Is it possible to get your wife to go into counseling with you?

Certainly you have to protect your daughter from this behavior but it would be best, if at all possible, to save the marriage.

It will boil down to your wife understanding this is wrong and finding it in herself to assert.  Which may be complex if she suffered abuse herself as a child.

For my Thai son's in-laws Sheryl's last paragraph is very meaningful.

Son's Thai wife has many brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Together they are a totally dysfunctional large family, many young children and mid/older teenagers, 99% of who get continuously passed around the adults, and all of them missing months of school/changes of school regularly, no monitoring of homework or what they do at/after school etc.

My son, who has some clout because of his occupation and education status made it clear that his kids will live with him and his life until they adults etc., and that nobody was allowed to touch* them or take them anywhere. (*several suggestions in the past of fondling etc.)

All came to a head when they all visited son's MIL's farm in upper central Thailand about 2 years back. Every time they visited the farm my son monitored his kids every minute to ensure they were safe etc., but suddenly he couldn't find his 7 year old daughter.

He quickly asked around, nobody knew where she was they son picked up some comments that suggested she had been taken away in rear of a pick up owned by a much older aunty.

Son called the aunty (a spinster) who admitted she had taken his daughter because she wanted a little girl.

Son told her 'come back immediately, not here within 1 hour or so and he would call the police'. She did return with the girl.

All of the gathered adults had heard the phone call and attached my son 'your not fair, aunty has no kids, she's lonely and she wants a daughter, why can't you give her 1 kid'.

I hate to say this but put anyone else in to run the thing except a person who's nationality is the same as the carriers name and who isnt beholden to anyone there or in the government and tasked specifically to turn it around and their renumeration based soley on their success.

Sooo it will be bankrupcy or bailout with the cycle of abuse and missmanagment uninterupted. Wash, rinse and repeat!

Sure, all good points, but there are so many roadblocks already deeply entrenched in the 'normal' behaviors, attitudes and operating processes of Thai Inter., backed by very powerful factions inside Thai and in broader government and in sectors of the outside community.

These folks have enormous power, and they will have no hesitation to intimidate and remove anybody/team who try to make change. And they don't care, and they don't consider the bigger picture of what it should be.

For many years I was a local director of a famous and very credible international management consulting company in Bkk, we won many large/very large consulting projects to help Thai redesign, rebuild various parts of the organization (the fees charged for these projects were typically US$5, 10, 20million and more.

Progressively through each part of the projects my senior Thai staff made very detailed presentations by sectors of what must change (as agreed in the detailed project contract and deliverables) and why, and what each sector must look like after the change had been implemented, and what the new outputs must be/what they must look like etc., etc.

Although senior/mid-level managers had all been instructed to closely manage the changes in their sectors many never turned up, some came but just sat outside the room drinking coffee, some sat in the conference room and chatted loudly with friends sitting near or sitting on the other side of the room, and they walked in and out all the time .

Bottom line, zero to very little change ever happened. We were told again and again to never approach individual managers (any level) to query their progress etc.

shocker; politicians distorting facts ? bald-faced professional liars, the bunch

Is here any evidence/proof that the so called Progressive Movement' planned and/or executed these images onto buildings?

I haven't seen any reports as such, in fact I've been wondering how/what technology the people involved were using to project the images? Has anybody noticed and specific reports detailing how the images have been projected/broadcast?

    1. You think you can get a test in Thailand for use to travel to Thailand?

Sorry, my mistake, I mean standard Covid 19 test that would probably be accepted when the passenger arrives in another country. I realize there are many Covid tests and what's accepted when the passenger arrives abroad will be something of a gamble.

Thanks. if on Age Pension it's the line item I mentioned above if you exceed a certain annual spend - from memory it's $700. Official term is "PBS Safety Net Threshold".

Are you aware of any other allowances (other than the Energy Allowance) normally paid with the OAP when the pensioner is in Australia which are not paid when the pensioner receives the pension payments permanently abroad?

I receive the Age Pension in Oz and have never received or heard of a 'medicines allowance'. For medicines on the PBS i pay $5.60 per prescription, once the annual spend exceeds $700 (?) PBS prescriptions are provided at no charge. The energy allowance is currently $14.10 per fortnight for a single person and not paid if receiving Age Pension overseas.

Something to share re Pharmaceutical Allowance, please see the link: https://www.dss.gov.au/about-the-department/benefits-payments/pharmaceutical-allowance

If you've lived all of your life, except for some overseas holidays; you definitely do get full portability upon receipt of Aged Pension.

