  1. Probably because TV has an estimated 99 percent male membership and therefore dominate any forum you care to mention..... except the ladies´......and even there, the odd ( ..:D...) male or two has been known to offer :o his opinion, even when the ladies didn´t want it....

  2. The wife and I bought a similar thing for a brother-in- law 3 years ago in Nongbualamphu. Cost 53.000 Baht. Can´t remember what it´s called .... I think saamlor kreung..... Not a tuk tuk...... but it has a 125cc motor and at the rear there is a wooden bench on each side. Can carry about 4-5 people on each side. Great for the countryside.

  3. I remember many years ago, as a kid, when playing football, that 2 of the lads would always cry out "pelanty" (instead of penalty)......... I´m sure that there are still lots of Brits, who still make this mistake....it makes me cringe..... :o

  4. Boring... Why are english so careful about their language and the mistakes? Actually not everybody can fluently speak english.

And sorry for my poor english!

No-one is critisising your average non-native speaker of english for making mistakes...................... but if it´s on a business or professional level, you have to get it right!!!!!

  5. At a hotel on sukhumvit soi 4 in bkk

"Guests are told to look all valuables - they reminded the hotel will be irresponsible" !!!

You find these howlers, of course, worldwide. Here´s an example from the window of a baker´s shop in Berlin. They also sell "snack´s" there............. but the misuse of apostrophes, as we know, is a very common phenomenon......even on TV !!!! :o

  6. Let me approach it from a slightly different angle then...................... I maintain that European countries should be just as strict in their requirements towards long-term visitors and in particular towards would-be immigrants. Thailand basically says, Thailand belongs to the Thais and anyone who wants to enter the country may possibly do so BUT only on terms dictated by the Thais. Quite right in my opinion. Britain (where I hail from) and Germany (where I´ve lived for over 30 years) virtually take in anyone who wants to go there. Yes, there are regulations and restrictions............. but look at the hundreds of thousands of immigrants entering these two countries, who are basically not wanted. I get the impression that the interviews go something like this........"Hello Mr and Mrs Asylum Seekers....... you say you are unskilled, penniless and have 7 children. Well, you are just the type of family we are looking for. A total burden on the system for generation to come but you can be sure, we´ll provide you with housing, health care, give special tuition to your children and yourselves (knowing that most of you won´t make any effort at all to integrate) and shove money up your backsides for the next few generations. AND, if you persevere long enough, you can bring in your cousin three times removed together with his wife and 13 children. We are just dying to take care of everyone till the end of their natural days". Raise the taxes a bit more, take a bit more from the unemployed and the pensioners .... and hey presto, it all works out again. I´m not at all racist.............. I just see how weak the Europeans are when it comes to defending their own countries agains rampant immigration................... Germany will end up with a muslim majority in not too many generations... and Britain???? Have a look at the likes of Bradford and Birmingham, to mention but 2 cities. I need say no more!!!! The Thais, with their strict controls, have got it right.................................... In 100 years the make-up of the population of Thailand will be exactly the same as it is today. Anyone dare to make predictions for European countries?????? :o

  7. yanks and their usage of the word 'spunk'

constantly amusing to the most Brits that one...

'wow, you sure got a lot of spunk'

why thanks, i always aim to please :o

:D:D:D I bet you´ve confused our American counterparts with that one........ :D

  8. The vast majority of TV members, who apply for a visa of whatever description, are critical of the restrictive manner in which Thailand issues them. They would like longer-term visas and residence permits with fewer controls and a simplification of the rules to be observed, when applying for such. Although I will in the near future be in a similar situation, I would nevertheless argue the case, that Thailand is quite correct to make them quite difficult to obtain - certainly in the case of residence permits - as it keeps out the "riff-raff" that most European countries take in!!!! Just look at the state of countries such as Britain and Germany - they let in refugees and other foreigners with little control if any (despite the "immigration controls" that may exist) and allow their countries to be overrun by poorly or non-skilled people, who place an intolerable burden on their welfare systems. Many nationals of those countries are up in arms, so to speak, at the situation which has now developed. Don´t believe me???? Ask many of the Brits here...... and the man on the street in Germany. They (and I) would send the whole lot back home!! Thailand doesn´t have such a problem, as it very strict on who it lets in. Totally correct in my opinion... any objections to my claim?????

  9. A few years ago the poms decided to change "make a decision" to "take a decision".

Really? Take it where? I can take a sack of groceries from the store to my home. I can take a girl out of a bar - where can I "take a decision"

The pot should stop calling the kettle black.

How about the overly trite "actually"? Believe this started in OZ & quickly moved to England where is caught fire. Now it's ok to use it 2 or 3 times per sentence.

    Pom here - and I have NEVER heard anyone say "take a decision" . . . . .

Second Pom here...........I´ve never heard "take a decision" either....................... :o

  10. Why are there always some forms of genius going to topics and post things like "This is bs and should be closed". I see many strange topics but they can be important to the persons who start/ask/post.

To answer your title: because we need them here.

Without them we would never learn something.

