  1. Often wondered why Thailand doesn't produce avocados, as many supermarkets seem to import them for farang (and possibly thai) use.

    Can they be grown here???

Yes, I've bought them at the Hill Tribe Market on the way back over the mountains from Mai Sot, and delicious they are too, and very cheap! (Last July they were 10 baht a kilo!)

    :)

They are ok, from chiangmai region, i find them around june / july in Foodland or Makro

  2. P.s.: regarding deli products and wines you are able to find everything in Thailand...

Humm, everything in Thailand ? that nice, I am learning something everyday :)

Could you tell me where I can get Leeuwin estate pinot noir and some cloudy bay.

For the cheese, mature goat cheese and some king inland brie & blue will be fine

Perhaps you have a place for real sourdough bread as well….proscuito will be welcome as well ! Thank you

    not trying to be sarcastic

  3. If you French, no problem, i a pretty sure the French embassy will repatriate you for free with lodgement and support training at arrival.

I think it is the only country doing it, if you look at it deeply, with alliance francaise all over the world, i must said France are doing many individual , must come from the egalite / liberte / fratarnite.

In one way, I do not agree with this system as they blood suck dry the French with tax, happy to have left this country 30 years ago.

When i am home, the first point i made is to get all items impossible to find in Thailand, good bread / cheese / wine / prosciutto et for few days, i enjoy myself

  4. One note, someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But when I went to open a bank account here in Phuket, they wanted to see a work permit. I said I have a one year OA retirement visa, so I'm not allowed to work. After some discussion amongst themselves, they opened an account for me, saving only. For a checking account it seems you need to own a business. For a credit card you need to deposit the amount of your "credit line" in a separate account. This happened at both Siam Commercial Bank as well as Bangkok Bank. Before I turned 50, I was on a tourist visa and they said I couldn't open a bank account on that type of visa. That was about five years ago though, maybe things have changed...

Jimi, it is hit and miss with opening a bank account, some branch said No, some said yes!

  5. All over bangkok you say..

thanks bro, saves me time wandering the pavement.

    how about a street/district?

dont worry tho, i'll go to makro dot com site or sumthin.

    Peace.

    ef

I just look at my Map Magic (ThinkNet), in Layers you have Makro.

I could not give you direction, i know where two is, could send you GPS next time i go, but could not remember streets name.

    Makro have Site : http://www.siammakro.co.th/en/main.php

You have a drop window with all the locations

PS, i do not think the meat (chiken / pork) is any good in Makro, the one I go is very good for fresh fishes, they not all the same.

    Cheers

  6. Thank both of you

No wife, i am on Non immigrant visa / category O / multiple journeys / visa run due 03 May / utilised before 11 August 2010

How long the letter from the Australian Embassy valid for ?

Do you think to transfer few thousand dollars to Thai bank account before hand is better? The income letter will be over the requirement, just for good will.

  7. The cost is 1,900 baht if you arrive on a non immigrant visa entry - an extra 2,000 baht if you have to convert to a non immigrant entry inside Thailand.

You want an extension of stay (not a visa) for retirement. You fill out a TM.7 form and attach 4x6cm photo, provide proof of 800k in bank two months/letter from bank of account balance or letter from your Embassy of income of 65k per month (Embassy normally issues with change for notary service). You should have copies of passport data/entry/visa pages and departure card as well as bank passbook if using deposit method. They may ask for some proof of where you stay (lease/receipts/mail/bills or such) and a map to location (hand drawn as you supply a store is OK). You visit before a 90 day entry expires but during last 30 days or if have to convert to non immigrant it may require a trip to Bangkok with 21 days remaining or more on permitted to stay.

It is really very, very easy.

Thank Lopburi, Today I just learn one extra thing, hard copy of your home map could be usefull to bring along.

Could you tell me if I will save any time / trips going through a solicitor, agree on fees (1900 baht) and send him all papers, and still i will be able to kick something to Pid’s charity of choice....

I would like to go through the income way (embassy letter), I am planning two trips then, one to the embassy & one to the emigration by myself, NO ?

I have all other papers in order, and my monthly’s income is over the asking 65000 baht / monthly.

Will it saving times to pay for a solicitor?

Am 52 on NON O visa multi entries

  8. There are some horrible people in every town in the world.

I think someone got it right above. The OP should go back to the west for a couple of weeks. It will surely cure what ails him.

The OP is now in a lovely place with charming people around, will not tell you where but it is but not to fare from Huahin, regarding the west, i do travel there sometime.

I let you deal with touristic towns who take tourists as shit i you like them! But not for me, read the post above / above, some get it right as well.

Happy, you happy where you are, and do not tell me where I should go!

