  1. Hi rwd!

    Just went through the process you are starting. Moved to Khanom 3 months ago, but started looking 6 months ago with similar requirements to yours.

    First thought, other than the resorts we have yet to see a private swimming pool at a house here. The sea is your pool!

    Is your wife Thai or farang? I ask because mine is farang and although our Thai is reasonable, most landlords speak NO english and we found it easier to bring a native Thai speaking local with us when viewing houses/negotiating.

    Like you we had a house-full of furniture already and it was very difficult to find an unfurnished home. We ended up taking a 'lightly' furnished house and then asking the landlord to remove their furnishings.

    There is NO issue with internet here. Phone lined based ADSL and stand alone fibre-optic are readily available and speeds are very good considering the light load on the infrastructure compared to busier expat/tourist locations.

    We found that internet searches for houses in Khanom was an exercise in futility at best and a portal to some nasty scams at worst… best to get your feet on the ground here and poke around all the sois yourself in January.

    There are definitely homes here that would meet your requirements, but not that many, and they tend to be rented VERY quickly. We would be happy to send you some photos/phone numbers for available places via PM if you'd like to have an idea of what's available before you come in January.

  2. Just a quick FYI re: renewing retirement visa at the Nakhorn Si Thammarat immigration office. I did mine on 28 October 2013.

    Required:

    1. Copy of your passport - ALL PAGES which have any stamp or pic or writing on them;

    2. 4cm x 6cm passport photo;

    3. Copy of rental contract for house;

    4. Map to house (Google map OR hand drawn);

    5. Copy of ID card of house owner;

    6. Photo of you with house owner inside AND outside house;

    7. Letter from your consulate acknowledging your income back home;

    8. Immigration form 87 completed

    COST 1900 baht

    If you require multiple entry:

    1. Extra copy of picture page of your passport;

    2. 4cm x 6cm passport photo;

    2. Copy of NEW visa page in your passport - yes once you get your visas you must leave immigration, go to the copy shop about 300m NORTH of the immigration office, then return;

    3. Immigration form 7 completed

    COST 3800 baht

    Easy peasy and a pleasant experience… YOUR experience/requirements may vary!! (* depending on whether you rent/own or if you are married to a Thai or if you require bank acknowledgement of funds in Thai bank)

  3. Well overall the VLC and the AC provided some spectacular designs, racing and controversy! IMHO overall a very successful event. I hope they stick close to the current format for the AC35 - the best designers, shore crews, and sailors on the fastest most technologically advanced boats - what's not to like? I do see an opportunity for some enterprising promoter to develop an offshore monohull format regatta to appease the AC purists though...

  4. The International Americas Cup Class was a class of racing yacht that was developed for the America's Cup between 1992 and 2007. These yachts, while not identical, were all designed to the same formula to offer designers the freedom to experiment whilst keeping the boats sufficiently comparable to race in real time. The class was established for the 1992 America's Cup because of perceived shortcomings of the 12-metre class, which had been used in the America's Cup since 1958.

    If your statement is true, how come, in 1988, a catamaran ended up racing a giant of a sloop?

    The sloop got predictably slaughtered.

    The '92-'07 era came about because of the issues surrounding the '88 AC.

  5. A brief aside.

    I know a farrang teenager who is kind of 'stuck' here. He works for a Thai during the day doing deliveries, and at night bussing in a Thai bar. This is NOT in Phuket, Pattaya, or Samui it is 'up country'. Everyone, both Thai and farrang in the village know it - cops, mayor, big dicks... No one gives a shizzle, in fact everyone does anything they can to help. He's just another kid trying to get by. All of Thailand ain't the shite-hole of the big three tourist dollar vacuums ya know.

  6. I don't get you lot... I luv my herbal remedies and really, really wish it was legal. But it ain't. I love workin'

     on my bikes, cars, house, boat... wish it was legal but I know it ain't! Doesn't stop me, never had an issue. But at least I know the laws of the country I'm living in. There seems to be a whack of y'all out there that have absolutely no concept of the laws of this sovereign nation and absolutely no concept of your lot as an expat/immigrant. Thailand ain't Kansas kids and no-freakin-body here could give a shite what you think. Kinda like life for Chinese, Irish, Italian, eastern european immigrants to the good ol' USA around 1900...

  7. sorry guys but it is a load of crap, do any of you know how this race came about. It has been butchered to make it a tv spectacle to make money, none of these boats would be even capable of going out to sea as they would fold in a decent swell, This is supposed to be an open water race but its become a spectacle race only, kind of like turning a cross country car race into a circuit motorbike race so they can get more spoectators/money/profit, its bullshit.

    there is a difference between sport and entertainment. Sport is a physical activity that people participate in, what you do is sit on your arse and watch others do things, not sport at all. If they change a marathon so it had to be done in a go cart that would be more exciting too, changing sport entirely due to making it more exciting/ a profit/ or money is not sport, anyone that thinks so is showing their lack of intelligence big time. Also shows that you have no real idea of what the original americas cup was all about,

    yes but it no longer has anything to do with what the original race was about so it is a farce and should be renamed entirely, it is not the americas cup, it is the boat developers cup.

