What happens when you get a jury duty summons in the mail?
Captain Monday replied to Khyron's topic in General Topics
I don't know I avoided it since 2020 You can ask to be take off the voter registration, and not renew DL, but what about proprrty tax? -
I do not mean to quibble over terminology. But so that readers are not misled there is nothing such as "US tax residency". If an individual is a US citizen or US person (resident, corporation, green card holder etc). one must file a federal tax return, or not, every year. Most people with an income are required to file a return (eg. single under 65 age gross income not under $12,950) There is a foreign earned income exclusion now $120,000 if you are outside the USA for 330 days There is a concept of "domicile", example used for business purposes or many people to avoid State income taxes why they have their primary residence in states such as Nevada or Florida that have no state income tax. One of these persons claiming Florida domicile is very famous and has orange hair. At the same time he claims his residence is a "private club". The value of which stated in accounting records changes depending on whether he is paying property taxes or is using it as collateral to borrow money from banks! The only way to cut the cord to USA is renunciation of citizenship. Not free and subject to negotiations with the US authorities if one has significant assets.

What do you mean heat transfer? It seems like you are surmising how things might work in aircraft air conditioning and pressurization systems. But, I can't say you misunderstand it as obviously you have never done even two minutes of research on the subject Air used for heating/cooling and cabin pressurization comes from engine compressor bleed valves. There are numerous scenarios where smoke/fumes can get in the cabin, I've been there unfortunately. All airliners basically work this way except for one of the the latest, the B787 (as far as I know). On the 787 the air comes from electrically powered compressors. A more efficient system that saves fuel and structural weight. The cabin is not really "sealed" so tightly. Air is pumped in continuously the cabin pressure controlled/regulated by the outflow valve. Without bleed air or properly working "packs" cabin pressure is very quickly lost. On the 737 in a common scenario this can be caused by pilot error. Result, "Rubber Jungle" Then tea (no bikkies) with the base chief pilot! . http://www.b737.org.uk/airconditioning.htm http://www.b737.org.uk/pressurisation.htm

How does Bali compare to Pattaya or Phuket
Captain Monday replied to georgegeorgia's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I could enjoy living permanently on Bali but would not visit again as a tourist. Please mark "confused" and move on. -

I only heard it from the late 1970s American TV show "Welcome back Kotter" with Gabe Kaplan. John Travolta was not a big star then. When I was a kid there were many funny shows nothing on American TV seems worth watching these days. Kaplan used to be a standup comic. Recycled comic material going back to the Vaudeville days was often used.

2023 is a year that comes once in a 1000 years
Captain Monday replied to ezzra's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Confirmed on the iOS Calendar app. That appears to go on forever. 2023 does not come around once in 1000 years it will be 3023 The earliest the fourth Thursday in November falls is the 22nd US Thanksgiving holiday would come on the come on November 27th 3023 but I would not count on any humans existing then. -
Not after retirement which I am mulling. Right now I am in the mood to sell my condo in and buy a larger more expensive one in a better location, but that idea is on hold. Half-baked announcements from a government that has organs constantly working at cross purposes has consequences don't you think?

That very good, but my problem is fairness. Thailand will also flaunt the dta agreements imho. I am a US person and thus not a tax resident of any country. Let alone Thailand as I do not spend 180 days in any country due to constant international travel. When I did work in non-US countries where I was legally resident I had access to all the benefits and provisos of a citizen as far as I could tell (medical insurance, social programs, local discounts, public housing, etc. ) except for voting or public service jobs. I am not saying there was no racism but certainly no dual pricing or these other blatant scams, discriminations, and daily microaggressions. I would not pay income tax to live as a second class citizen

Overstaying by hours
Captain Monday replied to MindfulPresence's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
It seems like some people have got thru lucky without an overstay stamp, or it is up to the IO? Or we have not established a straight answer to what the actual regulation is under Thai immigration law (for what it's worth as Thai law appears to be whatever a man with a badge says it is). TG 648 BKK-FUK leaves at 01:00AM tomorrow. Always has departed around this time, for good reason. So, if one's permit to stay expires on Nov 26 and one passes thru BKK immigration prior to 23:59 on Nov 26 with a boarding pass for this flight is it an overstay or not? -
I think you are right. Elite Programme or LTR visa like with the $USD 500,000 investment in Thailand will be exempt. Hand to mouth pensioner driven out. Thai Wife? Pay up. Or, "take her and your dependents back to your country". This is how it will play out in my opinion. Everyone who is an expat without PR or citizenship needs a plan B. So, what's in your bug out bag?