    :o

Without them, we would never learn anything. Now you´ve learned something else.................sorry, I just couldn´t resist... :D

  11. In my modest British opinion there are far too many silly american expressions used here... such as "chilling out".... what a ridiculous expression!! But worst of all, in my modest opinion, is the (incorrect) usage of the expression "enjoy". If I´m not mistaken, the verb "to enjoy" requires an object...i.e. you enjoy something. It is incorrect to wish that someone "enjoy". Any other opinions on this totally insignificant topic????? :o

Chilling out in Thailand! Yeah right!

Hey man I'm a Brit too but like crazy man, the US of A has kinda spiced up our lingo which is cool but I guess it's richer for the infinite number of varieties that add to its constant metamorphosis.

It's a living organism and immensely rich for that.

    Enjoy!

(Reflexive verb, imperative mood. Can take an object but not necessarily. Cf 'go', 'run', 'stop', 'finish', 'vomit'.)

    ´Ey upp...... by your accent, I would guess you´re a Yorkshireman!!!..... :D

I disagree with your last claim, however.......... as far as I understand, the verb "enjoy" requires an object.....you cannot (grammatically speaking) pick or choose, whether to add one or not... unless you want to instigate a thread like this... :D But have a nice........ (inferred), anyhow!

  12. as an alien from another planet and not familiar with some of the terrestric behaviour i dare to ask the question "how does one support a football club?"

donations? prayers? beating up the wife, kicking the dog, beheading the neighbour who supports another club or demolishing cars and shop windows if/when the club loses a match? :o

The better known supporters of football clubs express the pride they harbour within themselves by travelling with the team, whom they idolize as gods, to other parts of the globe and then proceeding to smash in the heads of non-supporters in an expression of joyful support. Isn´t that the way followers of certain religions express belief in and support of their god????? Can one therefore compare football with religion??? :D

  13. Sounds like a "Gyro" sandwich..is it?

Döner kebab (Turkish) = Gyros (Greek) = Shawarma (Israel; EDIT and apparently the Arab world)

Here's a link on how kebabs have developed - the stuff we Europeans know from back home apparently originated in a suburb to Berlin, as an adaption of the originally Turkish dish.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%B6ner_ke...round_the_world

That´s right... the Döner Kebap was invented in Berlin by an enterprising young Turk, who thought up the idea as an alternative to the German Bratwurst. In Berlin a good Döner Kebap costs on average Euro 2,50, which at the current exchange rate would be about 1.80 or so British pounds (correct me if I´m wrong.....). If I remember correctly, a Kebap in a UK Kebap shop costs a multiple of this.................. yes, Britain has become an expensive countrs. What does a Kebap cost in

    Thailand????

  14. I grew a beard at the age of 19 and wore it 36 years, before shaving it off (the moustache I still have) only 3 months ago. My wife liked my beard and didn´t actually want me to shave it off - and everyone I´ve met in Thailand always readily accepted it (and been fascinated by it....at least the locals in Isaan...... :D ). But I must admit I prefer myself without it now (makes me look 10 years younger....... :o )

  15. I'm an American and find the term "Chill Out," if used in the proper context, to be quite appropriate and makes perfect sense. In America, or at least in California, we kind of use it when someone gets a little Hot Headed; i.e., wants to fight or escalate things. Usually you say something like "Chill Out, I was only joking." Basically someone said it already, it's used when someones blood pressure really gets flowing, so cooling off, or in this case chilling out, seems very reasonable.

Anyway, I've been here in Chiang Mai for awhile now, but I have to say, there seems to be far more English expressions here than American. But that's just my impression, as I've run into far more people from England than America here in Thailand.

i'm in chiang mai and i heard someone use the expression 'ecky thump' the other day. which i quite enjoyed.

Actually, "chilling out" and derivatives thereof are my pet hates......!!! But ´that´s just me...... you Murkins can use it, if it makes you feel better...... :D But "ecky thump".... well... it just says it all...... great expression!!!! :o

  16. Almost correct.

"Enjoy" is technically intransitive but you can bend it a little as in "The things I enjoy": but "Enjoy" alone should have an object or another

    verb after it.

P.S. American English is just another dialect which Brits have long since accepted. Get over it.

Is '"enjoy" technically intransitive?? In your example, "the things I enjoy", the verb "enjoy" has an object, "the things (which)". In my opinion, grammatically incorrect expressions, such as this (i.e. "enjoy"), are brought into being by "hignoramuses", who have no idea, that there there are such things as intransitive and transitive verbs and that a transitive verb - such as "enjoy" - is always followed by an object (i.e. ...the meal/the film etc.). They coin an incorrect phrase, which is then adopted by other "hignoramuses" and in some cases they become widespread and are adopted by (dare I say ignorant....?) sections of society, despite the fact that they´re bastardizing the English language.

Now you can call me pompous, if you wish (whoever it was....)..... :D

  17. why not whine about brits using 'lads'

    it sounds homosexual.. a LOT

everytime i hear someone using that word, im really unsure of their sexuality.

"A good night out with the lads"......... good old British tradition...... nothing ambiguous about that!!!!