    Hmmm, maybe a very brief recap of the history of tech change in the AC is required.

    In 1887, the NYYC adopted the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club's rating rule, in which Bristol, RI naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff found loopholes that he would use to make dramatic improvements in yacht design and to shape the America's Cup's largest and most extreme contenders. Both Herreshoff and Watson proceeded to merge Yankee sloop design and British cutter design to make very deep S-shape fin-keeled hulls. Using steel, tobin bronze, aluminium, and even nickel for novel construction, they significantly lengthened bow and stern overhangs, further extending the sailing waterline as their boats heeled over, thus increasing their speed.
    In 1929 rule changes permitted the bermuda rig to replace the gaff rig.
    The J-class yachts from the 1930s remained the default for the Cup, but post-war economic realities meant that no one could afford to challenge in this hugely expensive class. As twenty years had passed since the last challenge, the NYYC looked for a cheaper alternative in order to restart interest in the Cup. In 1956 Henry Sears[31] led an effort to replace the J-class yachts with 12-metre class yachts, which are approximately 65 to 75 feet (20 to 23 m) in overall length.
    Technology was now playing an increasing role in yacht design. The 1983 winner, Australia II, had sported the revolutionary winged keel, and the New Zealand boat that Conner had beaten in the Louis Vuitton Cup final in Fremantle was the first 12-metre class to have a hull of fiberglass, rather than aluminum or wood.
    Also, i believe that the hosting club can choose near or off shore as they desire.
  8. With the paperwork from the parents he would be a custodian/caretaker of the child in accordence with the law.

    There is no ned to take parental rights away from the parents, which would be involved with becoming a legal guardian.

    My thought was TIT... custodian/caretaker in accordance with the law may be fine and dandy in the developed world but getting a Thai bureaucrat to understand... maybe not. Becoming legal guardian for a year would eliminate ANY issues with being in a developing country with the lad for a year.

  9. Can't believe no one has commented on this yet. The first four races this past weekend were outstanding! The new AC72s are like nothing you've seen before (unless you've been following their development ;0). 80, yes 80kh/h 'hull' (foil) speed... fascinating to see the boats AND the racing has been compelling as well.

    Anyone can watch. Race schedule here: http://www.americascup.com/en/schedules/races

    All action is live on You Tube and available for watching any time later here: http://www.youtube.com/user/AmericasCup

    The first four races are available complete or as highlight package.

    Kiwi's you should be proud - yer lads are doing very well!

  10. Interesting thread and some very interesting points all around. To do this properly for a whole year I believe the OP should be made the child's legal guardian. He could then make all decisions in a timely fashion AND the lad could follow his education visa as a dependent.

    Removing the child from a potentially bad situation is not a bad thing, even if there is an educational cost.

  11. This week I have been shown a "5" year driving licence and the dates on the card are for 5 1/2 years.

    Learn something new every day, unless you in the education system then thats another question.

    That is totally normal. Your one year license is valid one year from when you get it. Five year license is normalised to your birthday so any difference between date of expiry of one year license and your birthday is given as 'extra' time on your FIRST five year license. My first five year was five years + ten months.

    And on your consecutive licenses as well, just renew after your birthday and you get almost 6 years.

    Dam. I got my second five year in June and went on my b-day... If I waited a week I coulda had six! Thanks for the info SL.

  13. 25,000 for year one, then 15,000 pert year after... WOW!!

    Having dumped cable (Rawai) and satellite (True) a few years back I find that price stunningly high for what's available (yes I know Astro's selection is better).

    I'm now a torrent junkie and free from cable/satellite's csi/law and order-fest! I now watch Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Downton Abbey, etc within twelve hours of my NA/Euro compatriots in full high def.

    Live sports (MotoGP, F1, NHL ice hockey, rugby) all from free web feeds.

    Cut the cable guys you're getting milked!

  14. We found a number of suitable houses in different price ranges (up to about 20,000 b/m), but picked an 'entry level' one bedroom beach house near Jam Bay. Less than 6000 baht/month, city water, internet, unfurnished (we have plenty of furniture) and if it turns out we don't like it we can upgrade or move elsewhere...

    Mike did you find anything similar in that price range- I am looking for 3 month rent until my house finished.

    Hi Steve. Yeah there are a lot of properties available from 6,000 to 15,000 per month, depending on what you are looking for. We found it best to troll the beach road (or other suitable sois) for phone numbers and call (online availability sucks). Best to have a native Thai language speaker with you and making the calls. Good luck!

  15. Look nice;-) But I guess this is a VERY small town? How about Surat Thani City?

    Maybe you should be more clear about what you are asking. Khanom is everything Samui is not but with a deserted beach. What exactly are you asking for? Udon Thani (IHMO - the butt-ugliest town is Thailand) with a beach?

  16. I think 'cheap would be my price range' put folks off. Just saying (I don't have a truck}

    I see what you mean, I was being flippant... How's, 'Going rate works for me'!! The 'cheap would be in my price range' was meant to say any old bashed up work truck would be fine!
