2. Only Fox News? The fakestream media is not limited to Fox News.
  3. If I'm not mistaken medical deontology dictates proactive surgery in case of suspected appendicitis, even if some uncertainty remains. Not operating asap in case of appendicitis is a risk doctors should not be willing to take. I remember reading that the symtoms of appendicitis can be deceitful, with pain even materialising at the wrong side of the abdomen.
  4. This woman wants Thai justice to apply to her: jail time for 2 pills of methylated amphetamine, scot-free for killing pedestrians while behind the wheel.
  5. I wish that were true. Alas it isn't.
  6. Yes, a safety box at front desk is the safest of all. Very handy for things you don't use often like passports, emergency cash, credit cards, banking smartphone. Hardly practical for something you will use every day like maybe a laptop or a smartphone you use nearly all the time.
  7. Laptops are not much in demand among petty thieves. I've left my laptop in condos and hotel rooms in Thailand for years. I don't see it as a risk. Not many 3 and 4* hotels have in-room safes big enough.
  8. If I'm not mistaken, this same Thaksin is in favour of repealing the legalisation of cannabis. Opportunism 100%. The government now in power has my vote for having the balls to do what most democratic governments will shy from, ie legalise a harmless herb that should never have landed on the statute books.
  9. In most EU countries rental income in the EU country is always subject to tax in that EU country even if you reside in Thailand. In Germany they have a word for it that means "reduced tax liability" (geschränkt steuerpflichtig). As to revenues like pensions generated in the EU country, you get taxed by the EU country if the pension is subject to a witholding tax in said EU country which is the case of "state pensions". A private pension is another matter, it can sometimes be transferred free of tax and it's then up to the recipient to declare it for taxation in Thailand (or not). Thailand's reluctance to tax should be Thailand's business, not the UK's or the EU countries'. As to capital gains eg on the sale of shares/stocks held in an EU bank, they are to be declared and taxed (or not) in the country of residence which is in our case Thailand. Dividends however are always subject to tax first at source in the country of the company paying the dividend, second in the country of residence if said country has a tax on dividends. I understand the UK has not taxes on dividends, that's why BP, before it got clobbered because of the war in Russia and the windfall tax, was such a good stock to own if you lived in Thailand. I have a Thai TIN which I filed with my EU banks in order to give them something to chew on. TINs are used withing the CRS if I'm not mistaken. This means infos on my finances in Thailand could be reported to the EU countries by Thailand (or sollicited by the EU countries from Thailand?) using my TIN number. I don't think Thailand can be bothered at this stage to send reports though.
  10. I believe in God coz otherwise I would be sad. I want there to be another life as this life of mine is not good and I work a lot to earn little. I don't want to grow old and die just like that. Also, I want to be reunited with my mum and dad coz when they died I cried a lot. If there's not God there would not be another life after I die would there? And I would never see my mum & dad again! I also want there to be another life so that the people who have all the money and can do whatever they want and have all the fun in the world go to hell while I can go to paradise, because otherwise it wouldn't be fair. This is why I believe in God, because if there is no God I don't feel good at all about myself and other people and that's why I'm sure there is a God and I believe in him.
  11. Relax! Once you realise it's legal it ceases to be a nuisance. Would it be better if he didn't stop smoking tobacco? I bet it would, lol.
  12. I wonder if he still has the physical stamina for the part at his age. The part contained some exerting antics.
  13. So you read the hachet job the Guardian's and the Southern Poverty Law Center's femihags wrote in Wikipedia about the Red Pill. But do you mean unlike those "losers", you could attract a (half-way good-looking) GF in your own country but you still want to live in Thailand? What is is that brings you here? The sea-food dishes where seafood got replaced by mushrooms and chunks of ginger? The meat and fish dishes with mostly bones, skin and cartilage and harly any meat or fish? The scorching heat? The tone-deaf eardrum-piercing music? The road carnage? The plastic dystopia? Just curious. There are some communities out there like the Incels, the Red Pill etc. actually fighting for men's (sexual) rights and getting sued and banned for it. Signing your rights away in your home country sex-prison, then taking refuge in Thailand or the Philippines is no act of bravery. It still works somehow but not for long.
  14. สิทธิเก็บกิน This is the title of the relevant Wikipedia article in Thai. Tip: find the Wikipedia article in English, then click languages and choose Thai. It doesn't always work as the Wikipedia articles are not fully liked between languages and some languages are sometimes still missing for a given article, but it's worth a try. The Thai litterally means "the thing you keep to eat". https://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/สิทธิเก็บกิน
  15. The Bangkok Bank app is ok. It also works on WiFi and if I remember right, also when the VPN is on. What I resent about such "progress" is that you are left high and dry until you manage to switch to the new system.
  16. That's true. On the other hand, where have tobacco smokers been all these decades? Not demonstrating for cannabis legalisation for sure. Rather, quite comfortable with cannabis users being jailed or sentenced to death for "using drugs". Maybe it's now cannabis users' turn to be selfish and hypocritical.
  17. Withholding tax on dividends is always paid to the country where the dividend originates. For example if you own Apple stocks, the dividend paid by Apple will be subject to US 30% dividend tax. If there is an agreement between the EU country and the US, this will result in 15% paid to the US and 15% paid to the EU country if you are taxable in the EU country and provided you have filed the W-8BEN form with your bank. If you are not taxable in the EU country, you'll only pay 15% to the US. The W-8BEN form requires a Thai TIN if you're declaring Thailand as your residence. It also requires your postal (mail) address to be in the same country as your home address, ie both addresses in Thailand. Capital gains on selling stocks are only taxable in the country where you are a resident. If the latter country turns a blind eye, like Thailand does, this means 0% on capital gains.
  18. New studies see some connection/correlation between hearing loss and dementia and recommend people with hearing loss to get fitted with hearing aids. However, no one knows if being hard of hearing is what causes dementia or if using hearing aids can delay the onset of dementia. There are a few online apps on the web to test your hearing. The apps come up with some kind of audiometry results. No alternative to being tested by a professional though. Having your own voice amplified by the hearing aids is not bad. It helps you adjust and correct your own speech (your own tones in Thai?).
  19. I suggest they should use the satellite to spot illegal burning and do something asap about it.
  20. I think the finger print system is Samsung's, not the bank's. It is called Samsung pass. The app is as safe (or no more safe than) your smartphone when it is logged off.
  21. Nothing wrong with medical insurance. What I object too is giving money to a useless Thai insurance on top of my more than adequate worldwide coverage.
  22. Use a broker. Two I know are good are Phillip and Bualuang. Fees are very low when you sell or buy in Thailand. If an order is not carried out (limit too high/low) the fee is small. There are some good value stocks with high dividends. If you hold cash with the broker you earn interests like you would on a fixed savings account with a bank.
  23. Vaccination is nothing, especially if it doesn't have to be recent. I'm more worried about the insurance part, if what is meant is in the future my having to waste money on a Thai insurance I don't need.
