  1. I think their charter is more based towards targeted enforcement through investigation, rather than random stops of pedestrians.
  2. The Royal Thai Police have an admin section, so I suppose they are law enforcement also. They also employ cleaners, so I guess that makes them law enforcement as well. ???? I'm ex SAS. ???? So, while they are doing random stops of people in the nightlife area, an expat overstayer in Pattaya, who has an electric account in his name for his condo that he resides in, and pays the bill on time, doesn't even get a knock on the door, and you don't think Immigration Officers patrolling around Tree Town is part of a bigger agenda attached to the 2am closing crackdown? Seriously?
  3. They should be doing more targeted investigative work, not random stops of people in the middle of a tourist area. It's about a better use of resources. To my knowledge, overstaying is not a criminal offense. An overstayer is deported, not charged, sentenced and deported. So they are not exactly law enforcement, are they?
  4. And here I was thinking it was all about the police showing symptoms of suffering from "tea" withdrawals. ????
  5. I agree, and it's not a serious attempt at detecting overstayers. It's part of a bigger agenda that involves police also. If they were serious about catching overstayers, one of the simplest ways would be to track their mobile phone.
  6. The percentages are debatable, but I would say the percentage of failed businesses here, historically, is a lot higher, by a long way, to those that are successful. Are you suggesting successful businesses, historically, outnumber failed businesses?
  7. I watched them stop a few people. There were a couple of guys that were detained for around 15 minutes. Would you be happy having a 15 minute interaction with authorities during a night out on your overseas holiday? Many tourists are from countries where police are feared. The psychological impact on those tourists would be greater then on western tourists. As for safety, they were immigration officers, not police. So if some yabba taking, farang hating security guards started beating up a tourist in a bar, I doubt immigration officers would step in.
  8. The percentage of failed bars to successful bars does not put the odds in favor of opening a bar here.
  9. Perhaps there might be some Russian owned super yachts and private jets parked up in Thailand, with Thailand unwilling to cooperate with global authorities for seizing such assets.
  10. How can he walk away from 5 months left of a 12 month lease on a beer bar, and what about that bamboo furniture, fan, and small TV in the photo? You just can't walk away from such a large investment. It's worth fighting for. ????
  11. I was in Tree Town a few nights ago and there was a squad of around 20 immigration officers on patrol, all dressed in black. They were actively stopping people and speaking with them. It's not a good look.
  12. I agree, but I would not be surprised if they start "fining" tourists for being in a bar / club after 2am. Currently, if you do not take drugs, and are not an overstay, you are released soon after the raid. No money in that for police.
  13. True, and there are some very good Thai polishers out there. It cums with experience, a lot of experience. ????
  14. A vested interest doesn't always mean a financial interest. As expats in Pattaya, we enjoy things from our various home countries, particularly the food, because of the tourism industry here. Eg. a Sunday roast. One only has to look at Sihanookville Cambodia, once the westerners were pushed out, to see what's available for western expats there now - zero.
  15. If the 2am crackdown doesn't work for police, I wonder before how long their next crackdown will be on pool table licenses, dart board licenses, guest house licenses, hotel licenses, fire escapes etc etc. The police here are holding Thailand's tourism industry to ransom, via hospitality establishments.
  16. Not a fight, just a "misunderstanding." Tourists can feel safer now. ????
  17. Most passports are only valid for 10 years. There's every chance he has a new passport, which means a new passport number. Did he have a marriage visa when they were together?
  18. I have never met any expats in Thailand that have ever admitted to doing anything wrong. ????

    Seahorse Ferry

I started to become suspicious about "someone's" efforts with the company several posts back. Some members have called it "bad luck" but with a project this size, it should not be about luck, but more to do with proper due diligence. There have been cases of guys skimming off the top of projects here, to fund their stay in Thailand, and also prolonging completion. My posts on this is not about the mechanical failure, but more to do with the chosen routes, lack of market research, lack of local consultation etc. steve187, how many more "incidents" of "bad luck" would you have to read about before YOU start to wonder if something more is going on?