I always thought Bogans were Australian version of American "rednecks" Seems a bit different. Do bogans wear the name as a badge of honor? Our Rednecks do as they are not necessarily homophobes, racists, or even *Christians although they are nearly all GOP voters. The primary identifying factor is the deep love of guns. Then hunting and fishing, beer, chewing tobacco more than smoking if even, large pick up trucks, and following College Football of Southern states. So what is an eshay I just heard about other than young crims who hang around railway stations? *I know Sikh and Pakistani rednecks who are more American than I will ever be.

What happens when you get a jury duty summons in the mail?
Captain Monday replied to Khyron's topic in General Topics
For at least 10 years BC (before covid) I had no US address Being stranded abroad from Thailand for months caused me to take action Now I have a US address I filled out the questionare about 6 months ago. In October received my first Jury Summons in more than 20 years I go to the US almost every month anyway but because I had company training it would have been a big hassle. Emailed the court and received an official continuance signed by a Judge because Now today I see in my email I got another summons for December. (I have the USPS service that sends me an email pic of just about every item I receive in the postbox except the advertisements). That junk that stuffs my box full early. A bane of my existence. No way to opt out The summons is just a postcard and I can clearly see all the info on it. I will attend but have to cancel a medical appointment now I think I should maybe cancel the email service as being out of the country and never seeing your mail should be a pretty good excuse to have your contempt of court charges dropped. It is 2024 almost already why don't they call or send an email? -

Did the committee authorize? As you are a renter you have no say and unless your rental contract specified some kind of year round access you’re probably s.o.l.. Buy a ticket to the shindig, go to another party, or just try to gatecrash it. Thais are so bad at running a reception desk probably no problem if you are suitably dressed.

What is your favourite British Cuisine?
Captain Monday replied to Chris Daley's topic in International Food
English Muffins. I like Thomas’ are at every supermarket in USA but Inlike the sourdough Totally authentic amirite? -
Pointing out incorrect assertions or inconsistencies in the posted contributions pf other members is not necessarily starting an argument, in the negative sense of the term. The insinuation that someone is a lowlife is an insult that is probably a violation of forum rules, and certainly common nettiquette.

Overstaying by hours

What do you mean effectively left the country ?Is this the barstool rubbish that describes some kind of no mans land where Thai law and sovereignty is somehow suspended? What if you assault sombody in the lounge or get caught shoplifting from duty free the Thai authorities just ignore it? When one stamps through immigration one has not left the country one simply enters and area of the airport known as airside that is restricted to authorized employees, and travellers who have undergone imigration exit processing procedures. I can confirm this is the case personal experience from a cancelled Northwest airlines flight to NRT that returned to the gate prior to takeoff. I was not given a new 30 day once stamp back at the Immigration arrival hall, my exit stamp was cancelled. Because I had not 「effectively left the country」I imagined the ”stay to the last moment” brigade on that ill-fated flight would now have been forced on to an overstay, even though they had a good excuse. If they could not find another way out the same day. The flight departed the next morning, Now if the flight, conducted by a foreign air-carrier had become airborne and crossed the Thai border prior to an air return to BKK? That would be an interesting question for an international air law exam. -
How to Bring Your Own whiskey bottle to Thai music pubs?
Captain Monday replied to henrik2000's topic in Pattaya
Coming solo with your bottle from a liquor store? Sure you will get a better table if you arrive with 3-4 Thai "pretties"
