  1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but how do you guys pick your shoes?

I've seen guys spend hefty amounts of time deciding if they want their "casual loafers" pointy or rounded, and then contemplate for a day over brown or black stitches. Men's shoes look alike, but it's all in the little tiny details, right? Or have I no grounds for this question?

Real men can buy shoes in under 5 minutes :o

Decision tree for men (over 30) buying shoes:

    Black or Brown?

    Do they fit?

    How much?

...... and will a wipe with a damp cloth once a year keep them clean???? :D

  2. I´m late in replying... but anyhow........ yes, I´ve seen it used mainly as in "bon appetit", but cannot accept that "enjoy" should establish itself as the equivalent. Using it (incorrectly) in this manner would be as ludicrous as wishing somebody "Have a nice...." on a Friday afternoon when, of course "....weekend" would be implied.

I thought I´d seen "enjoy" used mainly by Americans but will not rule out that perhaps it was used by Brits.

And finally........ how did whoever it was get the idea from, that I´m "pompous"?????? I only expressed a simple opinion in a fairly courteous manner...... :o

  3. I´m lapping up these suggestions as to how to cope with barking and aggressive dogs - we are planning on moving to Thailand in the not too distant future and barking dogs are certainly something which put me off the idea each time I think about it, having spent many an unpleasant, sleepless night in the MooBaan because of howling packs of demented dogs. Have I not read somewhere here that there is actually a dog control authority that can be called to deal with free-roaming, aggressive soi dogs? Admittedly they would probably only be active in larger cities but I would gladly offer to deal with them on a voluntary basis.... i.e. round them up and "dispose" of them.... if given the opportunity!

  4. There´s a real girls´blouse discussion going on in the ladies´ section about what shoes they have on their tiny feet today.

What do all the butchy men wear, when they´re in Thailand (oh all right.... the non-butchy men can also reply.... :o )??

I have problem feet......... even during the so-called "summer" in Europe I can´t wear ordinary shoes (and yes, even with more expensive leather shoes I have the same problem), as my feet sweat so badly that I get heat rashes. When in Thailand I NEVER wear shoes...only sandals. How about everyone else??

  5. In my modest British opinion there are far too many silly american expressions used here... such as "chilling out".... what a ridiculous expression!! But worst of all, in my modest opinion, is the (incorrect) usage of the expression "enjoy". If I´m not mistaken, the verb "to enjoy" requires an object...i.e. you enjoy something. It is incorrect to wish that someone "enjoy". Any other opinions on this totally insignificant topic????? :o

  6. The wife and I will be moving to Thailand in the not too distant future and I´m gathering ideas on how to keep myself constructively busy once we get there!!!! Im quite a sporty type but as a pastime I also quite like the occasional game of chess. Do the locals - as well as TV members - play much chess?????

  7. Hold on.... you want to send 1 million THB for ' Sin Sod ' and then transfer the money back???

Quick question, is it your bank account in Thailand you are sending the money?????... if not i would not even send the money!!!!!!!... i have been here for 4 years, and have seen this Con about 10-14 times with different amounts of money

Sorry to seem negative, but as above have seen this to many times, as 'Sin Sod ' is generally never returned and also only about 200 K max..........

Thats ok, i am one of the biggest sceptics out there!!! We are actually already married but we want to have the ceremony in Thailand in January, yes i have my own bank account in Thailand.

I will get the whole 1million back as i have agreed to give her family 300k which is seperate to the 1m.

I`m just not keen on paying say 59 baht in the pound to get the money out there and then getting stuffed to get the money back.

Ok sounds good to me..... just did not want to see another ferang getting roobed of his money.... :o

I must be pretty thick........ still don´t understand why you want to send across a million, give the family 300K and then send the rest back again. Is it to impress????? (not meant negatively!)

  8. I saw a programme a couple of days ago, which compared breakfasts in various countries, looking for the greasiest with the most calories................... the Yanks came first with around 1800 calories and the British breakfast came second with around 1400 calories. They served the whole whack in both cases... and obviously you can eat less..... but the English breakfast is still a greasy affair... (and I´m a Brit myself).......!!!!

