I'm not sure that I want change in Thailand , especially as I have no idea what that change will be, ,Since I first came here 30 or more years ago I have seen little in the way of changes ,implemented by any administration , that have been of much if any benefit to the population , with the exception of the 30bt medical scheme , and no changes at all that have benefitted us, the ex-pats, The current proposed tax changes are a fine example of things "not improving" along with the recent banking issues. It goes even deeper than that people just generally do not trust strangers, and never have done, its a basic human instinct necessary for , as you correctly said, survival, We only have to look at the warring tribes in africa to see it at its most basic fundamental level I mean you would not be welcoming of neighbours who are liable to attack your village and steal the women. In the western world , using the UK for example , many remote village are still wary of strangers ( possibly for the same reason lol) people from the north and south also have their differences and don't even mention scousers We use our instincts to identify all strangers we encounter either by appearance or their language and dialect and subconsciously we assess the the level of threat , if any , that they may pose Like it or not it needs to be accepted that this is a deep rooted survival instinct hard wired into our brains just like a fear of snakes or the urge to procreate There are some who think that forcing us to live in multicultural societies will erase this instinct and make us all live more happily together , it will not , it just keeps everybody in a constant state of unease but whether they know it or not is a different matter, Those who would be honest about how they feel are condemned as "racist" which is a completely made up word
