  1. I work at Thammasat and I am switching faculties within Thammasat and signing a new contract. This will mean canceling my work permit from the old faculty and doing a new one with the new faculty. I am not sure if they understand the process. I am assuming this means cancelling my visa extension and doing a visa extension new also? My current extension expires in June and the new contract with the new faculty will run until October. Is this correct? 1. Cancel work permit with old faculty at the labor office and on the same day go to immigration, cancel visa extension and get new visa extension until the end of the new contract. 2. Then go to immigration to apply for a new work permit. They will prepare all documents for me, but previously told me I should cancel the old work permit first and then apply for the new one within 21 days, which sounded seriously wrong to me. Thanks.
  2. A few years ago I lived in the center of Bangkok on the 6th floor of a condo surrounded by other high rise condos. The security guards at the condo next door started keeping roosters (I don't know why...). They woke me up every morning starting at around 4 am. I complained to the management of their building. Ignored. I complained to the management of my building. They patiently and condescendingly explained to me that Thai people like to hear roosters in the morning because it reminds them of living in the country.
  3. My country elected Donald Trump president. ???? But I appreciate your point!
  4. The reason woke has become political is because one political party in the USA does not want you talking about things like military spending or income inequality, or subsidizing corporate employees with food stamps because they are not paid a living wage or tax policy that benefits the wealthiest in the country. Etc. Etc. Etc. It's a problem created as a distraction. Yeah there are some people that are extreme. Just let it be.
  5. You now, when you stop talking about public policy you agree or disagree with and engage only in character assassination you are doing just what your masters want. And the public policy your masters want is specifically intended to increase the wealth and power of the wealthy and powerful and keep you slaves.
  6. http://langhub.com/en-th/thai-expat-news/483-thai-rock-star-convicted-of-statutory-rape#:~:text=Bangkok's Criminal Court on Wednesday, pleaded guilty of the charge. I had to Google Big Ass Rape to find this old story. I can't unsee it.... Anyway, the compound offense is not exactly statutory rape, as the article says. I'm sure the law has been used a few times to force the guy to marry the girl he got pregnant. It's an old law and by the way, it doesn't go both ways. Only men can prosecuted. A compoundable offense means that the decision to prosecute is up to the victim, not the public prosecutor.
  7. Grab really annoys me with their pretense of marketing to English speakers. A little bit is in English and now most menu items are Google translated but most information and help is in Thai. (I know I live in Thailand, but thanks for the pointing that out!) It's hard to understand why they don't hire a couple of translators to make the experience farang friendlier, but they have clearly done a cost/benefit analysis and decided it just ain't worth it.
  8. You may wonder, if the age of consent is 15 and she is 16 and consented how could he have committed a crime? The answer, as I understand it, is that there was literally no crime, UNTIL, the parents of the girl filed a complaint with the police.
  9. My experience in Thailand is the manufacture/distributor's service center provides the best service at a reasonable price. This seems not to be true in the USA, where I am from, but I have had nothing but good service from Samsung, Siemens, Electrolux, etc.
  10. Trying to get someone here to recommend a specific dentist here is like pulling teeth. I recommend Zmile Dental Clinic in Chiang Mai and the female dentist who is the owner. She went to dental school in the USA and practiced there as well. Speaks perfect English. Unfortunately I have forgotten her name. She spent 30 minutes with me discussing my dental issues and concluded that no work was needed now. There was no charge. It was clear to me that she is practicing at a high ethical level. And Chiang Mai is a nice place to stay and visit! https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089101495989&locale=hi_IN&paipv=0&eav=AfYq9usd6jgZ3jj6UFgLdhlJ1fzElBKUwmFeU2W5Yy7OJPzCTMfxIO_HdwprQpWUm2I
  11. That used to be common with new bike purchases (one year of 1st class insurance), but it does not seem to be so anymore.
  12. I wonder if that fake news story was planted by someone that wanted to increase the value of their condo for a pending sale. That's pure speculation. Could be some internal organizational strife being played out. Or just kids, them damn kids!
  13. Has the Pink Line monorail to the Changwattana government complex opened? I saw an article that said test runs started last week but it was unclear if all stations were open or if they would be open on 1 September. It will be nice to avoid the taxi drivers there as well as the horrible traffic in the afternoon.
  14. I stayed in an Airbnb recently that had a Samsung washer/dryer all in one. My hopes were low as my previous experience was hours long cycles yielding damp clothes, but the Samsung worked perfectly and quickly. I was pleasantly surprised.
  15. Oh damn. I didn't even think about that and I just payed them. OK. It is in Thai and English!
  16. Thought I would give Siemens service center a try based on the high quality of their website https://www.siemens-home.bsh-group.in.th/repair The customer service rep I spoke with was quite helpful and ultimately offered me a similar Bosch washer for 12,500 baht which seemed reasonable. So I am set and thanks for your suggestions. Bosch WAJ20170TH - An older model, I think, but that is OK.
  17. Thanks. That will work fine. I just have to find it at one of the stores that will install it.
  18. I'm sure it could be fixed. All it needs is drum bearings I think but she wants to keep life simple and buy a new one.
  19. I called them the other day to ask where to drop my Honda Wave off since I was taking the train to Chiang Mai. Drop off the bike at the Bang Sue station "across the street" I was told. Not sure what means exactly as I have never been there and decided not to take the trip. Call 1690 for excellent customer service in great English!
  20. The washing machine in my rented condo needs replacement and the owner asked me to buy a new one, up to 20,000 baht and deduct it from my rent. I was happy with my old one, which was a Siemens front loader with temperature settings up to 90 degrees. Any suggestions for a new one? The Siemens is no longer available and the few other Siemens models I see online are quite expensive. I would be happy to spend closer to 10,000 baht to keep the owner happy. She has been good about everything over the years. Thanks.