Stay away from the place like Phuket / Huahin / Pattaya, live this to ignorant and unwell travellers, find yourself nice places, it do exist in Thailand !

  9. For the record

An Aircard is a device that plugs in to your computer and provides direct

    connection to the GPRS/EDGE network.

It plugs in to a PCMCIA slot, not an USB slot.

    my notebook spec said:

It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot)

that mean no possible to an aircard ?

how good in the blackberry and connection ?

  10. Zen, not hijacking you post, i am interested to know more as well, i will be on the road for few months, escaping Bangkok and the R.E.D, lol, no just want to give my great old dog a nice life.

Plan to go to Khow Yai and chantanaburi not sure if the hotels i want will have it.

Is anyone on line using a USB Thumb or a phone as connection & happy with the speed here? What company are you using? Have you been travelling with it & how is the coverage? Do you have a monthly account with them as i have at home (Bangkok) true or are you buying time as you go?

Can you do your online Bangkok and international sites without problems..

  11. Would like to know as well, one of my friends just bought a 3g blackberry, is this way to go?

He told me is what happy with it, looking at email or other, but ever try with notebook yet.

Presume will be difficult for passing tourists as they do not have a fix account with one on the providers!

    PLEASE inlight us!

  12. Lenovo in his mid sale catalogue still have some notebook with 2 gig ram & vista loaded, but some good price as well for new models.

The catalogue can be download from the Lenovo thai site.

I still see old models in Thailand, my friend been offer a notebook with vista recently, with 1 gig ram, off course with free upgrade windows 7

4 months ago, i look to get a notebook, in the end i decide to buy in Singapore; I did want to take a break anyway!

In Singapore, Only Lenovo / Toshiba / Hp have factory load windows 7 at this time, i bought the HP Pavilion dm3-1015TX / Intel core duo (2.26GHz) / 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM / 500 GB SATA HDD / NVIDIA GeForce G105, but like Lenovo, Toshiba, Asus as well

I did write a post at this time, I paid $1520 Singapore dollars, given a sleeve free, and got 80 dollars back from GST, it go around 1150Au dollars clear, that is 34170 baht, and i cannot see this spec yet in Thailand.

Look around, get windows 7 factory loaded, and some good specs, i am sure some deals are around, stay clear of the old stock.

  13. i do not know if you have a HomePro, i bought one in homePro bangkok few years ago, and they did send someone to install it, perhaps better option around, but no cost to look at the system they have.

    Why

    Fredob43

    Your post is important.

I just post a disappointment few days I have with huahin and over 1100 views it.

Internet are a killer tool, younger generation will avidly log on the net, & read before they conceive a voyage somewhere.

Good on them, knowledge is useful.

my Bangkok friends & myself we stop going to Phuket years ago, and the last I hear about someone going there, was a honey-moon couple from Australia and one French couple from France to the club med! When this type of customers will stop to go, not a lot will be left in this mafia over price town.

and it is true, your topic could have a more direct title

  14. If you're referring to the Queen of France during the French Revolution (Marie Antoinette i think), then this is quite different, she said "let them eat cake" cake-referring to corn bread, her advisor told her that the people dont have bread to eat and she asked why they couldn't make and eat corn-bread instead (at least that's the only sensible reason i have heard of, of why she said that)-->thaksin how ever is just a rich b****ard

Brioche < fluffy / light brioche > not corn bread !

Qu'ils mangent de la brioche ... but that is Speculative

  15. they are going to use animal blood from the slaughter houses, get real people. Mission impossible. Nobody would take their blood and have it handed over for spilling it around, in this in a short term, is unthinkable, unaesthetic and it would be a crime against fellow citizens who are in need for blood donation.

i was ready to post the same

few pigs died for the good ??? cause !

  16. What I do not like about Australia, principally about Victoria, it is a nanny state, bit to right wing for me (not government but mentality of people).

Monday to Friday you could find absolutely no people in the street, hard to find just somewhere to have a quick something to eat! & Friday / Saturday just nearly impossible to walk into a restaurant as they fully booked.

Quality & diversification of food in small to middle towns’ very standard, progress has been made in Melbourne for terroir and farm products, but i find during holidaying with my family difficult to get fresh items & seafood, most get send directly to warehouse and frozen products are sent back.

You cannot get unpasteurised cheese there with the normal channel

A friend of mine was study in Tasmania Hobart for his master, during one of the festival they close the Pier, the direct route between his logging to the Uni, and they want to charge him $10 dollars to pass through. He did have student card but nothing did matter. if he refuse I did have to walk 2 kilometre extra !

It is mainly a safe country, good to have a family.

Many good things about Australia, depends what you looking for.