  9. There was a thread just a week or so ago from someone wanting us all to wave fairy wands to ward off voodoo or whatever..... it appears to have worked (I certainly waved my wand....) as the OP hasn´t related any more horrific tales. Perhaps we can all get together here and wave our wands....... or get your resident fairy to do it for you. Hey... I´m deadly serious..... 1....2.....3.... all together now.......WAAAAAAve....... :o

  10. We transferred Euros to the UK a few times in the last 2 years because of the higher interest rate in the UK (as well as profiting interest-wise from the non-resident status we have), "assuming".. ( :o ...) that the pound would remain strong. We gained perhaps 2 percent or so in interest.... but lost about 20 percent due to the depreciation of the pound!! My advice (take it at your own risk........ :D ) would be to transfer it now, accept what amount you get and don´t think about it any more..........

  11. Just had a look at airfares for 2009, I can't believe what I found. Let me give you 3 examples for an economy one-month return ticket BKK-Berlin-BKK in march-april:

    - Qatar: 1000€, used to cost around 600-700€ in 2007-2008, that's a 45-65% price increase

    - Air Berlin: 900€, used to cost 600€, that's a 50% price increase

    - Thai Airways: 1700€, used to cost 700-800€, that's a freckin' 110-145% price increase!!!!! Even British Airways and Air France are cheaper now! I guess I can throw away my Royal Orchid card...

    OH MY GOD!

Gave may-june a try and it is not cheaper! I'm afraid business is going to be quiet for Thai tourism next year...

I was searching 2 days ago myself for flights in Jan/Feb for my wife and myself from Berlin to BKK and back and was also horrified. However, I found prices of around 800 Euros or just below as of the middle of March. You can fly even cheaper if you use Aeroflot......however we used them a year ago and it was absolutely atrocious!!! I would never fly with them again and would rather pay double the price!!!! I´ll have a look later and let you know what airline it was.

  12. When I´m in Isaan with the wife, I drink the rain water, which the family collects in those huge pots they all have in their gardens. It doesn´t taste bad, I´ve never had any stomach problems from it............. and it costs nowt!!!!!! Anyone know a cheaper method????

  13. :o
I bet there are more downsides in germany than thailand

If you mean the winters, yes.

Finding work and and having no visa complications are a plus though.

I had to laugh at that one....... as a Brit, who´s lived in Berlin for the past 32 years, let me point out that it´s nigh on impossible to find another job, if you lose the one you have........ at least one that pays more than about 4,50 Euro per hour!!!! You´ve had it till pension time if you become unemployed. I, together with my Thai wife, have a reasonable job managing property. However, I would have to continue working till the age of 65 and a few months if we wanted to stay in Germany. There´s no way I´m going to do that..... a perfectly viable alternative, however, is to move to Thailand in 3 years time and live on savings as well as payouts from insurance policies which will then begin to mature. Even with these, we would be hard pushed to be able to live in Berlin without working...hence our reason for moving to Thailand...plus I hate the lousy winters here!!!!!!

What a load of Twonk, you have obviously got no trade, no problems getting work in Germany, I was there on holiday last year ,in the space of 7 weeks I was offered 3 different well paid jobs in my trade , if I wanted to come out of retirement, after 32 years you should get a fantastic german state pension , I only worked in germany for 19 years but I kept up the minimum payments to my german and uk pensions I retired at 59 , 6years ago and even thoughI live in australia and have to pay 49% tax on my overseas pensions I could even comfortably live on Ku,Damm if I wanted too :D

A load of Twonk??? :D I like the expression..... :D everyone has their own tale to tell...... you are one of the lucky pensioners, who benefited from a good pension, before the state started cutting back on everything....... I have always been self-employed. Anyhow, I maintain that the average person in Germany (and in other european countries nowadays) will have a very hard time getting a new, well-paid job, after he has turned 45........... I see it all around me (I used to be a spy, by the way... became redundant when the Wall came down!!!!)

  15. While we´re on the subject of poor spelling and incorrect grammar, can´t we make it a rule on Thaivisa that at least native speakers know how to use apostrophes, can differentiate between "your" and "you´re", know how to use "its" and "it´s" and have mastered the use of "there" and "their", before their posts are allowed to appear??? I know it´s an old topic and gets the back up of various people (who can´t spell...) - and I know I´ll be howled down here - but it´s really pathetic to read the same mistakes over and over again from "native speakers", who should know better!!

  16. Gor blimey......... are you both serious (dingdongrb and ozzydom)????? I suspect ozzydom is pulling legs as regards the number of rabbits he skinned.............. but as far as slaughtering the animals is concerned, I´ll definitely let my wife try out your methods first..... :o

  17. Is this thread never going to end?? When it reaches the stage that participants are contunuously insulting each other, then the time to end has long been surpassed...................... leave it guys and gals...... it´s all been said now........ :o