The 6 weeks relates to how long your full pension will be paid. After 6 weeks you only lose the energy supplement, not the Pension.

Yes; the 2 years starts after you return to Oz permanently. Eg. If you return and re-establish residency 6 months prior to being granted the pension, your full portability starts 18 months after you receive it.

You don't have to make an application to receive full portability; just call International Services in Hobart to confirm your pension won't be unexpectedly cut off and your 2 year sentence has now been expunged. There is no need to request permission to leave Oz permanently. It is a right enshrined in legislation. However by advising you will be leaving permanently, your payment will be lowered upon leaving to the post 6 week amount, which is currently $884.80. Approx. $100 shy of the full basic payment in Oz.

Thanks for all these answers, much appreciated.

You mention that the pension payment amount will be (because allowances not paid) reduced by $100-. Is that the energy supplement? What about the chemist/medicines allowance (which I think is approx $13 a fortnight), is that also not paid abroad?

In my case this one might be a bit more complicated because I also receive a DVA Disability pension, already transferred abroad for many years. So I'm wondering whether that makes and difference to the chemist/medicines allowance?

I don't think that's what the guy meant, hard to tell, it was a vague  remark. Doesn't matter who achieves the results, it's the results that matter, 12 months to a year most likely, and that is fast tracking it.

    '... 12 months to a year'.

Not familiar with that time span.

    I don't know.

Was advised a long time ago that any traffic accident no matter what is your fault.

Why? Because you are here.  If you were not here it would not have happened.

Seems to be supported by some I know who have been in accidents.

So, you called for the sand and should have been present to control the tipping.

Due to these factors, the fault will be yours.

Your wife seems to understand the Thai thinking on these issues.

Not saying any of it is right, just the way it is.

True, it's normal to completely avoid anything which even slightly looks like confrontation, to avoid negotiations with neighbors, and with anybody.

If you cared, you'd try and rally around the president on the issue that is current and important, and try to get your local representatives to do the same thing, but you know, narratives and partisan politics will never allow that to happen.

'...partisan politics...', yes alive and well, already for many decades and strongly fueled by Trump.

But seems to be it's strongly me, me me politics.

There is no hard and fast rule etc. - it all comes down to what CLink decide at the time in in that situation.

Australians can go overseas and when they do, their pension payments drop after 6 weeks.

If you maintain an address, bank account, drivers licence, etc etc - you are still a resident, unless you have decided to move overseas permanently.   You got the payment because you are still an Aust resident probably.

If you are OK with that, then you need to be on an extended holiday overseas. What can happen is that after 2 years a person overseas who does not return can be deemed to be a non-resident - if CLink believes you have no intention to return.  That is the key - having a residence and all that other stuff, and intention to come back.  So if you now have no intention of returning, what I would suggest is that you contact CLink later (before 2 years is up), and advise them that after careful consideration you are considering staying in Thailand for a while - ask will that affect my pension payments if I do that?? ????

Make sure you state that you have been in many places in Thailand, and that you have not set up a home, and you have not lived in any one place for a long time, and that you are now considering getting a permanent place, but you would like to know if that would affect your pension payments and other benefits (ask about Medicare too).

Sure but keep in mind that Australians who have been living abroad (not necessarily at one fixed address) can return to live in Australia for 2 years to 're-establish residency', then they are entitled to 'portability' and can receive their pension into a local bank acct, anywhere in the world.

Obviously there are other items involved to re-establish residency and to gain portability. And pensioners living abroad don't get some extra allowance such as the energy allowance.

I can only reply for BKK Bank but for that I needed to contact the phone number you will find on the back of the card - no good going to a local brance as they cannot do anything

Was surprise how helpful they were via the phone !

Many years back I had several large amounts on my VISA card (issued thru UOB). I called UOB and they reacted quickly and kept in contact and they obviously quickly contacted Visa who also quickly contacted me to get further information, Within a few days VISA advised they had been in contact with the police and the scammer had been charged. At same time UOB advised the charges had been reversed and they shared an amended account by e.mail.

Both VISA and UOB reminded me to contact them very quickly if any suspicious items.

VISA also mentioned, politely, that if there are 3 disputed charges within a 1 year period each case is investigated using their normal processes but the card holder is also flagged as the possible scammer and is quickly investigated.
